it's missing the most important part to say why having the DMA controller is more efficient. now you have to ask the DMA controller (instead of the CPU) which then has to ask the CPU anyway. so why is that faster? could you please explain?
Without DMA controller, I'm pretty sure CPU who was doing all the work of copying data from I/O and transfer, having to stop doing other processes it could otherwise do instead of wasting cpu time. With DMA controller, the CPU is just required for interrupts and is not held for a long time, so it can do more work elsewhere in the system. General reason: In the case you have a slow I/O data transfer, It saves the CPU from doing "useless work".

Operation of the DMA controller is understood. But the basic question is missed during the whole explanation....that is *how the DMA controller is going to be useful...?* My question is: if we are doing multiple steps to store data directly to the memory from IO devices using DMA and CPU too, how did DMA save time and load of CPU??
