One of my favorite moments in Family Guy is when Chris comes down the stairs on Halloween dressed as Bill Cosby in black face and a sweater, then Lois tells him it's racist and he needs to go change into his Indian chief costume.
When I first heard that people thought "Quagmire's Dad" was an episode promoting transphobia I was confused. I thought it was obvious from the get go that most of the characters are arseholes and that they are showcasing attitudes of people towards transgender people and not expecting us to support them.
i feel like a lot of the criticism came from people who didn't watch the show and took what they saw as face value, as if Brian vomiting for 20 seconds was how Seth personally felt about trans people.
i was skeptical the whole video until the montage where i attempted to keep a straight face and laughed the whole time. okay, you win, family guy is okay.
I didn't forget it, South Park's visuals are gross by default, and not in any kind of interesting "deliberately ugly" way either. More in the "two guys smearing shit on the walls and expecting you to think it's charming" way.
Dammit, Lily! I didn't have nearly enough time to swallow my drink and now I just choked on a glass of coke to avoid painting my laptop with it. xD #RIPPetersLeftTesticle #NeverForget
I'm getting really sick of the specific praise that South Park gets stuff like: "It so topical! It provides commentary on things before anybody else does!" So that means it's the cartoon equivalent of those "first!" youtube comments? "It recently started telling long term stories! It has a whole plot in an entire season!" So the most noteworthy thing it's done in the last two years was catch up to Avatar: The Last Airbender in terms of story structure? "It makes fun of everybody so it covers equal ground and you shouldn't get offended by it!" That's like excusing the behavior of a guy who kicks puppies off bridges because he kicks other animals (which may or not be jerks) off bridges.
Thanks Lily, You sparked a reminder in my head of some idly theories I was having about Family Guy myself. I sort of gave up on the show, got bored. Then later saw Mr. Enter's stuff and sort of figured it had gone down hill. Mind, some episodes really do wallow a bit deep in the shallow humor and shock value, but the theory that the correct way to watch family guy is remembering that almost no one on family guy is a good person, and that's sort of the appeal. I enjoyed both your allusion to Seth being a class clown and the suggestion that all of Family Guy's characters are like Archie Bunker, not to be emulated, but to serve as a lesson. Thank you for the reminder to think critically, I appreciate it. Based on your brief points on Ida, I think I might actually enjoy those episodes as a Tans person myself. I certainly enjoyed Orchard Blossom.
Another interesting thing to note about the episode is that as out of touch and inappropriate as the Griffins are about the situation, they approach it with curiosity and at least some degree of respect. There’s that segment where they just cannot put together that sexual identity and gender identity are not the same thing and Quagmire has to do his best to explain the difference which takes up at least 2 minutes of the episode itself. Meg and Lois are very polite to Ida, engaging her in conventionally female conversations and it’s Peter, the idiot who has to go and ask some of the more yikes questions. And the questions themselves, while inappropriate are something a blue collar New Englander with no frame of reference for the trans community would be naturally curious about, and at least Peter’s questions are asked in a way that doesn’t belittle Ida or her feelings about her gender. There’s even that great line, “We went down the list. Nothing with wieners, nuts, or grapes, out of respect”. While awkward as hell, it does show that his heart is in the right place and there’s at least some consideration for Ida’s feelings. There’s also Quagmire’s reaction that, while objectively shitty, he ends up coming around to it within less than 24 hours after the initial shock of the transition wears off and he’s able to recognize his empathy for Ida.
Family Guy has always been a hit or miss for me (I tend to like the older episodes or some of the ones where it's Stewie and Brian in a weird situation over newer ones) but I usually rag on it and praised South Park the same way you mentioned. I honestly never noticed that! Family Guy still isn't my kind of show, but this was something I'll definitely think about next time I criticize it. (That probably also explains my growing disinterest in South Park for years as well)
Wow. Good criticism is the kind that makes you look at things in a different way, and this certainly did, as someone who recently came out as trans to quite a few people. Plus, after disliking, "Family Guy" for quite a while, I'm now thinking, "You know what? Maybe I'll give this a show another shot." At the very least, while I have problems with Seth McFarlane's approach when he's trying to be progressive (sometimes his crude approach wears thin on me), he's Mr. Rogers compared to Bill Maher.
Never thought of Family Guy like that. Maybe because I ended up hating Brian in newer seasons and hardly watched the show anymore. Probably worth picking it up again.
You bring alot of good points. I origanly dismmised Family Guy as just another "its funny because its offensave" things but now I might give it a watch
I've never really been interested in Family Guy to begin with, but after seeing that montage (and wiping the tears of laughter from my eyes) I'm now considering giving it a chance. Any recommendations for good episodes to start at?
to be fair to Mr Enter he is on the spectrum like myself and has a hard time seeing the humor in allot of family lots of people on the spectrum have been bullied or dehumanised do to being autistic so when we see people real or fictional being bullied or dehumanised we are SUPER EMPATHETIC and fail to see anything else it's hard for us proses cruelty as funny even if it's well written
no but it explains them as a trans person you must know how it feels to be outcasted for having a brain that works differently intended yours tells you should be a woman where his cannot process normal social interactions without great difficulty and years of training on how to interact almost normally i meen fidget devices were practically made for autistic people
I know how it feels, but I still don't sympathize with Mr Enter. Fun fact about me: I volunteered with a day treatment program for kids and teenagers with autism who were very poorly adjusted to it. I met a LOT of different kinds of kids and saw just how much people with autism differ from one another. The big thing that you learn doing that is that the same vices in neurotypical people exist in neurodivergent people. Something that many people refuse to acknowledge. I've met people like Mr Enter before. They were lazy, they made excuse after excuse as to why they shouldn't put in any effort to become more well adjusted, and they almost always got kicked out of the program for wasting people's time. Where most of the kids learned coping strategies and learned the skills they were lacking, some refused and made excuses to not co-operate with the staff. Using Autism as this kind of an excuse is extremely disrespectful to the thousands of people with autism who worked their ass off to learn the skills they struggled with and be more well adjusted. People with autism are not a fucking monolith. There are those who work hard, and there are those who make excuses to not even bother trying. And I will never have any sympathy for them.
Thank you Lily, as an autistic person it's hard enough to exist without whack jobs using their mental disadvantages to improve and making all autistic people look bad
As someone who is also on the spectrum I can agree completely with what Lily is saying. Being on the spectrum is not a "Get Out of Jail Free" card that gives you carte blanche to behave any way you want without any consequences. To me, the knowledge that someone is autistic makes me understand their negative behavior but not much else. It doesn't excuse it in any way.
Thank you for shining some light on this, Lily. I heard infamous things about this episode but I can't stomach Family Guy anymore, it's just not my kind of show. Glad to see it at least treats trans people better than the shitfest South Park has become.
I haven't watched Family Guy in years as I'd gotten bored of it, so I can't really have a rounded opinion on the show. Now my memories of Mr. Enter's videos are far more vivid than they should be, but it's rather telling his best reviews feature movies that are so baffling that you could remove his voice clips and nothing of value would be lost. Normally I don't like dragging people, but as a person who appreciates humanistic writing with delicate subject matter, he started to wear on me like sandpaper on leather.
Someone who will actually listen to that is probably too young to be watching Family Guy in the first place. If Friendship is Magic pulled that theme (it did) then it would be a problem.
I just don't like family guy because the pop culture reference humor is completely lost on me. But this has given me a new appreciation for it. And South Park really was only good for the first couple seasons. The creators seem to be exemplifying those graphs of people becoming more conservative as they get older.
If I may. That episode of South Park wasn't about transgender. If anything, it was more so about people who use plastic surgery. Kyle's Dad took the surgery to become a dolphin, solely because he liked dolphins. If you want an episode about transgender, I believe there was one with Mr. Garrison having a sex change at the beginning of the episode and becoming Ms. Garrison. Can't remember the name of the episode, though.
You kind of missed the point with attack helicopters. It's mocking genderfluid transtrenders who change their gender daily. Not actual transgender people.
Lily Peet how did my criticism warrant insult? I commented for the sake of clarity. Some communities do indeed make a separation of the two groups, and the only reason I became familiar with the issue is because of issues facing everyone like the pronoun law in California. People are fine to do what they want, but if they want to tell me how to live my life then they would be foolish to think I would have nothing to say about it.
Lily Peet I said literally nothing about jail time. I referred to a law that regulated speech, and I personally believe that regulation of speech for everyone would include myself as I would be included within everyone. The only thing I stated was that it effected me. I'm not entirely sure how you confused the expectation to abide by any person's pronouns to simply being told them. And again with the insults. I frequent both sides to try to gain a grasp on the overall opinions, and to be quite frank, the identity focused communities rely on aggression and attacking, which won't solve anything. I have no reason to continue this because there is no reaching out, only assumptions of my character and personal attacks. But do have a lovely day.
If being forced to stop misgendering people out of spite is a problem for you, then perhaps you ought to never leave your house. You might have other delusional misconceptions challenged and corrected, and people might not just let your willful ignorance go uncontested. If you're that terrified of being wrong, barricade yourself in a bunker and never come out. IF YOU SAY INCORRECT THINGS, YOU WILL BE CORRECTED. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO GO UNCHALLENGED WHEN YOU ARE WRONG. Stop this ridiculous distraction tactic of pretending that being corrected is a "free speech" issue. If you said the sky was green, you would be corrected. If you tried to teach children that the sky was green, you would be stopped. You do not have the right to impose your self-created stupidity on others. *I have no reason to continue this because there is no reaching out, only assumptions of my character and personal attacks* You came in here spewing delusional rhetoric. You were corrected. There is no "reaching out" to be done, only correction of your own incorrect ideas. The assumptions are made based off your actions. If you don't like being labeled a needlessly gatekeeping asshole, stop behaving like one.
Dammit Lily! I was in the library when you played the peter nickel bag nutshot compilation!
One of my favorite moments in Family Guy is when Chris comes down the stairs on Halloween dressed as Bill Cosby in black face and a sweater, then Lois tells him it's racist and he needs to go change into his Indian chief costume.
I gotta say personally alot of Family Guy's jokes don't hit the mark for me but that bag of nickles bit was great.
When I first heard that people thought "Quagmire's Dad" was an episode promoting transphobia I was confused. I thought it was obvious from the get go that most of the characters are arseholes and that they are showcasing attitudes of people towards transgender people and not expecting us to support them.

I just love listening to Lily talk, it's really calming.
You forgot that the dolphin 'joke' was horrifying visually. Seriously, it's very fucking terrible to look at.
I didn't forget it, South Park's visuals are gross by default, and not in any kind of interesting "deliberately ugly" way either. More in the "two guys smearing shit on the walls and expecting you to think it's charming" way.
To be fair, two guys smearing shit on the walls is more charming than South Park a lot of the time.
You got me to see Family Guy in a different light today. Good job. Now I want to go watch Family Guy now.
Dammit, Lily! I didn't have nearly enough time to swallow my drink and now I just choked on a glass of coke to avoid painting my laptop with it. xD
#RIPPetersLeftTesticle #NeverForget
Huh, you got me to think critically about family guy...well done.
I think I might give the show a fair try now

While I myself am not into Family Guy, I can see why other people are. I however hate South Park, and can't understand why people like it.
You don't have the demented cognitive dissonance I talked about in the video. I respect that.
My jaw dropped when you went ham on Enter lmao slay
Wow. Good criticism is the kind that makes you look at things in a different way, and this certainly did, as someone who recently came out as trans to quite a few people. Never thought of Family Guy like that. Maybe because I ended up hating Brian in newer seasons and hardly watched the show anymore. Probably worth picking it up again.
This might be my favorite episode of Glass of Water ever. Thank you, Ms. Lily.
Holy shit. I was watching this at 3 in the morning and I was not ready for the bag of nickels xD
You bring alot of good points. I origanly dismmised Family Guy as just another "its funny because its offensave" things but now I might give it a watch
god that last bit was funny

My drunk father used to idiolize Peter Griffin too much. I can't like this show no matter what.
Understandable

It was the exact same episode.
Lily Peet- would you be down to DM about trans topic in a respectful manner, interested in view points of the actual demographics ,
I fail to see exactly what such a discussion would achieve.
You kind of missed the point with attack helicopters. It's mocking genderfluid transtrenders who change their gender daily. Not actual transgender people.
You're still a douchebag who needs to grow up and stop obsessing over what other people do with their lives.
