  • Find out how the Azipod® propulsion units are assembled, and follow their journey from factory to installation.
    WHAT IS AZIPOD® PROPULSION?
    Azipod® propulsion is a gearless steerable propulsion system where the electric drive motor is housed within a pod outside the ship hull. Azipod® units can rotate 360 degrees, increasing maneuverability and operating efficiency of vessel, while cutting fuel consumption by up to 20 percent compared to conventional shaftline systems. From its creation three decades ago to its market leading position in global shipping today, Azipod® propulsion has revolutionized marine transport with its unparalleled performance, efficiency, sustainability and reliability.

    Marvellous piece of engineering. Considering that this is a multi pole motor , the rotor magnetic field does not need to go through diametrically and so the rotor is hollowed out to save on weight. I have never seen this type of rotor construction but its logic is indeed very good. Seeing the large number of winding on the stator I think I should hesitate to think about the control system as these days with power electronics those coils could switched on and off with any combination to produce different rotation and directions. Would not mind spending a few days of my old life becoming acquainted with these modern propulsion system and their electronic control. So many ingenious people around these days, they are the new gods of our society and just like the old gods, they too are also so invisible to society who enjoys their comforts due to the products of these unseen and silent gods working in the background of society. Congratulations to all those who make comforts to be enjoyed in our life and not after we die.

      it is common to use synchronous motors with a lot of poles
      the biggest reason for a high pole number is the speed
      if you want to have a slow motor, but the voltage hast a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz, then you need a lot of poles

    • @taras900956
      @taras900956 5 лет назад

      MrZauberwuerfel, you'r wrong, rotation speed is a frequency, divided by pole pairs number. A lot of poles means a less speed.
      Carmel Pule' is right, this solution allows to save a weight of rotor and stator too, at the expense of increase operating frequency.

    • @ke6gwf
      @ke6gwf 5 лет назад

      @@taras900956 you read his comment wrong, he says that if you want a slower motor, you have to add more poles.
      This is a slow speed application, and so they need more poles to match the speed to the frequency.

      @@Chris-vx5kp -- I have no specific comment. But there are folks out in "youtube land" that take apart electrical vehicles. The permanent magnet rotor is quite common. It doesn't use BIG permanent magnets but rather takes modest size magnets into slots in the rotor laminations. Obviously, care has to be taken when assembling such a beast.

    So in the case of Carnival Vista, can these units be repaired in dry dock or do they just replace them.

    • @FireAlarmHowTooGuy
      @FireAlarmHowTooGuy 5 лет назад +2

      They are designed to have replaceable parts. I'm currently taking Marine/Maritime Classes and I know a lot about the Azipods. The bearings are bad on the Azipods which is not allowing the vessel to make full speed. The repairs to the vessel to Carnival Vista will cost Carnival around $20M-$30M USD to get her back in service in time on July 27th so she can resume her 7-day Eastern & Western Caribbean sailings from Galveston TX as planned without any further issues to the Azipods or her 8 Diesel Generators. These are a magnificent piece of Maritime equipment but they have issues with destroying the bearings within a few years. If you compare Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class to Carnival's Vista-class it's actually very rare and it was very surprising the bearings went bad in both Azipods at the same time on Carnival Vista. The Oasis Ships have a very bad habit of destroying the bearings in the Azipods. Allure Of The Seas went into Dry Dock last year to have the bearings replaced in the Starboard Azipod and exactly just about one year later Allure Of The Seas is down one Azipod. Royal Caribbean is not taking any more chances bringing an Oasis Ship to Freeport right now so they are waiting until Allure Of The Seas commences her Transatlantic Crossing to Europe next year to repair the bearings in all 3 Azipods when she goes in for her scheduled Dry Dock.
      Hopefully, I have answered your question to the best of my ability. Can't wait to welcome you on board our ships in the future.
