    Your comments about farms, staff and overall interest in agriculture are why I believe the likes of yourself, other youtube farmers, the brands like Grassmen and Farmflix are actually very important.
    You show people (and largely a younger audience) the realities of the job. What work is out there and show that careers in farming are possible.
    I’m 33, small farm at home and work for a contractor alongside a full time job. I notice there’s a huge amount of interest from younger ones (16-25) that’ve grown up in the digital era, who have an interest in farming can follow this culture online, which my lot couldn’t. Or certainly as easily.
    Now whether they have the workrate to stomach the hours, unpredictably and graft required is a different story, but I do believe you’re playing a more important role than most will realise.

    Not waffle at all Crawford, it needs to be talked about on public platforms like this. And you provide an excellent insight into the importance of farming.
    My small village is surrounded by farmland, and I grew up with the kids of farmers, I was a groomsman for a farmer just last December! And now there are plans being banded around to remove multiple farms to build 5000 houses... Its a shame to pave over generations of farms, it needs to be kept alive!

    When i was a kid the village i grew up in had about 6 small farms, one a diary farm and a couple with pigs,the rest were mainly arable.All now gone, houses built on the sites of the farms, the last farm finished last year due to the next generation not having in interest in it. Very sad isn't it.
    Keep up great videos Crawford.

    The "farmer" job is different too. Whereas the main farmer was the land owner/tennant the main knowledge base, the support team of agronomists, maintenence teams to contactors has grown as a sector that want there. I remember as a boy being in the hay loft cutting seed potatoes into pieces. Then 2 of us sat behind tractor on a machine not dissimilar to your tulip planter. Then at potato harvest 3 on the harvester, picking stones/earth clods out before direct into bags. Some tipped out to grade for chip shops.
    All the land now built on, hospital, housing, educational development. Not farming.

    do you think farmers are to blame with the lack of staff since most fruit farms in my local area picked cheap European labour over locals and now these people are starting to return to homelands because they've milked the UK dry we have a 20 year skill set missing ?

    • @CrawfordsFarm1
      @CrawfordsFarm1  Месяц назад +1

      Not a case of cheap labour, still paying uk prices. Just the work ethic for those type jobs that the uk population (on the whole) lack…. You wont find enough uk folks to do the berries or the tattie roguing etc etc
      Lots of factors at play tho

      @@CrawfordsFarm1 Back in late 90s and early 2000, it was the case that it was cheap labour, farm work was piece rate and locals got a higher rate so in part greed has played a factor in this, but its not only framing this happened in its the same in the oil at the moment, covid come and a lot of good guys was paid off then the companys wanted these guys back on shit deals now its a lot of europeans with no clue whats going on but they fill a seat on a chopper so that will do.
