  • After sharing a TikTok & Instagram Reel, there was a misconception that I spotted Cookie's IVDD symptoms from one walk. There were months of little signals beforehand which made us look at her a little closer than we normally would have. In this video I discuss the full story up until the point where she had surgery.

You were such a good advocate for Cookie, Leo. I feel furious that the vets refused to listen to your instinct and observation as an owner. It’s like they wait for the worst case scenario before they do anything. Thank god you pushed to get her seen. I’m so happy she is doing so well these months later.

Thank you. In hindsight I think I would have pushed harder on day one, but was going through the processes and taking professional advice. Hindsight is always 20:20 though… so all I can do now is be thankful she is walking… it’s really hard to say if that would have changed much as sometimes Crate Rest and Meds work from what I hear and I just had someone else comment sharing their story how their pup only had one episode of IVDD and it was fixed with rest. Thank you for watching the video!

That is outrageous that they didn’t refer you to an emergency vet straight away given there’s usually a 24 hour window for paralysis, I’m so glad the recovery is going well.
I did see your other pup is now going through it, something that helped in leaped and bounds was ostero joint protect like from blackmores which helped recovery for us as we didn’t need surgery in the end. Best of luck!

That’s also how I felt at first but Cookie relapsed 5months after her original surgery and we were tight on funds at this time and had to make a judgement call on going for an MRI and decided not too… then with rest she did recover…
So I do appreciate a bit more that it’s hard to make that call in early stages, but in hindsight I see that I still would have preferred MRI for Cookie in the first stage back in Jan

Thanks for sharing. I have a 6 month old dachshund. My previous dachshund who passed last summer at 14 had one episode of IVDD , but recovered with crate rest and meds. Luckily I was home when after sneezing he cried out in pain and then was limping and not wanting to walk. With the new puppy I have enrolled in pet insurance just in case. We have 24 hour emergency vets in the US but they are very expensive I hope Cookie continues to recover well

At what age did your last dachshund have IVDD? How long were they crate rested for? Surgery is very expensive and we have heard some people here in the UK have paid closer to £15k…

@@MiniatureDachshundsSausageVLOG he was 7. He had 2 weeks of crate rest but he got pneumonia and had to rest for a couple more weeks. I hear the surgery can be $4000 but everything is more expensive now due to inflation so probably about $6000-8000 now.

Hi Liz, this just happened to my 7 year old dachshund 3 days ago. In the middle of the night he sneezed 3 times and whimpered, and now his front left paw is knuckling and limp. We went to the vet and was given meds and is resting now. May I ask did you doxie who recovered after crating experience knuckling or limp limbs as well? Do you recommend an x-ray or mri? Appreciate any recommendations

Don't understand why they didn't do an x-ray. You can't see as much as an MRI but you can see the spine and the vertebra. Ans some vet know how to read it. You can see how close the vertebra are together. I know that you don't like my comments but I find that it lasted too long for the diagnostic. And that there is no information on the net. Mine was 13 when she paralyzed and I found a great deal of info on the net. By the way here in Montreal my vet and others don't give Metacam anymore; there are better AINS. With what you described a vet would have done very early an exam of the spine, since you see a lot of young Daschund with the similar problem, What you just did is great because there is no info and at least those who follow you will know what to do if they find that their dog have similar symptoms. Bravo
