      If you're a developer mac is so much faster to compile. It's not even close. It used to take me 23-25 mins to compile Hybris on a beefy gaming Windows machine, it's 3.5mins on M1 mac, 6 mins on Intel. Node frontend builds are much faster too. Worth the investment for that alone.

    As much as I love the fact that we’re finally getting vscode competitors, I have to be kinda skeptic about how artificially limited Zed is. Closed source afaik, mac only and no extension api might seem like small inconveniences when the editor is brand new but it means that it will never really have a reason for it to be preferred over vsc for more than toy projects and lightweight file editing (that neovim with a gpu renderer like neovide already does better).
    However the native collaboration, gpu rendering and installing extensions and LSPs automatically when projects are opened are all really nice features. Wish they were attached to a more production ready editor

It's having a memory footprint that vscode could only dream of. Yeah it's not a toy project.

    • @LudoTechWorld
      @LudoTechWorld 11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the speed thing struck me too... If 350ms is fast then I don't know which adjective is suitable for Neovim. Not to mention that Neovim has potentially an infinite amount of more features with its plugin system. And it's cross-platform... And it's open-source... Even VScode has those things... Well, Zed is interesting in some ways, but it seems very far to be a viable alternative to anything at the moment.

    • @AhmadMughal1
      @AhmadMughal1 11 месяцев назад

      @@LudoTechWorld Yes the only way VScode comes even close to neovim is due to the sheer amount of plugins it provides which will never be the case for Zed and in terms of speed it will also never be able to compete with Neovim so it is very far right now from finding a middle ground between these 2 metrics.
      Not to discredit that Neovim has a lot of plugins too now and they don't also effect the speed of the IDE due to lazy loading and well written lua scripts rather than using Node and Javascript. I did write my own plugin for neovim and honestly it was quite straightforward and works perfectly for me.

      I did switch to Zed about 7 weeks ago :)
      I had a journey of Visual Studio -> JetBrains -> VS Code until this year. And then I started experimenting trying Neovim and Helix and some other options. Modal editors are cool and fun, but my wrists hurt terribly after just 3-4 days using neovim full time. Ergonomic keyboards didn't solve this problem for me, so I've resumed my search for a new editor.
      I did not want to go back to VS Code, just for the reason that I've already been there. So I came across Zed, tried it and loved it.
      My primary issues about Zed are:
      - No integration with test frameworks at the moment.
      - No debugger at the moment.
      - Automatic indentation is not convenient. It stubbornly adds offsets where they don't belong.
      But all of those are not show-stoppers for me. I rarely used debugger in VS Code (once in 2 months perhaps), so if I occasionally have to debug from console, it does not bother me at all.
