U R gold, lady...TRULY!! I wish I could find more bloggers/dyers like U online: not skipping steps while filming using heavy editing, pretending that the process to complete the project is going to be an easy one, and that you have never made mistakes.WOW! I feel that I have been lifted to another level of performance!! I am pretty sure that the IOD's sisters would be pleased with what U shared with us on this video. Great learning ( eye opener!) experience. THAAAAAAANK YOU!
This is a perfect example of the trials and errors that folks don't normally see. My husband reminds me that if you're not messing up, you''re not doing anything! :) This is how we learn. Thanks Lynne!
You are a jewel! I’m getting ready to begin my first inlay project and I so appreciated this because I was going to wax finish. Whew! You saved me such trouble. 💕
this is excellent Lynne! Thank you for being so honest about mistakes and especially how that doesn't mean failure. You show how to fix mistakes that we all make! Love your videos
I’m so glad you talked about slowing down and enjoying the process…. I find as an artist that my art is my therapy when I can relax and find some peace in this fast paced world.
I haven't even finished watching yet...as soon as you got to the mister water and polyacrylic recipie .. I had to comment!! The best video ever! I love what you've done here and how much you teach us! Thank you sooooooo much! I needed this desperately! ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing your mistakes! I'll learn from them and practice board first then small project then something bigger. Also I totally agree with you on enjoying the process and the challenge of just figuting it out. Plus I wanted to see that inlay on yellow--gorgeous.
Hi Katherine! I’m so glad you found the video helpful. I’m always willing to share the real deal. I make lots of mistakes, and always find them an opportunity to learn 💓
Thank you for sharing your experience. For some reason, I have stayed away from the inlays. They seem to restrictive and for the most part everyone's projects look similar. Never say never 😉
I can certainly understand! It’s always a little challenging to invest in a try a completely new medium. We are all learning about the new inlays. I love that you can get so many different looks with the same products. I have a few posted in my IG and FB and even here. . I’m so glad you are willing to consider the options!
Ellen, I really appreciate you trial and errors. I did a huge project with inlays and it was crazy. But beautiful! Yes I learned about the mister topcoat from IOD. What makes me laugh is all the projects demonstrated were small😂😂 love you channel.
I love your work, your honesty , your down to earth way, your excitement, your gentle spirit, your service and products, your genuineness, your integrity! Thank you ❤️
I'm so thankful you posted this, I watched it when it was first out and have since bought inlays to do on a piece and came back the this video for reference (and probably will again lol) thank you for sharing your experience
oh my goodness. This is totally why I could not bring myself to even CONSIDER trying these inlays. Well, one of the reasons. Mostly, I'm not really into the chintz-look. However, besides understanding how to do it, beginning to end, I can actually see how beautiful this particular inlay can be....and I'm not particularly a "blue" person. LOL, go figure. Thank you, Lynne. I appreciate your talents as well as your honesty and willingness to share both.
Hi Sharon! Thanks so much for your feedback. The inlays are such an interesting new product. I have no doubt we will be seeing more of them! I’m so happy you have been following our journey.
@@ellenjgoods I made a cute picture with Grisaille Toile. It’s precious. Next, I have a pretty tray with glass I want to use the Rose Chintz on and then my gate leg table with the Indigo Floral. (I think I’m in trouble 😆) So excited. 😘💖
I ❤ the Bosa nova music 🎶 I also use Water base finish with water in all sorts of materials, I recently did a closet makeover and I used it on the baskets to make them more wipeable It works like a charm! I am so sorry you had to redo everything that was a lot of work. I currently have a project like that but I have to redo.... I call it my learning days😅😂 Beautiful paint inlays! I want to try this soon. Thanks for the detailed instructions. 😊 Happy weekend!
I really did hesitate to share my experience… but you know what? We ALL have these projects! The ones we mess up, rush through or feel like tossing. It’s all part of learning!
You are a great teacher! I can’t get excited about the inlays though…I’m not a fan of busy furniture. Just me. Thank you for sharing all your projects!!! ♥️♥️♥️
I don’t know what’s cuter….you with those pink cheeks and that hipster hat (and Tacos t-shirt) or that beautiful combo of yellow and blue French provincial loveliness. Love it all !! 💙💛
Thanks so much!! I have my inlays waiting for me to get going!!! You just saved me a lot of trouble. I agree about enjoying the process of creating and slowing down ! Love all your projects. You’re so talented and inspiring ❤️
Thank you Cheryl! I know that it is often fear of failure or fear of perfection that keeps us from trying something new. You’ve got this!!! You brought me so much joy this morning 💓
Great video and the dresser will be / is lovely. Appreciate your honesty and advice about a practice or test board first; however, shouldn’t the product come with directions and information on how to finish properly? Maybe you’re like me and didn’t read the directions until it was too late. All that to say… you do beautiful work and are so much fun to watch!!! ❤️
Question?? I did the sealer but it wasn't enough. Mine has done the same thing. When you sanded down a second time did you have to get the wax off so it wouldn't gum up? or do you just sand until the inlay is off ? Thank you so much for this video...
Ellen, I had heard somewhere that the IOD inlays can be used up to 3 times? If so, is the color less intense? If you would please let me know I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Yes! That’s true. I did a video showing how I used them multiple times. They do fade with each use, but that’s the charm.., they look a little more distressed with each use.
First , love the hat Eddie would totally approve! Thanks so much for another great tutorial, Lynne. I have this inlay and have promised myself to. O longer be afraid to take it out of the package and get it on the piece I have waiting for it. Once again you work all the kinks out in advance and share them with us so we don’t have to. Would using a water based topcoat be okay in the spray bottle? If not, what is a polycrylic, I have never used one before? Thanks again 😍
The hat! 😂 So, most water based topcoats ( like Fusion Toughcoat, DIY BigTop, General Finishes Flat out ) are polycrylic. They are water soluble . I hope you give the inlays a go. They are a very exciting option for decor!
Thank you for the video! I did try a practice board for the Moroccan paint inlay and it didn't turn out well. Im going to try the damp cloth instead of misting with water. That makes sense to me that it would really get the inlay to adhere. My question is, what do you do about the wrinkles in the paper?
Hi Ellen, thanks for sharing! I do have a question. What would happen if you just used a polycrylic over the inlay and skipped the water/poly spray step? Do you think the pigment would move?
Yes. The pigments are water soluble so they would definitely smudge. I know some people x have been able to apply a quick coat in one direction with some success, but I do think the mist application is one easy step that could prevent issues with pigment movement.
I did a light coat of a spray fixative after letting the inlays dry for a few days (a set of coasters). I let the fixative dry overnight. Even after that there was some slight movement of the pigment when I went to apply the poly. Next time I'll try 2 coats of your water/poly combo. Your project came out beautiful despite the issue with the inlays.
Hi Ellen! I made a faux vintage sign board with IOD’s Gregory’s Seed Catalogue paint inlay and IOD Painterly Florals. I used Krylon Low Odor Clear Finish spray in several light coats. It stopped the paint from moving and sealed it enough to add a clear top coat.
Thks so much!!! I'm struggling with inlays. First time for me w inlays. Ughhh. Only one area adhered?? I redid again. Paint would not release. Question the Half & half sealer you mixed is the before or after you are complete? Thks.

Thanks for sharing your honest representation of this very “Hot” trend 👏😊We can as a community learn from ours and others experiences rather than you glossing over these tools for enriching the use of new products!
Your project turned out well and you've provided a nice tutorial. The DIY brand of paint (clay based) does not perform well for me. Too many clumps. Working dry time too fast. Paint does not lay down nicely. I've also experienced issues with one layer and color of DIY pulling away from another layer when using rub-on transfers (yes, dry time was more than adequate...at least 24-36 hours between coats). Too many issues for the expense and poor end-result.
Glad I saw this before I experimented! YIKES
Thank you for the insight , I know I tend to rush projects ..not always productive

What if you let the wax cure for a month maybe you don’t have to start from the beginning.
It had already cured for over a month. 😢
why is the inlay purple?
The color is Indigo and that is how IOD designed it.
This paint inlay concept seems fairly complicated. And can get expensive if you make a mistake.
I get it!
