the overflow doesn't "stay open", you at least need to run a pipe off it to somewhere out of the engine bay so if it does start pouring fuel its not going to go directly onto the exhaust manifold and start a fire
I've just installed a HIF44 + K&N filter into my mk1.. wondering what you used to cover the center firewall hole behind the binnacle? The induction noise is just a bit too loud for me.
Cant Wait for the next video haha, I have a brand new hs4 on my 998 and i have trouble tuning it, I was lifting the piston way too high to tune it, I have now learnt better, but im still not 100%

I wish to add a charcoal canister to my 1967 Cooper S to reduce the smell of gasoline while parked in my garage. The canister requires a source of vacuum. Do you think there is a port on this carb that could accommodate it? Thanks. Great informative videos!
I did initially. I had to use a smaller spacer, get an adjustable engine steady to kind of push the motor forward a bit and then I think I did some knocking on the firewall to make it fit.
I think that carb is an HS4 already, on that year. (Might be wrong about that) The HS4 and the HIF38 are really similar and probably wouldn't get much performance gain out of it. I would probably look at the HIF44 if you are looking to upgrade the carb. I don't think you will see a HUGE increase in performance though.
The accelerator / throttle lever has a return spring between the carb and lever, it has a lot of tension so much tension in fact that it requires quite a lot of pushing of the accelerator pedal on my 1994 mini.. The extra spring at 13:07 I don`t mean that one as I have fitted one to mine that`s a bit lighter. At 6:10 when you open the accelerator lever in your video one notices the tension and to be honest is there a spring one can purchase that is much lighter as the tension is way to much for that lever and it shouldn`t be..
Hello! I got my brothers 87 mini into my garage and i am just about to explore all its miracles. What is with the connection of the fuel breather? Is there a certain way to connect it? On my project, there is a hose on the breather, that leads all down to the bottom. But when i close the breather, the engine stalls. So i assume it needs to be open. Am i right? The dude who took "care" about the car before was a little bit out of his mind and did some really weird stuff.
I just got tired of keeping the duals tuned and synchronized. At the time I also wanted to try something new. Dealing with one is generally easier though.

Hey, i'm thinking of replacing my standard air box with a k&n pancake or cone filter, mainly because i want a loud screamy engine noise, will it make alot of difference? and which one would you recommend? thanks
I like the honesty around noise hahaha. You will definitely see a difference it's nothing like putting a big open intake on a turbo car but you will certainly hear more air. I have had both the pancake and the k&n cone types and I vastly prefer the cone filter and it is, in my opinion, louder than the pancake one. Not to mention they can be removed, cleaned, and reused.
@@classicminidiy I've read somewhere that you need to replace your needle if you put a k&n air filter on your carb. Is that true? I would only adjust the fuel mixture again...
Hello, could you help me with a question? I have an austin mini, with a 1380 engine, it is coco or kit to reach this displacement, so I bought it, it has 1 only 1 1/4 Su carburettor, the question is will it improve performance if I put a SU 1 3/4 carburettor .?
I think it will. A bigger carb does not mean more power but every carb size has a range of power output of the engine in which it works well. That means that your carb can cause the engine to get less mixture than it can take so it causes less power. images.app.goo.gl/YwziMYmsGFZrxm3N6 This graphic shows it.
I would recommend updating the pump at the same time. Minispares sells a suitable HIF44 electric fuel pump which works great. Made by a company called Facet
That spacer is required for the HIF44 due to the throttle lever and the clearance required. Without the spacer the lever intersects with the manifold and does not actuate properly.
Classic Mini DIY Alex Pi Very kind of you. And let me also thank you for your videos: I’ve learned so much about my Mini watching them! Cheers from Italy!
I don't think that the statement on the overflow pipe is correct... that is not an overflow as far as i` am aware as there is vacuum on it ...its needed for the piston inside /atmospheric air
Hi Cole, Where did you get that orange blocker? I live in California. No issues freezing my carb unit here. Thanks! BTW I just upgraded my suspension and shock by myself with the help of your vids and supports from my local mini shop- Heritage Garage
I'm so glad the videos helped with the shock install. :-) The blockers were included in the kit from 7ent. If you are in Cali you should give them a call. They might post you some for a few bucks if you ask nicely.
Hey! I would guess you probably have a single HS2 on there now. My recommendation would be an upgrade to a single HS4. Nice big carb with good flow. You could also go to a dual HS2 setup but honestly a single HS4 will be easier to work on. Link below: www.7ent.com/products/hs4-carb-single-850-to-1275cc-sie0025.html?af=cmdiy1959

I will probably hold onto them. They were solid carbs and working when I took them off. I might do a video on how to clean your carbs really well with them. Then I will have a set of working clean carbs! :-)

The new video will be going live this afternoon. :-) Lifting the piston? You shouldn't need to do anything with the pistons when tuning the carb.
Hola. Me podes decir cual es la diferencia entre SU 44 y HIF 44. Otra pregunta es si son nuevos y quien los vende. Gracias.
you need a "GUNSON Colortune" for a precise cab tune.
I have another video on the use of that tool. It’s awesome for setting the idle mixture but won’t tune across the whole power band unfortunately.

do you have an issue with the carb hitting the firewall? I need a fix for my one. I've even removed the spacer.
I did initially. I had to use a smaller spacer, get an adjustable engine steady to kind of push the motor forward a bit and then I think I did some knocking on the firewall to make it fit.
I have a 1992 Mini Cooper (Rover) it has the original carb and I would like to make a change in favour of performance. Any recommendations ?

Can I ask why you went from a twin carb setup to a single? I have a hs4 carb on my mini 1000 atm but have got a twin set of hs2’s to put on.

The little rubber hole covers? They came with the carb when I bought it.

@@classicminidiy hey, thanks for your quick answer!!! And what do you think about the AZX 1817 mechanical pump?
I see you have red rubber caps on the sides of the intake manifold, is there a reason for those? Mine are just open. Thanks!
I just liked how it looked with the plugs on it. Made it look more "finished" to me, but they arent required. :-)
Awesome, thanks! I just got my car a few weeks ago and your videos and your website have been a big help.
Where can I buy those bonnet hinges from. They are mad
I guess you’re using a black spacer between carburetor and manifold: may I ask you why?
That spacer is required for the HIF44 due to the throttle lever and the clearance required. Without the spacer the lever intersects with the manifold and does not actuate properly.

what model mini do you have?
Mine reads Morris Cooper on the back but I don't think they actually made the Morris Cooper in 60. Most likely a Morris 850 originally.
SU aka Skinners Union
I have heard this before but what does it mean? :-)
Skinners union is a brand of carburettor en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SU_Carburettor
Had no idea that’s what SU stood for. TIL
