We used a sheet of plywood, foam mattress topper, quilt batting, fabric, roofing nails, and button cover kits to create a budget-friendly headboard for a large, king-sized bed. The headboard is mounted on the wall once it's assembled together. Links below⬇️

My wife and I made this over our holiday break. Turned out great! I went with screws instead and had no issues. We also went with a sheet set, planning on using the remaining material to make a frame on the floor of the bed, Total cost for the headboard was $121.

YES!! Now all she needs is three matching frames with complimenting photos in that space above the headboard (or mirrors, whatever floats your boat) and floor to ceiling curtains on those windows to make the space look put together. That headboard made such a huge difference.

Try using deck nails, they are spiraled, will still go in sraight and will not pull out. Also my pet peeve in diy projects is, the back is never finished, at least, a cheap coat of paint and a strip of same fabric folded over, say 3 inches wide glued over raw edges on back to look like a finish binding, then it could be used anywhere for different projects. Fabulous idea, washers are genious and tufting due to washers is fabulous !!!

I did this, but I used styrofoam, filler and blue velvet cloth. I glued the foam together on the ends to get the width I needed. I glued down the filler to the styrofoam, put the cloth over, used long pearl headed push pins so they easily slid into the foam. I then gently pulled the fabric taught and pinned it all around the back of the foam and glued it so it would stay. I have an adjustable frame so I just stuck it to the wall above the bed with 3M adhesive strips. Very light and easy to move. Took me less than 2 hours not including glue drying time. Its very elegant.

Tips: made King size according to tutorial. The 9.5 in spacing did not work out well...until I realized I needed to start from the center with the first row. Also there was a lot more than 5.5 in. on the bottom, but then realized that's behind the bed so it didn't matter. The button kit is a little tricky, so get extra's. It helped to used a little hammer to pound the blue thing that seats the back on the button.
Put some kind of drop cloth around the hole when using the glue to put the buttons on. It oozes at inopportune times. I haven't hung it on the wall yet, but I'm really happy with the looks of it. I made it with brown faux suede I found at the second hand store for only $5.00! (Kinda makes up for the extra I spent buying the wrong size mattress pads to begin with). Thank you Chelsea for this video!

Michelle xc so 125-150 for materials and then your time ... sounds very cost ineffective

but you get what you want and the fabric you want. compared to buying offline and not knowing the true color or fabric texture

I think if you have a lot of thise tools on hand it makes it cost effective. What is included in the total price?

Fabulous!!!! I got to try this. I want to do a tufted headboard without tufting the usual way using a needle etc. and hammering in nails seems to be easier.

Thank you! We were planning on buying a house but where I live, real estate is bonkers even in the suburbs, we have to postpone our plans. In order for our daughters to have their own room, we have to move everything around in the apartment. Our double living room will be divided and we are moving our bedroom in on of the halves, our current headboard is 11 inches deep which narrows down the space in the room. I will be storing the headboard and I didn’t want to spend hundreds on a new one!
