Fantastic post - thanks for the trip down memory lane 20-odd years ago, what an amusing video game this was, especially in 2 player mode with your brother!
I remember this. My best friend and I could play this for hours the whole summer brake. We got pretty good, 248k points. However that is possible to remember 30 years later.
Oh the memories. Hearing the song and even seeing the familiar fight moves takes me back to a childhood spent wasting time in front of the ever trusty Atari ST.
you are quite right. The in-built MIDI lead to well developed software for handling external audio hardware... creating the template for the sequencers like Cubase, Logic and co. used today. The Amiga sort of shot itself in the foot by having good but not good enough (we wanted 16 bit 64 channel!) audio and thus developing trackers rather than sequencers taking advantage of the in-built 4-channel 8-bit sample based sound processing.
@@thejoyofsticks Yeah, I recognized them too! I think that sounds in the classic "International Karate" on 8-bit Atari also come from "Enter The Dragon".
I know the Atari ST was capable of SID emulation. Having the c64 track by Rob on top of this version, I would consider the ST version superior to the Amiga on the chip-song front due to that I never really liked the sampled instrument-choices.
I know I'm massively biased, but this is why I often prefer the ST music over the Amiga version. I actually like the lo-fi square wave sound of the ST.
Ohhh Yeeees ! One of my favourite games on my Atari ST ! I think I´am gonna be in the basement to find the box where it is in. Realy cool upload ! Thank´s ! Good old times remembered !
I played the Amiga version at an event a while back. I was happy to learn that the gameplay was absolutely identical. On the music front, though, our opinions diverge. The YM chip square wave sound juxtaposed against the traditional Japanese harmonies is just *chef kiss
when you do the low kick (down + fire), if i remember rightly its a sample from 'enter the dragon' of a guy saying 'O'HARA!!!', i only found that out a few years ago when i saw the film, but when i played this game as a kid i was like 'damn, that really sounds like he's saying 'o'hara!' haha
My friend and I used to practically wet ourselves playing this game. The only other games that ever got these kind of laughs were Bruce Lee for the Atari 800 and Mortal Kombat. I love tongue-in-cheek fighting games.
@stillfindingmyway Same here! Hearing the music and seeing the opening logo was a total flashback. All of my hardware still works (I think), the games we had on that platform back then were nothing short of amazing. Quite incredible what they accomplished with a 16-color palette as well.
The default high scores initials are: WHY NOT TRY PRE SSI NGT HEA STE RIS KKE YOR THE TKE YFO RTR OUS ERS TOD ROP ORT HES KEY FOR SHA DOW S.. .MO STO FTH ETW ENT YCO DES ARE FOU RLE TTE RSL ONG FOR EXA MPL ETR YTY PIN GFI SH. Which means: Why not try pressing the asterisk key or the T key for trousers to drop or the S key for shadows... Most of the twenty codes are four letters long for example try typing fish.
@TubeDestroyer2010 If you'd have said that 20 years ago, I would have agreed with you. But I actually think the chip sounds of the YM chip have aged really well. I much prefer listening to YM and C64 SID chip music than MODs etc.
@stillfindingmyway Exactly! 8MHz was enough back then. We've been spoiled by 4GB graphics cards and so forth. It was great when the coders wrote games for the hardware of the day, instead of million-dollar paychecks. Which ST do you have? I have a 520 modded to a 1040...it's been in the box for awhile, but I'm guessing it still works after all these years. They were built like tanks.
Nothing better than up+fire to jump kick blue and then (i think) fire + up diagonal in the opposite direction to facing to spin kick and crack red across the chin
Never had an ST, but this looks quite familiar to me... I had the Amiga-Version and it was just about exactly the same. I spent several weeks (maybe even months?) while playing... a great game! Even nowadays I'd like computer games being that simple to understand and worth being played. There was such a bunch of great games in the 89's/90's... and all what's left today is a photorealistic graphic... that's why I still prefer classic computers... there it was just the fun which was important.
My first ever 3 hit combo!! PUNCH, KICK and NUTTTT!! iv never seen a fighting game since that u could NUT your apponent. We need to see and up to date version of this on the ps3 and xbox360!
It's down and the opposite direction ;) but yes you are right - very satisfying. There is better, though: succesfully pulling of the double flying kick is euforic!
Strange how the first port of IK to Atari ST had its graphics completely redrawn to be technically superior, while this is obviously much closer to the 8-bit versions. Not sure why they did that, but oh well.
@NicoWilliams09 There are lots of little secrets in the game like that. They happen at random, but you can type 'PAC' to trigger it. I guess Namco wouldn't let you get away with stuff like that these days. ;)
It's funny how the referee always hopes for Red and Blue to do better and improve, but a single loss by White leads to him being thrown out of the tournament!
I remember a few: J - change the judges outfit * - change the sunrise F keys - change the speed of the game Type these to make stuff appear: pac, fish, peri There’s a key to change the colour of the shadows too, iirc.
this was the bollocks. Played this game for hours and hours. Like most games of that time required rediculous amounts of timing and skill to get very far.
@@thejoyofsticks on atari 520 stfm inter game was that shield kicking bombs and timing to break wooden pricks when u played 1v1 maybe only against the computer it was disabled maybe but I am sure bro I played this game with a friend too much
@@daliborsiska430 I've just had a look at a RUclips video and there was a board breaking round on the first game, International Karate. The game in this video is International Karate Plus!

Yes! You had to press T to drop the trousers! :D That was very amusing to a 12 year old, let me tell you! I hope we are more understanding to our children, but still there are culture clashes. My boy watches Stampylongnose religiously, and man... that really tests my patience! :D Thanks for watching.

Definitely in the top 10 best Atari ST games ever.
It's my number one!
Yeah it was great back in the day
Just hearing the music takes me back to the magic of childhood and the endless hours of pure infatuation. I was there man.
The joys of a successful headbutt rampage!

This is a very simple, repetitive game but it certainly does get under your skin. I too could play it for hours, even in single player.
Oh the memories. Hearing the song and even seeing the familiar fight moves takes me back to a childhood spent wasting time in front of the ever trusty Atari ST.

I grew up playing this on an Amiga so it's weird to see the Atari ST version. It is almost identical except the music on the Amiga is way better.

Sounds in the game clearly come from fights in Bruce Lee movie, "Enter the Dragon".
One of the only occasions where the ST soundtrack was better than the Amiga because of the excellently composed chip tunes!
Awesome Atari ST !
Loved that one ! I just played it now but I can't remember the moves :'(
Ahhhhh, great days!!
@opelcambo Hahaha, yeah, I remember that. I think it was press T (I'm guessing for trousers) and down they came!
Music by Dave Lowe? Is it perhaps the same David Lowe who composed music for BBC World 2001-2003?
@MediaFilter Ah, meant MK4 btw. Oh and dropping pants in IK+ was the bomb.

Found a boxed IK+ whilst going through some boxes
I think this is what they were playing in the movie Bloodsport. Arcade version though.
Not at all. It was Karate Champ.
There never was an arcade version of this. Homecomputers only.
Just watched this and realised how old I am 😂 great game
Arrrr those damn glowing balls!
One of the best games on the ST - period
