Examples _ you asked for it! You ask, what is the most romantic thing I ever read? Well, I’ve been reading romance books since I was in middle school- over 40 years; I have a book closet that I call my 10k-books-in-the-closet (pretty close), because I buy books- I prefer paper to e-books- which I discovered after reading a book by Jaid Black, but I do read both. Her Trek Mi Q'an series is hilariously great and steamy hot, hot, hot! And I prefer to support book stores, not Amazon. Trying to pin down the most romantic would take some serious thinking, so I’ll just stick to the books in my pandemic pile, 1 contemporary, 1 historical- all the books I’ve read since lockdown! Contemporary: Isn’t It Bromantic by Lissa Kay Adams- #4 in The Bromance Book Club- name of the first in the series. The premise is a group of guys, movers and shakers in Nashville ,TN form a [secret] book club that uses romance novels as manuals to help them be better partners in love. The plot- a Russian hockey player recruited by the local NHL team finds out that his estranged wife is in town. His bros didn’t know he was married! His wife, also Russian, who has been living in Chicago on a student visa, recently graduated from college with a masters in journalism. They grew up together in a small Siberian town; he married her to save her after her father disappeared- in Putin’s Russia. The book reveals the twists and turns of their shared history and how they get past the noncommunication in the relationship to reach their HEA. Most memorable line (at the end): “We may not speak Russian, but we know sex sounds when we hear them.” 😊😊😊 _ read for context! Historical: I just finished a short story, The Christmas Angle by Carla Kelly, about a guy in the Royal Navy, on half pay during the Peace of Amiens (Napoleon has been exiled to Elba, but is amassing supporters, which will lead to his escape, crowning as emperor and what we now call the Napoleonic Wars), who is one of those people who remember everything they ever read and a young lady who is the poor relation and goes to live with her pregnant sister- a vicar’s wife expecting her 5th, to help with the younger children. He is recommend by an officer from his ship, also on half pay, who is a member of the local aristocratic family as a tutor to the vicars 2 oldest during the chaos of the Christmas season. He was born on the wrong side of the blanket in Scotland, but managed to use his abilities to make a name for himself in the navy; he doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. She’s clear-eyed and open and nice. Their journey together is sweet, but not syrupy _ and I just found out, is the beginning of a series: the St. Brenden series, which I am ordering now! I started out with Mills & Boon, then Harlequin; I love many categories in the genre: current/contemporary, paranormal, fantasy, erotica, sci-fi, historical, mystery, military, etc. My least favorite time periods- Tudor England and the French Revolution; oddly enough after the revolution into the Napoleonic era, which coincides with the regency period in England (Bridgerton series anyone?) is my favorite. I have read Beverly Jenkins, although not in recent years, and I read Casey’s Red White and Royal Blue when it first came out. Lorraine Heath is an absolute fav- on my auto-buy list. I could write forever if I tried to list all of them, so I’ll not do that. I told someone who tried to ridicule me for reading romance that the HEA is the end; the story is in how they got there and that’s more real than Stephen King horror (no shade). And I told someone else who tried to ridicule me in the romance section of BN, no less, that the romance genre was writing about ‘me too’ waaay before it was a hashtag (btw- I’m not on twitter) . Happy reading, whatever you like... But wait, there's more...

The most baffling part about the Verity plot twist is that if the manuscript was a deliberate writing exercise rather than a unhinged memoir, then the apparently acclaimed writer was deliberately writing multiple cringey sex scenes as an exercise.

The biggest issue with “Verity” is the way Colleen Hoover writes out her sex scenes in the cringiest way, I found myself skipping pages every time she opened the journal because every entry was completely pointless
"yes, it is the unquenched thirstiness of women working around mediocre looking racecar men that prevent women from having jobs in the racing industry" 😹😹😹 who knew the breaking of the glass ceiling has always been just one thirst-quench away
Your predictions for Verity are 100 times better than what actually happened in the book 😂 You’re right that the “romance” was completely unnecessary. It added nothing of value to the book.
I was planning on reading Verity, but after your review, I have no interest in reading it anymore. Lol! Thanks for taking one for the team by reading these books. PS. Love your bangs! Keep them.
The thing with Verity is that after all the anticipation built up by Colleen Hoover's die hard fans ANY plot twist you can think of is 1000 times better than the twist itself haha. Also plot hole on plot hole and the unnecessary sex scenes killed me.

I have the same feelings you do for Verity! I don't understand when people say it's an amazing book lol, I truly don't see it. Also love the bangs, I think it really suits you!
I just realised it has been ages since I read a good romance book. I was devouring romance literature like a maniac during my adolescence (Fallen, Night School, Hush-hush, Delirium, Uprooted) ,but since I got into college I just couldn’t bring myself to go back to this genre again. Now, after watching the review of Gothikana I think it was for the best. I was lucky enough to bloom during the golden era of lovely romantic books 🥀🥀.
Same same ! Loved it as a teen and now that I’m an adult I can’t read romance…. Maybe bc I experienced what is love or what it could be and I’m not as much as naive as when I was younger so I feel like men in books are way too fake.. dk
I appreciate you doing this vlog, because you saved me from reading these books. I mean, not that I would spend time with them, I'm just soooo curious about the plots that I wanted to try - but yeah, you did and I owe you 🤣
I think verity is worth reading just because she nails the vibe of uncomfortable, rushed intimacy, But try to skip the sex scenes if you can they're just page porn.
These are not modern romance novels. These are fanfiction writings, young women reading actual romance novels and watching romance movies and then sexually fantasising in their heads based on what they consumed and writing their fantasies out. Things that, before internet, stayed in women’s heads. They have their place, especially for younglings exploring their sexuality but these are not romance novels. Just no.
I have a recommendation for books around the World. For Sweden I recommend, Gentlemen by Klas Östergren. It has great storytelling and has been rather influential for Swedish literature. It got great prose, it is also funny in a dark way. Furthermore, with its mix of reality and fiction it captures a lot about Sweden and Stockholm.
My vote is for no bangs. Whenever I’ve tried them I get the cowlick, gap going on that is always a pain. Life is much easier when I just grew them out. And thanks for summarising Verity, now I don’t have to read it myself!!
Emma, this is pure comedy. Your reactions are so hilarious. 🤣 Idk if you're trying not to laugh or not to puke about the "mad pirate". And the way you slowly bow after reading the line about new tarps being recent. I feel bad for all the icks and cringe u felt but yes, I'd be glad to see more of you roasting romance books and going thru hell with it. Sorry 🤭😂 On your bangs, I think you look good with it especially when your hair is tugged behind ur ears. Love u. 🫶
The bangs are good! I am frequently shocked by the typos and misspellings in books I would otherwise enjoy. In one of my favorites, I could see that there had been a change in sentence structure. I could see it because they forgot to delete the original. And the author gushed about her editor, which I found puzzling (both the gushing and the editor 😅). It was the first in the York series and it did improve with each book. I liked the story so much that I learned to live with the sloppy editing.
I’d definitely be interested in seeing you do a reading vlog for historical romances. My favorite series is the Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt. They actually have engaging plots, and I find them written better than most romances. Plus you can start anywhere in the series, depending on which one interests you the most.
Getting a summary of Verity was excellent. I keep seeing it everywhere and have been intrigued. I'm glad I didn't waste my time with it. I keep thinking of Code Name Verity when I see it, and I loved that book. Also, I am writing my first book, and your rant gave me anxiety. I'm pushing through, knowing that the first draft will have many errors. Have you thought of being an editor? I would happily pay you to read my book.
I loved your critique of Gothikana and I'm with you completely, Emma. Writing and grammar are important for me, especially in a published work to be read by the public. If I was an author I would wish to put out the best works I could, without obvious grammatical errors. Punctuation, I'm obsessed with punctuation, sometimes I'm sure writers have never heard of the comma or the paragraph! Just jump up and down and scream.
unhinged women is my favorite genre! excited to see what you thought of these, though if you're interested on something not necessarily romance, i made a video recommendig some books on unhinged women!!!
i love this video too much 😂 romance in general is NOT my genre, but especially these. i just can’t stand them. all my friends love these books, and that is ~fine~, but no one ever cringes with me so this was everything 👏🏼
I think you might like booklovers, the banter in that book is fun. And kiss quotient has a very good sexual tension. Also, please do more vids like this!! 😭❤
I love reading romances especially after reading a classic or fantasy. Always go with no expectations. I honestly saw those covers and I haven’t read those book and I knew you’d hate them lol Try some Mariana Zapata (slow burn).
I think regency/historical romance novels would be great for a next romance book vlog (think The Wallflowers series or Bridgerton). Some of them are definitely unhinged lol, but they have great banter. Though I must confess that I had to dnf Bridgerton 👀 there's lot of potential to rant
Hey Emma! I don't know if you've read the Brown Sisters trilogy by Talia Hibbert, but for me all 3 books (especially the last one) tick every romance box for me! I think you'd like them :)
As an f1 fan (Max RB one 😊🧡) I've been avoiding that f1 series just cause I know I would be anoyed with half the stuff but watching this vlog I learned I should avoid it for many more reasons 😭
"She walked on quiet footsteps" gosh these are the kind of quotes that make ME feel dumb for not understanding them (thinking perhaps they have this incredible second-meaning that i can't grab), but that actually just don't make sense...
Damn. You really shouldn't judge a book by its cover - Gothikana has such a cool cover design that I definitely would pick it up if I didn't know any better. On the other hand, some of my favorite book series have the worst covers ever made so I shouldn't be surprised 😂
Uhhh colleen hoover... I havent read verity and dont plan to so it was nice seeing you read it BUT I read november 9 and it ends with us and hated them SO much I just cant stand Colleen Hoovers idea of romance ( you will understand if you read november 9) its so toxic and weird
@@aliciaohara8794 same it gave me so much wattpad vibes. And trough some other reviews i have seen the book itself has many issues ( not a good ptsd and abuse representation etc.)
Thank you for this video, loved your commentary as always. I was wondering if you would do a similar video about romance in classics. Maybe reading Persuasion, Wuthering Heights, North and South etc.
this is def an unpopular opinion but the reason why i love verity and other unhinged books is because i never see them as romance books (because they are obviously thrillers etc) i never focused too much on jeremy and lowen's romance but instead on how insane and unhinged every character is that it's almost funny to me and hence entertaining plus the mystery always adds to why i like it sm edit: however i dounderstand where u are coming from tho especially since u listened to the audiobook version-
OMG, I was so curious to see your reaction on Verity! 😂 I also gave it 2 stars and had the same thoughts on it although it made me a bit angry because of the messy style it had! The book idea is not bad at all but it was made pretty bad from my point of view. I mean… I returned the book to the bookstore after reading it because I didn’t want to have it on my bookshelf; something that I never do. 😅
I almost bought Gothikana, but thankfully I read the preview on Amazon first and was immediately alerted to the typos and poor writing. Saved myself some money and disappointment, hearing your review really brought it home haha.
How is verity a 'romance' when the romance aspect is the husband being unfaithful to his handicapped wife? Even if someway the plot makes it 'right' it's still what the mc would be thinking is happening.. COHO has some.. interesting morals when it comes to men. Abusive.. cheaters.. uninterested in relationships.. and everybody swoons over her work???? The toxic men always get excused. Not to mention her immediately shutting down a girl who said her son. sexually abused said girl When you said what the plottwist was I literally said "oh duh" as.. that was really implied.
would love to see you read some historical romance !! you can often get a amazing mixture of unhinged characters w great chemistry and angst .. chandler ainsley and the podcast fates mates have heaps of recommendations, esp for people more new to the genre
Please do this again! Genuinely been stressed about getting back to college tomorrow and this was the most fun I’ve had all week! Maybe don’t read things that are meant to be unhinged next time and try out a few historical romance novels. I find the writing in those not great but better. Mary balogh is one I’ve read recently. Romance books I’d recommend is seven days in June and/or open water. Love lettering by Kate clay born was also and Alexis hall has pretty good prose for a romance
Isn't Verity the book someone called Rebecca (by Daphne Du Maurier) but done worse with smut thrown in? I thought I saw somewhere that someone said that... Maybe it was Hannah from A Clockwork Reader?
I'm sorry for your suffering but also this video was FANTASTIC, it really made my day. If you can find it, and you're willing to embrace the insanity, Mona Lisa Awakening would be a great pick for your next unhinged romance video. There's buckwild fantasy worldbuilding, polyamory, and an alarmingly breakneck fast plot considering the book is only like 200 pages long.
Loved this video, going to avoid all these books though lol. If you do this again I'd recommend Book Lovers, not a big romance fan but I absolutely loved that one!
I think I was confused on my feelings of Verity after finishing because I was so shocked by the messiness of the characters; I could not decipher if my “wtf” moment after concluding the book was a good or bad 😂

This is why I love Emily Henry. She's one of the few romance authors who doesn't romanticise unhealthy relationships 😅
@@wiktoriagrochola3256 right? I was actually surprised that nothing toxic happened in book lovers also the dialogues aren't cringe overall loved the experience I'll be reading her two other books soon
@@nellsea8086 I've read all three of her adult romance books and highly recommend all of them 😃
Ah, romance novels - my personal literary equivalent of a bizarre alien planet (completely unfamiliar and yet strangely fascinating)
Watching Emmie slide from sarcasm into pure despair 😅
I have the same feelings you do for Verity! I don't understand when people say it's an amazing book lol, I truly don't see it. Also love the bangs, I think it really suits you!
I mean its not a great book, but i think it nails the vibe of uncomfortable, rushed intimacy. Its for the morbidly fascinated I guess.
Why is this me? I loved romance in high school, but as I’ve gotten older, I just can’t.
ME TOOO cringy romance novels were all i read in middle & high school
I could listen to emma ranting about grammar forever, that was so funny
Banter! An underrated top tier quality
modern romance novels have shown to me that abstinence is the way to go 👻☠😜
These are not modern romance novels.
Sorry 🤭😂
On your bangs, I think you look good with it especially when your hair is tugged behind ur ears. Love u. 🫶
This video was amazing haha I’m so sorry for your suffering. Hopefully next time you’ll find some actually good romances!
Yea historical romance! Do a review on Kristin Hannah
Lisa Kleypas has a slew of really great historical romance books! ❤️
Ok i’m eleven minutes in and this is already my favorite video you’ve ever made. HOLLY SHIT THIS IS SO GOOD
Love these types of videos - half rant, half review
Not the biggest romance reader, but it's interesting to hear your thoughts !
i love this video too much 😂 romance in general is NOT my genre, but especially these. i just can’t stand them. all my friends love these books, and that is ~fine~, but no one ever cringes with me so this was everything 👏🏼
I think you might like booklovers, the banter in that book is fun. And kiss quotient has a very good sexual tension. Also, please do more vids like this!! 😭❤
I love reading romances especially after reading a classic or fantasy. Always go with no expectations. I honestly saw those covers and I haven’t read those book and I knew you’d hate them lol
Try some Mariana Zapata (slow burn).
Let's all collectively appreciate her for reading Gothikana. I dnfed it around page 20
This vlog makes me feel so much better about my own writing 🙈
Thank you! I’ve been dying to hear your opinions on the genre in general and at least one of these in particular. 🤩
A year late, but this sort of thing inspires me to start writing again. Because I *cannot* do worse than this.
As an f1 fan (Max RB one 😊🧡) I've been avoiding that f1 series just cause I know I would be anoyed with half the stuff but watching this vlog I learned I should avoid it for many more reasons 😭
verity, unapologetically was my fave read of the year maybe the whole reading experience was interesting because I was narrating it to my sister
I love that the baseball cap has no insignias or anything, just pure grey.
NOT THE EXOTIC SPANIARD WOMAN LOL 8:47
it's true, you know: braking before the curve is correct, then accelerate before the straightaway
The effortless ad read transition. You are the cutest! I’m so glad I found your channel and I love your breakdown of what makes a good romance novel.
Uhhh colleen hoover...
I havent read verity and dont plan to so it was nice seeing you read it BUT
I read november 9 and it ends with us and hated them SO much
I just cant stand Colleen Hoovers idea of romance ( you will understand if you read november 9) its so toxic and weird
ah I don't think I'll try any more of her novels, probably not my thing either!
@@emmiereads understandable 😭
It Ends With Us was just....not my style.
@@aliciaohara8794 same it gave me so much wattpad vibes. And trough some other reviews i have seen the book itself has many issues ( not a good ptsd and abuse representation etc.)
these kinds of books should just stay in wattpad PLZ
Thank you for this video, loved your commentary as always. I was wondering if you would do a similar video about romance in classics. Maybe reading Persuasion, Wuthering Heights, North and South etc.
thank you i put colleen hover books on my tbr and after this i'm even more convinced i should take them off
this is def an unpopular opinion but the reason why i love verity and other unhinged books is because i never see them as romance books (because they are obviously thrillers etc) i never focused too much on jeremy and lowen's romance but instead on how insane and unhinged every character is that it's almost funny to me and hence entertaining plus the mystery always adds to why i like it sm edit: however i dounderstand where u are coming from tho especially since u listened to the audiobook version-
It's been an interesting reading marathon 🖤 I love reading novels and you should also post this video💜You are a goddess✨
The quick "He used the wrong your" clip ahahahah
Loved this video! Can you please do an unhinged romance video with classics?! I think most Thomas Hardy novels would qualify!
Whew yes so happy I didn’t buy the physical copy, was a cool idea but the execution could have been so much better :/
@@emmiereads exactly!
I almost bought Gothikana, but thankfully I read the preview on Amazon first and was immediately alerted to the typos and poor writing. Saved myself some money and disappointment, hearing your review really brought it home haha.
OMG FINALLY
I was waiting for this one. I am so happy you posted
haha hope you enjoy!!
I have a big problem reading romance
I never finish them jsjs
Thank you emma for another great video♡
thank you emma for always brightening my day
Your channel helped me a lot .
I m so grateful to you
so glad I can :') thank you so much for being here
How is verity a 'romance' when the romance aspect is the husband being unfaithful to his handicapped wife? Even if someway the plot makes it 'right' it's still what the mc would be thinking is happening.. COHO has some.. interesting morals when it comes to men. Abusive.. cheaters.. uninterested in relationships.. and everybody swoons over her work???? The toxic men always get excused. Not to mention her immediately shutting down a girl who said her son. sexually abused said girl
When you said what the plottwist was I literally said "oh duh" as.. that was really implied.
I read so much F1 fanfiction as a teen and this video inspired me to go back to that instead of spending my money on throttled 😂
I have been waiting for this video!!! YESSSS!! Thanks Emma, you made my day again 💖💖
so glad beautiful
Nailed it! This was one of my favorite videos of yours Emma!! Please do more like these, what a fun time following you on BAD books!! 😂😂❤
the second i saw Penelope Douglas I was like OOHHHH you are in for a roller coaster. her books are their own genre, couldn't even get passed corrupt.
would love to see you read some historical romance !! you can often get a amazing mixture of unhinged characters w great chemistry and angst .. chandler ainsley and the podcast fates mates have heaps of recommendations, esp for people more new to the genre
10:32 emma's smile when she says lewis hamilton!!!
This was so fun!!! I never wanted to read Verity but now I know why everyone is always screaming about the plottwist haha
I already love your videos Emma but making 'bant' into a verb is like next-level. I'm gonna be using that.
I love the bangs on you, Emma!
I never knew you watched F1! I’ve been a fan literally my whole life and this book was… something
Isn't Verity the book someone called Rebecca (by Daphne Du Maurier) but done worse with smut thrown in? I thought I saw somewhere that someone said that... Maybe it was Hannah from A Clockwork Reader?
You should read Haunting Adeline!! Talk about unhinged!! I actually liked the series of books by Kate Stewart Flock, Exodus, and The Finish Line.
Yass lets make this a romance journey!
I’d love it if you made it into series!!
I'm 10 minutes in and I'm loving your reaction 😂 And yessss good banter in a romance book is so sexy
I just LOVED this vlog, specifically your rants.
Loved this video, going to avoid all these books though lol. If you do this again I'd recommend Book Lovers, not a big romance fan but I absolutely loved that one!
Well, I can delete Gothikana from my tbr now haha
I think I was confused on my feelings of Verity after finishing because I was so shocked by the messiness of the characters; I could not decipher if my “wtf” moment after concluding the book was a good or bad 😂
Your guesses on Verity’s plot sound 10x more interesting than what actually happened
YES BANTER is also what I look for in a good romance novel!! I swear, idek what I would do if banter is non-existent in a romance novel srsly.
My vote is longer bangs 😊 and I love that nail colour❣️👀
'not up to speed' - O O O O I had such high hopes for you! - lol
i enjoyed watching this so much!! I would love if this was made into a series.
you rock the bangs!
I've been WAITING for this one Emma!!!
took me forever to get through these books lol it's finally here!!
