Agreed, I've always delegated my excesses to an advisor, since suffering major portfolio loss early 2020, amid covid outbreak. I'm now semi-retired and only work 7.5 hours a week, with barely 25% short of my $1m retirement goal after subsequent investments to date.

In Australia our SCHD version is VHY ASX. It yields around 5% p.a. compared to 3.5% SCHD.
We don't have a Realty Income equivalent in AUS I believe. Besides CharterHall Dexus and CIP Centuria.
VanEck LEND invests in ARCC MAIN etc. and yields 10% p.a.
We also have CGT discounts for holding ETFs for >12 months.
Investing $20,000 a year for 10 years into a portfolio yielding 8% p.a. average, and after tax 6% p.a. will create a portfolio of $265,643.27 and an annual cash flow stream of $15,938.59 p.a. after tax.
Investing $40,000 a year for 10 years into the same portfolio for 10 years at 6% net after tax rate = $31,877.19 p.a. after tax.
That is doable if you live in a fully paid off house. Groceries are around $10,000 p.a. single person, $10,000 insurance, car, transport. $10,000 for holidays and entertainment (modest lifestyle).

SCHD is a solid choice for dividend investors, especially in uncertain markets. With its consistent dividend growth and solid track record, it feels like a reliable long-term hold. I’m focusing on ETFs like SCHD to balance growth with stability, especially as we navigate the impacts of rising interest rates.

To me, the crucial aspect is that if you invest and have additional income apart from dividends, you can sustain your lifestyle solely through dividends without the need to sell investments. This enables you to pass on those dividends to your children, granting them a significant advantage in life. In 2023, I received dividends amounting to $52,000..

I would recommend engaging the services of a financial advisor to assist you in diversifying your portfolio. This can be achieved by incorporating mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), the 11 GICS (Global Industry Classification Standard) groups, inflation-indexed bonds, and stocks of companies with stable cash flows instead of focusing solely on growth stocks, which are valued based on future earnings potential. By following these principles and leveraging insights from my Certified Financial Planner (CFP), I have managed to generate approximately $900,000 in earnings since 2023.

This will be forever debated until the end of time for people who don't want to realize taxes when dividends are paid, but having passive income without having to sell shares of a quality company can be a lifeline in between a job loss or other financial crisis. For some, cash flow right now is more critical than a peak total return when you're 80. I know too many people that didn't even make it to be that old.

Investing long-term in ETFs and high-dividend stocks is a straightforward way to build generational wealth. Notably, over 80% of billionaires are stock investors, expanding their billion-dollar portfolios. The rich do what the poor fear!

Absolutely! Wealth is made in growth investing . We aren’t in a bear market, but nibbling heavy red days has proven to be fruitful for me over 9 years of investing. I am at 2.25 mil. Biggest positions PLTR, TSLA, SCHD, VOO, and now looking to build up DRGO alongside finding quality value/growth stocks to buy. I got $48k divs last year in taxable divs. Q3 taxable divs last year was $18,388. Don't sell when the market is down. Having a skilled CFA that puts the time in to do in-depth research can be invaluable in strategizing your portfolio.

The truth is, the role of an investment advisor can often be overlooked but should never be underestimated. After facing a significant portfolio loss in 2020 during the COVID pandemic while trying to manage my investments on my own, I decided to reach out to an investment advisor. At that time, I had about $126K left in my portfolio. Now, without having to lift a finger, I'm semi-retired, working only 7.5 hours a week, and I'm just 15% short of my $1 million retirement goal thanks to my subsequent investments.

In my view, if you make sound investments that generate additional income alongside dividends, you can eventually live off that dividend income without the need to sell assets. This approach not only provides financial security for yourself but also creates a lasting legacy for your children, giving them a financial advantage. A 5% dividend or less is a terrible investment when you can get 5% in an FDIC insured savings account or T-bills.
If you buy or hold a stock for the dividend then you are at the mercy (ha!) of the company. The minute they cut dividends, even by a small amount, the stock will fall out. On the other side, when bond and treasury yields increase all the Boomer dividend stocks tank.

Nobody ever talks about how dividends are automatically taxed as short term gains at your tax bracket rather than long term at 15%. The more wealth you have, the worse an idea it is.

Shockingly a lot of people dont understand that dividends arent free money. Dividends are a FORCED sale. A $10 stock become a $9 stock when it pays a $1 dividend. If you need cash in retirement then it could be a good idea for you. For me if rather not pay taxes on it. And I'd rather the value of the dividend stay in the share price.

Of course nobody needs dividend, and people need to invest in nice growth stocks or at least good companies with somewhat growing income (eps)😊

Think of your portfolio as a black box that only shows a total value and you can extract money from it as needed. Do you care if it's from dividend or growth inside? You just want the maximal total value at a volatility you can handle. Dividends are irrelevant, total return is the only metric that matters.

Dividend investing is the worst equity strategy proven scientifically for three reasons: 1) it picks stocks that are flat and mostly value stocks that underperform market average 2) it is the worst strategy per taxation reasons that you pay excessive tax upfront on gains 3) every dollar given as dividends takes a dollar from company market cap which is more tax efficient and growth efficient in the long run
