Idea for future movie reviews: You could upload a spoiler free version and then put a link to an unlisted longer spoiler-y version at the end of your video :)
I've definitely been getting superhero film fatigue over the last few years, but am actually quite excited to see this one now both you and Dan have said it's genuinely really funny
Suzie Marshall Same! Couldn't even bring myself to finish watching Luke Cage, guess all the superhero movies and shows got too predictable or samey or something but... hopefully this'll be somewhat refreshing :)
I love it whenever you make a video about a movie, I don't know that many people irl who get quite as enthusiastic about film as me so it is always nice to watch your stuff
I would like to thank you Jack. My family and I have always been huge movie buffs. We are always watching and enjoying movies or going to see new releases. Over the years, from reading and reading, I had learned that every frame and line in a movie or production always means something or leads to something. So, over the years I found myself analyzing why a show would zoom in on certain objects or certain frame transitions. You have helped me now look at the bigger picture of a movie all together. Not always analyzing every piece of a movie but looking at all the pieces and how they work together to create a great movie; with character development, and a good, steady, plot. So, thank you jack. I look forward to watching more of your films and making my way through your channel!
Have to say Jack I'm really enjoying this regular uploading thing! I've seen mixed reviews about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but I am still excited to see it since I really loved the first one.
I'm watching it tomorrow and as someone who loved the first film I am excited for this one, but this means the only thing I can talk about is the soundtrack and why ot works so bloody well. It's because it's written into the script, the actors hear the songs while acting and because it means something it's a part of the movie. Which is why when people compare it to SQ I can get really annoyed, that wasn't a great soundtrack it was a good PLAYLIST of great songs that could make it look edgy and new songs by massivly popular groups.
I was also genuinely surprised at how emotional it was! I was surprised that I cared about all of the characters to an extent; Drax and Mantis more than I expected. Honestly there was a scene with Groot where he is walking slowly down a hallway.... to those who have watched it, I have never felt so angry at a group of strangers in a movie in my life!
I don't often comment but I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your interview with Gareth Edwards, as someone who's looking to go into film and TV it was interesting to hear two people so successful on their respective platforms talk about their passion ☀️
Genuinely loved the talk with Gareth Edwards, fantastic as a model of an authentic interview and the kind of thing other interviewers should strive towards. Would love to see more!
I loved the video with Gareth Thomas! I'm not a film fanatic but I learnt a lot and hope you continue to do those videos because there at thousands who DID watch it! Also, I watched JADOT season 1 and 2 and it was bloody amazing. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as i did and I watched it with pretty high expectations :) hope there's a season 3!
my ultimate goal is to be able to edit something that you have made. I love your work and as a film student i really look up to you and what youve created over the years
I saw GOTGVol2 at the London screening on Monday, and I've pretty much been saying exactly what you're saying about it. Especially with the jokes as usually I criticise films for having levity where it's not needed or when it ruins a tense moment but it absolutely worked in this film. I really loved it and the opening sequence was one of my favourite parts; it reintroduces and reaffirms every character brilliantly and really connects the film to the weird psychedelic 80s theme that the GOTG comics actually are. Glad you liked it Jack!
I love the way you talk, everything you say sounds interesting and has some kind of emotion behind it. That's what makes your vlog/reviews so good, I guess. Keep 'em comin'! :D
saw it only a couple of hours ago and man i love it one thing i like in a film is if it can get me to cry, i mean its not hard to make me cry but i think its pretty talented when a film makes salty water fall from my eyes, a person can make you cry when they are in front of you talking and interacting and when you really think about it, its a screen with pictures and images of things that are far from reality. This can do the same thing as a person close to you making you cry. i dont know i just think that's pretty cool man and the soundtrack, its just so good. when you listen to a really good song and the atmosphere is just perfect, like a epic song when you're driving through a mountain range or a cathartic song when you walk hood up in the rain with earphones ignoring the world. ah it just makes me incredibly happy. i felt this way watching the chain play near the closing. ah just wonderful
I can't wait to see Galaxy vol 2. It is always so interesting to hear your take on stuff. I think it is because you are so much more knowledgeable about filming than most people I know. I will have to watch this again after I watch the movie.
I really enjoyed this film! I felt at the start some of the cgi and sets looked a bit cheap and dated but once the story kicked in I forgot all about it and was totally taken into the film! I loved all of the character development, it was fantastic, really well written.
You have yet again managed to sum up my thoughts far more eloquently than I can. I definitely agree with it being a bit clunky in places and having some scenes in there that were fun but not necessarily necessary. Buuuutttt that being said it was still a great film for me, I loved the visuals of it all (It's great to get away from the dark moody comic book film look that's saturated the genre), and I was really surprised in a good way at all the little touching moments. Also I always loved Groot but I didn't think it was possible to want to adopt a CGI character. Well turns out, it is.
You have got me even more hyped to see this on Saturday with my mum! Fleetwood Mac on the soundtrack is a genius idea and with your insights I can tell I'm going to thoroughly enjoy this!
I agree with absolutely everything you said. I liked it better than the first film! I think maybe because they didn't really need to do much "world building", or in this case galaxy building, they were able to stick to character development, which I really appreciated. It was also super refreshing to have the characters be so comfortable with each other. It was just great and I loved it. Thanks for your thoughts, Jack!
I pretty much agree with you all the way through. I think my only gripe with the movie was that there were times when the characters seemed like they suffered from a bit of Flanderization. Hopefully they don't take the character tropes too far in the inevitable follow-up. Overall the movie was fun as heck and made me feel things too
Loved that they went light on the romance and instead focused on the whole sister-bond-thingy. Also for me the movie showed that biological fathers aren't always the best dads and to combine these two messages with a sci-fi action comedy... well done I'd say.
I was hoping you would mention Loki when you said "finally a good villain" cause GOD (that's what Loki is) he was so perfectly written and Tom Hiddleston is amazing.
Those who compile the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy deserve a lot of recognition for being able to create a soundtrack that carry the vibe of the film in an original way. The music was definitely a big factor of why GOTG is such a good subsection of Marvel films.
I saw the first film really late into its cinema run. Everyone had built it up so much that when I finally saw it, I didn't find it as entertaining as I thought I would. This second film made me laugh and tugged at my heartstrings way more. Also I was so happy to see more of Sean gunn because I love Gilmore girls and he is the best.
The fight at the end for me felt like Harry and Voldemort with all the flying about. I too thought this was so much greater than the first. Especially the way the humour was done, so much more authentic than Dead Pool. The character development with Rocket, Nebula - I was laughing one minute and almost wanting to cry the next. Great aesthetic, great soundtrack, exceeded my expectations going in.
Totally agree with what you said bout Dr. Strange, that bit at the end where Wong finally laughs at a joke - killed any tension that that massive fucking fight had created and then any further attempts at serious plot development or finishing just felt odd
I thought it was cool and refreshing that a big hollywood blockbuster didn't shy away from emotion! also actual character development in a majority of the main characters?? loved it.
i seen it yesterday and enjoyed it.. I'm a bit of a Marvel nut and usually when I come out of the cinema after seeing an MCU movie I straight away delve in and analyse everything.. With Guardians Vol. 2 I didn't. I just ENJOYED it. Which is a breath of fresh air for the MCU!
I LOVED the first movie, and actually consider it to be my favorite movie ever. That being said, I think Vol. 2 fits with the first. Not that it's better or worse... it just fits. I don't think Vol. 2 works as a standalone movie, but it definitely works with the first. I loved it thoroughly and I hope to catch it again while it's still in cinemas :)
I really felt like this was the first Marvel film that really nailed an ensemble cast while making each character feel like they had a meaningful part in the film. Mostly this comes down to everything being really strongly tied around a theme. All the subplots and character arcs fit thematically (whereas Civil War, for example, was a bit messy with how some of the subplots dovetailed into the main plot). I also think you're absolutely right, this is the first time since Loki that they've had a really compelling villain. Not perfect, but up there. Potentially my favourite Marvel film?
I had that exact thought about Man of Steel when they were flying about smashing each other except this time I wasn't sat waiting for it to be over and to leave the cinema
Seeing it tonight - can't wait! Also, for the record I would watch a half hour video of you talking with a director but I guess I'm in the minority. I love that kind of stuff.
the way they made ego's character was spectacular. and kurt russell is the best choice by far. i would even go as far to say that he was a more convincing villain than loki. like i was legitimately scared for the galaxy
I went to see the movies in a midnight premiere-marathon kinda deal, and I thought it was brilliant! I'm not always sure how I feel about the relations between the characters, but I think they did a really good job on both films with all of them having actual, fleshed out, different identities and goals. I thought the villain was really interesting (even though I did see it coming a little bit) and their story gave really good food for thought, as they obviously share similarities with things in our own world. I also really like how, unlike in some other marvel films and Sherlock, most of the time you can actually keep up with what's happening rather than going 'aaah' in hindsight. Overall: zero regrets for ruining my chances of a proper night's sleep.
I finally saw the first Guardian movie two nights ago, and wasn't overly excited by it, so I was relieved to hear your initial viewing also didn't go well. I do think I'll enjoy it more the next time I watch it, as I cared more for the characters at the end of the movie than I did through most of it. I'm glad to hear they do more character development in the second movie. *good news* Congrats on meeting Josh Whedon!! There aren't many people I'd get truly excited to meet, but he's one of them. :D
I completely agree! I really enjoyed the first film and this film was really enjoyable. Some parts of this one did feel a bit clunky and the emotions were a bit over kill but the whole villain and the plot with his dad I thought was really interesting. I felt that the whole sister love thing was over kill but it's only a few things that I didn't like about the film. Over all I thought it was well put together and a nice film. Baby groot was super cute but I'm ready for him to be a big tree again honestly. I'm excited for the new film and having Adam warlock as the new villain, that will be really cool to see how they revamp him.
I agree in the caring about all the characters, but I think GotG2 actually managed to get in some backstory for all the characters, and I think that helped massively with the interconnectivity between them all. I hadn't seen the first GotG, and I honestly don't think it mattered as long as you were aware that there was a previous film, since they managed to explain so much with only a few lines, or facial expressions - essentially it just flowed really well. Saying that, I am off to go and watch the first one because volume 2 was wonderful and had the whole cinema in stitches.
I think you should do a review of all (most) of the recent marvel movies - like which ones have the best action sequences, character developments, plot arcs, etc and basically piecewise the different components together to create the best superhero movie of all time. I also think you should make it with someone else (like Hazel or Daniel J.) and compare what your final results are to see how different components of movies have different meanings to different people and because I enjoy your film thoughts/review segments. And your videos in general lol 😄. If you see this - hope you're having a great day!
so far I'm hearing mixed reviews. People seem to like it but point out it has flaws. Not deal breakers, but just little things that irked them, where the first seemed to be almost perfect.
I really liked this film. One scene that I hope people start to talk about is a moment around the middle of the film with Drax and Mantis. Without spoiling, I think it's one of the few times sad backstory is implied rather than told in this film, and through a plot point that's so far pretty much only been used for comedy no less. (Hopefully you get which part I mean)
I was quite impressed as well with this movie. I was expecting it to be fun but didn't expect the layers of the characters. Rocket made me cry. Of all things, ROCKET and freaking Yandu! And when the name Adam was mentioned, I immediately thought, hold on don't tell me they're linking this to Prince Adam from Beauty and the Beast?! Obviously not, but I was really thinking that would be cool if it did lol
My feelings about the film are pretty similar to yours. I think I enjoyed this one more than the first one too, but maybe it's because i haven't seen the first one in a while. But wow I am bloody attached to these characters
The only thing that really annoyed me was the amount of times they had Drax do a booming laugh. After the fourth time, it got a bit old lol. But I'm seeing it again tomorrow because I bloody loved it!
I have never loved a film so much! I laughed, I cried. People could have started doing the macarena halfway through and I wouldn't have cared because BABY GROOT MAN!!!!
Obviously loved it, but yeah, a lot of saying how they feel was happening. It was a very spoon fed story. I didnt leave wanting more or trying to figure out a characters intentions, once it was over; it was just over. Didn't need to think about it again.
Ah damn, just had a look at the views on the Star Wars chat (since you mentioned it), and that disparity really sucks; I love you interviewing and talking about film! As for this, great! I also wasn't totally taken in by GotG, it was fine but not as great as everyone else seemed to think (and I haven't watched it since the first time), but now I'm looking forward to the second one.
I sort of had the opposite experience with the first GotG. I wasn't that interested in the movie at all and went into it with a bad attitude but ended up absolutely loving it. Hopefully I'll feel the same about this sequel.
I'd say I'm quite a big marvel fan, and generally enjoy all the movies, but in some of them (Dr Strange for example) my subconscious just kinda points out 'that wasn't as good as it could be'. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the only ones I watch which I thoroughly enjoy the entire thing and I'm SO excited to see volume 2 on Friday
BUT JACK YOU DIDN'T SAY WHAT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL BIT, I saw the film today and oh my lord i was not expecting that level of emotion to be elicited from me, i went in, having enjoyed the prior film a fair amount, expecting much of the same, a comedic enjoying time with a small amount of weight to it (eg when Groot does the thing in the first one) but when the moment came to it marvel really pulled it out of the bag i was sobbing, it resonated with me and all of my friends i went with. There were so many really good moments during this film ones with real affect. There were a few that genuinely surprised me as well, i personally thoroughly enjoyed the film i don't know about you but I'd love to know what you thought about the emotional moment in the film ( it's pretty obvious which moment I'm on about)
Just wanna be in RUclips all day long I disagree - the winter dodger was menacing, ruthless, brutal and seemed unstoppable. Tell me how that a not villainous?
I totally understand what you mean about the pacing issues, although did feel that this was somewhat solved by the final act. You needed to have spent time not watching big fight scenes for abit so that the final fight didn't feel ott. It's important to establish the relationship between Peter and Ego to as strong an extent as they do too. (Not a spoiler)
Was really hoping you'd be doing a review, because I was very undecided on how I felt about it and we usually have similar opinions on films. I agree with majority of what you're saying, I felt like it went a bit fast but honestly I did feel like some of the gags were forced and dragged out. Also I disagree that it's better than the first one, but other than that. Feelings are pretty mutual!
Huh. This is the video where I decided I like you. Cool. But yeah, agree with your opinions. Went into the movie just thinking "yeah, it's gonna be goofy and lighthearted." But like you said: ended up getting invested in the characters. I wonder if it's because we as an audience got to see them emote more and show their motives, or would it be more because they were sympathetic/empathetic to eachother?
The movie is super funny and I like how the starting scene is Baby Groot dancing to Mr. Blue Sky and the others are just fighting the monster and all that. xD is it safe to say that Baby Groot is the star of this film hahaha ALSO the plot twist tho! I was like "OH MY GOSH HE DID NOT"
I loved it, and baby groot made me so broody and I wanted to just steal him and cuddle him ❤️ but seriously, I thought the plot was great and the comedy sprinkles throughout was placed perfectly. One of my new favourite films.
difference between this thumbnail and the Suicide Sqad one really spoke volumes.
and iiiif YOU DONT LOVE ME NOOOW you will NEVER LOVE AGAAAIN
+doddleoddle you can't whack a bit of Fleetwood Mac
I CAN STILL HEAR YOU SAYING YOU WOULD NEVER LOVE ME AGAIN!
doddleoddle I can still hear you saying I will never break the chains
Hey! LOL i got the lyrics wrong!!
@@freyajones2166 *epic drum buildup*
You didn't touch your hair enough.
Daniel J. Layton hi dan how's it going
I like how he is still salty about suicide squad
amalia clements
who isn't
amalia clements i'm salty because they fucked up two of my favourite characters and now they're mainstream because of a bad performance.
i agree. it was shit
amalia clements one of the wrost moments of human history, how could you forget it?
yeah no iron man 2 and 3 were worse
I'd really like to see a comparison of the most common mistakes that DC makes as opposed to Marvel.
Karly Mullen that seems like a really good idea
+PotatoXHead97 I think it'd be very entertaining.
Hmm... maybe but DC movies are nutritiously bad
"You actually care about the characters..." loving the subtle shade to suicide squad
Nathan Holstrom honestly you're very right
Idea for future movie reviews: You could upload a spoiler free version and then put a link to an unlisted longer spoiler-y version at the end of your video :)
MadE Yes to this idea!!

Legend says if you're early, Jack will ignore you and I'm perfectly fine with that
Jack wtf I was being sarcastic
You were trying to get a reply
That. was. the. joke.
Still top comment so it's not all bad
Killjoy ayyyy nice name 👌
I always really respect your opinion on film, you always have a really well balanced, well supported, and analytical opinion. Major props

Just so jealous of you meeting James Gunn and the cast mates! I can't wait to see GOTG Vol 2, glad you liked it.
Fuck me i'm early

I'm glad to hear they do more character development in the second movie. *good news* Congrats on meeting Josh Whedon!! There aren't many people I'd get truly excited to meet, but he's one of them. :D
I am going to watch Gotg2 tomorrow and you just got me SO much more hyped than I already was (if that's even possible, lol)! Can't wait!
I was sad at the end when I thought he wasn't going to mention the soundtrack - fleetwood Mac specifically - but I guess I'm kind of psychic
can't wait till GCSEs are over so I can actually fucking see this film
Most Likely Mu Trust me, they never end😭 I'm now onto Alevels and like, I thought it would be better but i was so wrong.
Mollyisnotonfire :^(
I completely agree!
I love the review Jack, you need to do more bro!
I'm going to the midnight screening tonight straight after a 12 hour shift I'm gonna be so exhausted but idc I can't WAIT
Please don't feel disheartened about the director interview. I absolutely loved the interview and the fact that it could happen.
so far I'm hearing mixed reviews.
+CrispeeChips LOVED that part
Seeing this tomorrow. I am super excited and your review has just made me even more so. Woo.
Just sat here waiting for the DC fanboys to start a war against Jack Howard now...
About Man of Steel: "I don't fuckin' like that film." Gold
THE FREAKING SOUNDTRACK
Thank you so much!!!! I'm seeing the movie today and i was kind of worried that it would be boring!
I have never loved a film so much! I laughed, I cried. People could have started doing the macarena halfway through and I wouldn't have cared because BABY GROOT MAN!!!!
It was hard to go from crying from laughter to crying from heartache
would be nice to see you do more movie reviews jack
I completely agree with you Jack, that's exactly what I said when I left the theatre
I sort of had the opposite experience with the first GotG. I wasn't that interested in the movie at all and went into it with a bad attitude but ended up absolutely loving it. Hopefully I'll feel the same about this sequel.
Okay now I really need a rant video about Man of Steel.
Yo yo yo I'm going to Lincoln uni to do media production next year, saw your face in the prospectus too ✌🏼
regarding the marvel villian problem: i agree but i thought zemo was pretty good as well, he is very underrated in my opinion
There were a few that genuinely surprised me as well, i personally thoroughly enjoyed the film i don't know about you but I'd love to know what you thought about the emotional moment in the film ( it's pretty obvious which moment I'm on about)
Are you saying the winter soldier wasn't a good marvel villain? IMO, he's one of the best ever in cap 2!!
Robbie Reilly Bucky was more like a victim that a villain. A proper villain must have the will of being a bad person.... the winter soldier wasn't.
Blue Sky and the others are just fighting the monster and all that. xD is it safe to say that Baby Groot is the star of this film hahaha
ALSO the plot twist tho!
