For my fine type 4 hair, leaving crochet braids in my hair for too long put too much stress on my delicate edges and perimeter of my head. I think the weight of the added hair put too much stress on my strands as my hair grew out. I don't think people with fine hair can wear these styles as long as naturals with thicker strands.
It’s interesting that you posted this because I decided to wear twists during the Summer. I thought to myself people are gonna see me how they see me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LaShonda Dunbar Good for you!!👏🏾👏🏾 I just made the same decision and did the exact same thing TODAY!!! I felt a little self conscious but stopped caring. My hair felt nice and aired out. I put a few decorations in the front and kept it moving.
Yes! That's the issue with the whole "wash your hair in protective styles". I found out about using ACV to cleanse the scalp and imma just do that lol. I've only tried ut for braid extensions though. Never done it for natural twists.
Thank you so much I went natural after 20 or more years I had a perm I decided to let it go I stop getting perms since last October my hair was thinning out real badly I was so disappointed so now I just finished cutting the perm out a month ago I tell you I went though so ma different products I had to just stop !!!!! Nothing was working now I know ! I just started wear braids small braids now I just leave it alone I thought washing would do it No !!!! Leaving it dirty NO!!! Like you said just leave it alone !!!! For wee protective style now and now I am going to watch it grow !!!! Thank you 😊 🙏🏽
LOL! Chazz, you and Bear just make my day! I have heard the dirty hair myth, but what you're saying about protective styling makes sense. Good information!
I agree with you, low manipulation grows hair. My hair used to break a lot when I used to wash it every week. I now wash my hair once in a month and the breakage has reduced about 90%. This is what works for me.
You said “I like my hair i like what she does i like every phase that shes in” 😭🙏👏💯 Im keeping this with me forever; Super powerful affirmation for my hair appreciate that and your knowledge!
Ugh I wish I could keep my hair in a puff for long periods of time but the way my hair would shrink and curl up on itself 😫 those knots, tangles and breakage when detangling after isn’t worth it. I always have to twist my hair or do flat twists or something so it doesn’t curl up on itself. Also how do you prevent single strand knots and fairy knots because I still get them even though I keep my hair in low maintenance styles?
Shampooing my hair in sections braided with toddler girl barrettes at the ends folded over once with another Barrette on it has helped tremendously as well as putting jbco on the ends. What I can't get out I just knew it with the scissors because it's really only one or two out of the entire head every now and then, not every time I detangle.
For me also using a fine-tooth comb just at the ends where the single strand knots are worked a lot better as well then finger detangling or using a wide-tooth comb. Different areas of my hair require different types of combs. And I learned I really need to use a comb as opposed to finger detangling, it is less Tangled when I do that and also lessen the number of single strand knots which was absolutely horrible when I first went natural. There were mats as well in my hair.
@@sable7114 wow i never thought of using different combs in different areas 😭 i kinda just stopped using them altogether cause they were causing me excessive breakage
@@Nailbae yes, it has helped. Definitely whiter tooth combs at the roots and about a third down but particularly at the ends where my hair is not as thick, because I was transitioning, The Wider tooth comb could in no way get the tangles or the single strand knots out but a very fine tooth comb did without much breakage at all. My hair definitely must be moistened some with water before I start detangling and another thing that I fine works a little bit better for me is starting my detangled at the roots and at the moment I feel resistance I started two or three in below that resistance and it's sort of like helps the hairs Glide out, the shed hear Glide out more easily sort of like sweeping a floor where you start in the corners and you gradually pull the dust out. You don't necessarily always start from the middle of the floor. Seems like I have less shed here when I do that. It may have something to do with the length of the hair so that when I'm starting at the ends it is too hard to pull longer hair that shed with the balls still being very close to the roots through all of that hair so it's best to grab it closer to the roots first and just gently pull but moving down a little bit and sliding it a little more and then move down a little bit more and slide it some more if that makes sense at all. I should be in bed right now so it probably doesn't make sense.
I love this video! I am natural my profile pic is not updated. However I am definitely building the confidence to rock my wash and go when it's in fro stage. For some reason people when they my fro look at me like I'm crazy or they have never seen a fro. It's quite frustrating. However I know it's all about confidence and loving yourself.
Girl! You can't shame Bear for saying a bonnet is a protective style lol. It's a very valid protective style, if it's lined with satin! I really like what you said about customizing a protective style to work for ourselves specifically. I've realized that there are only 2 things that really protect my hair from breakage: 1/stop unnecessarily manipulating my hair when it's wet or damp (like detangling, twisting, etc...). 2/stop wearing my hair out in low humidity environment without protection (like a satin lined bonnet, a satin scarf/headwrap or a wig).
I needed this video. After 20 years of wearing my hair natural, I've gone back and forth with protective styles. I was sticking to mini twist because I wasn't confident enough to rock mini braids like I really wanted to. It's on now.
Your hair has gotten so long! I'm so impressed as well as inspired! I've been natural for over 10years and went from long hair to long damaged hair. I've also cut my hair many many times because I'll like a certain style I want to rock and after a while and then start over. I've even had a boy cut and wore that for almost 10 years because it was sooooo easy. But now my goal is to grow it and not cut it. This is testing my patience but I've gotten better especially when I see the obvious growth. So keep it up on your journey!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I agree with this 100%. I went from nape length to waist length and it’s majorly because of true low manipulation styles. The twists and loose buns were best for me. Great content!💓
I currently keep my hair in crochet hairstyle . I love it ! It gives me the look I want and protects my hair at the same time . Before I started I cut 5inches off and 4 months later it’s grown past the length I started with .
Hey Chazzz 👋🏽 I enjoy your videos 😁 I work from home so I keep my hair moisturized and in a few twists with a silk scarf 🧣 and it has helped with manageability. Thanks for sharing 😊
Been rocking twists for the passed few months now, and my hair does so much better with them. It's easier to moisturize and seal my ends, plus my buns come out super cute. Now my hair is bra strap length. Woot woot!!! ^_^
I contemplate getting a hairstylist to take out my braids or twists, but that's extra money and I barely make any money as it is. I also feel that sometimes these stylists be doing weird things. Every time I had locs or twists I noticed some of them seem to be connected together by a strand of hair. Like two twists look separated, but if I pick it up both of them move and I feel a strand of hair connecting the two.
S-wo in the past, I have used Jane Carter Solutions Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner to help remove my braided hair. It works wonders. Another product I’ve used that works really well is Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier.
I recently learned I was bad at washing my hair. Like my scalp will just have buildup that I thought I was removing (I think it’s buildup when it turns white ) but anyway, I didn’t know that I had to really get in there. It’s all so much to learn so I thank you for this video!
I agree with everything you said except for the statement that you can "not moisturize or detangle and put your hair in a protective style and nothing will happen." No two naturals are alike. My niece and bestfriend constantly wear protective styles, but still have breakage because they do not properly moisturize while in protective styling. To me, protective styles are only protective if you are still caring for the health of your hair as well. I've made this mistake myself in the past by wearing braids for months and not properly hydrating my hair. When I took the braids out, my hair was dry, weak and fragile, thus where split ends come from... meaning loss of length retention because it breaks or needed to be cut.
Your hair has grown so much. If only I were older and had my own money, I would buy all that I could just to make my hair as healthy, and beautiful as yours
Hi I’ve really been having a hard time trying to maintain my hair and I’m only thirteen I just don’t know what works best for me I’ve had a little bit of breakage and I’m trying to grow my hair out again and your videos are really helpful so thank you 😊😊
Yesssss. I just subscribed friend lol. I started growing the crown of my hair out 2yrs & 4 months ago. And just learned how to flat twist and currently teaching myself braiding. Protective styles are EVERYTHING
Your skin looks so flawless!...I agree with everything you said in this video. Frame of mind has everything to do with our level of confidence. You made a point about detangling. The way we detangle depends on how much length we retain. I'm learning to be more patient and stop reaching for the comb so much and just gently finger detangle. Or gently use a wide tooth comb. I'm still a work in progress tho.
i feel like type 4b 4c hair is meant to wear mostly in protective styles. our hair type gets the most breakage and single strand knots; but when we wear it protected in braids or twists etc.. it flourishes. look at the people that have dred locks, they hair be growing pass they ass! and the reason to that is because there hair is not being manipulated.
True it grows, but a good bit of that is shed here that can't escape as well as it tries to slide out it pains a little bit longer than the hair actually is. Also makes the hair look thicker than it normally would be.
You’re so gorgeous and I love your energy. I’ve been on the natural hair journey and lately I’ve finally found a protective style I feel comfortable with rocking out in public. And I get compliments as well and it’s so easy to manage. And I love how it looks when I’m ready to take it out and rock it that way. My last perm was in 2017, April 29th and my hair has cams along way. The sad part is I never needed the perm (I was young my grandmother made that choice.) But anyways my hair is so thick and getting so long and growing so fast. But I love watching videos like this getting tips and learning new things. 💖🌻🌻
I suck at detangling also. I just started getting better at it but its definitely a process. I live in NY and I don't like spending money on braids cause I can't do it neatly myself. I do suck it up and spend the money sometimes but for the entire winter season when the air is cold and dry my hair is in a protective style. My hair isn't as long as yours so I've just been twisting it and wearing a head wrap cause the twists look awful but its FREE. I got some length and hang time now so hopefully by winter it will be long enough to be presentable without the head wrap but if not twists and head wraps it is. Of course I wash and condition and moisturize my hair regularly during this time. When in braids I'm guilty of not washing my hair but I usually only keep the style in for 6 weeks at most 8. And it's not because i think dirt helps it grow. I'm just too lazy. Lol. I do moisturize in between though.
This video just popped on my timeline. Girl you are such a vibe! Personality ✔️, content ✔️, confidence ✔️ and yes, I do walk around in a twist as well! New subbie from Kenya!!!
My daughter keeps her hair in twist and let me tell you her hair growth is 🍌! So I decided to take that challenge for the summer. I'm 2 months in going all the way to September.
I plan to keep my hair in twists and wear a head wrap to cover it for the entire summer. I’ve tried it for 2 weeks so far and loved it, plus all of the attention that I was getting. Mainly from the pale people. They were looking like, who does she think she is? I am so loving it!!!! I wash it every week, moisturize and retwist. I spritz my hair with water a couple of times per week and keep it rocking.
I tried box braids for the first time a few months ago. I didn't keep them a whole two weeks because I was near tears from the pain. 😭 I've NEVER been tender-headed until I went natural. I do want to try some regular weave braids though. I love your videos, especially Bear. 😍☺❤
I’ve watched your videos here and there but I subscribed when I saw three years ago your hair was long as mine now! Clearly you did something right so I’m taking notes
Honestly I feel like stretching your hair with heat or revair if you're against heat helps with retention since when you hair is curly especially tightly curled your hair gets tangled and break. And yes moisture is very important but you can also moisturize your hair while it's blow dried
I completely agree with you. I recently big chopped after transitioning 14 months and I keep my hair in flat twists and I've noticed I loose way less hair versus when I wear a puff.
I had sisterlocs for over 20 years. Did the big chop this month and now rocking a twa. I have been doing finger coils as a protective style. I wear that for a week. A day or 2 before wash day I undo the coils for a different look.
I prefer braids over twists because i find with twists that my hair sheds WAY more than when i style it in braids. Ever since I started washing my hair weekly, doing braids and throwing on some wigs.....my hair density has increased dramatically and its growing rapidly but its the thickness I'm most pleased with. When my hair hits shoulder length after shrinkage I'll start to wear it out more. I still get single strand knots and i just don't stress out about them like i used to, i just take the scissors and cut, done! I have had many years of hair setbacks, this past year has been the most successful out of the 5yrs I've been natural and may it long continue!
Following your tips from your old videos really help me get out of the awkward stage. I'm only 3c/4a but your tips still helped me 💗💞 My go to hairstyle now is flat twist up until a ponytail bun because I then put the twist ends tuck away and it's hot outside like omg. high bunny tails will not work because the sun would burn my hair lol
I'm a week in with starting my locs. One of the reasons I wanted to locs is for low Manipulation. Cuz I was constantly in my hair. I would only wear a protective style for a few days and as soon as it got frizzy. I was doing something else to it. I'm loving the process of locs so far so hopefully it's my thing! Love the video!!!

LaShonda Dunbar Good for you!!👏🏾👏🏾 I just made the same decision and did the exact same thing TODAY!!! I felt a little self conscious but stopped caring. My hair felt nice and aired out. I put a few decorations in the front and kept it moving.
Ms. Und3rst00d Yes!!! I felt a little self conscious but I just push through!
Washing braids lose the whole hairstyle making your hair frizzy
FACTS!!!
I wait until my own hair naturally frizzes up then wash and wet my hair in the braids
oh yes thats what i do
Then throw a wig on and keep it moving🤷🏾♀️🤣
Yes! That's the issue with the whole "wash your hair in protective styles".
I found out about using ACV to cleanse the scalp and imma just do that lol. I've only tried ut for braid extensions though.
Never done it for natural twists.
GIRL 🤣DIRT GROWS YOUR HAIR! LOL IT WAS TRUE. LOL. But your absolutely correct. It's not touching your hair.
😹😹😹
Practice good hygiene. Shampoo your hair.
Thank you 😊 🙏🏽
Tina Marie yea dirt do not grow your hair this is the biggest lie told to the black community. Smh 🤦♀️
ALL SUMMER IM WEARING MY FELICIA BRAIDS
😹😹😹😹
LOL! Chazz, you and Bear just make my day!
I have heard the dirty hair myth, but what you're saying about protective styling makes sense. Good information!
No problem!!!
I'm definitely protective style girl. Flat twists are my go to, but I'll also do twists ( medium or mini) and the occasional low bun.
Yups!!!
✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
I agree with you, low manipulation grows hair. My hair used to break a lot when I used to wash it every week. I now wash my hair once in a month and the breakage has reduced about 90%. This is what works for me.
YESSS!!!
Yea I still haven’t found a solution for those. Ultimately I stopped caring to be honest 😹
Yes that last part is definitely facts!!!!
@@Chazzzisawesome thank you for replying! Can't wait for more videos! You're awesome ^-^
Bear knows more than that! He was just being a lazy sack of fluff but you guys are definitely right 😞
I needed this video. After 20 years of wearing my hair natural, I've gone back and forth with protective styles. I was sticking to mini twist because I wasn't confident enough to rock mini braids like I really wanted to. It's on now.
Loving my natural hair, six years strong. Best decision I could have made. Good info, thanks
I actually love your hair like that and the texture of it . it looks like something an adult would wear. You're gorgeous btw
I was rocking a boy cut as well 😹😹😹
I agree with this 100%.
No problem!!!
Been rocking twists for the passed few months now, and my hair does so much better with them. It's easier to moisturize and seal my ends, plus my buns come out super cute. Now my hair is bra strap length. Woot woot!!! ^_^
WOOTIE WOOT!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Even tho I don’t have the same hairtype at all I listen to these advices because I’d like to grow out my hair in a healthy way
You said it very well. My hair loves twist. Thanks for explaining protective styles. Love the twists on you.
I literally said OMG out loud😂😂 sis this healthy hair growth!!!🙌🙌🙌
😹😹😹😹
Then it’s definitely not in the cards for you to go to a stylist. Don’t worry I’m in the same boat 😹
This is why you learn to do your own hair. Patience plus I am tenderhearted....so I am gentle.
I absolutely love your vibes and advice!! Rocked my fro for 3 weeks recently and it felt AMAZING!!
Thanks you, you gave me the courage to go outside with my two strand twists today. I even threw on a red lip, the confidence was much needed.
I recently learned I was bad at washing my hair. Like my scalp will just have buildup that I thought I was removing (I think it’s buildup when it turns white ) but anyway, I didn’t know that I had to really get in there. It’s all so much to learn so I thank you for this video!
No problem!!!!
Yes you are definitely right on that no two heads are the same!!!!!
Ok I have been doing this protective style for just 6 months now and i tell you girls is what we need for our type 4 hair. Thanks again chazi😍
No problem!!! Thanks for watching!
Your hair has grown so much. If only I were older and had my own money, I would buy all that I could just to make my hair as healthy, and beautiful as yours
Hi I’ve really been having a hard time trying to maintain my hair and I’m only thirteen I just don’t know what works best for me I’ve had a little bit of breakage and I’m trying to grow my hair out again and your videos are really helpful so thank you 😊😊
Just finished doing my twist ...so tired 😓.
😹😹😹
Yesssss. I just subscribed friend lol. I started growing the crown of my hair out 2yrs & 4 months ago. And just learned how to flat twist and currently teaching myself braiding. Protective styles are EVERYTHING
YESSS!!!
Wow.... I just spent 45mins doing twists to take them out 10mins later bc I was afraid of looking like a boy..... thank you ♥️
I appreciate your personality and bear’s interjections 🐻❤️
NO PROBLEM!!! Thank you so much for watching!!!
I had to subscribe just for the argument with the bear. I died 😂😂😂💀💀😂
I've been twisting my hair since November 2018 and my hair has finally been retaining lenght after beeing stuck for years! :)
AYYYEEE!!!
Your energy is contagious! Thankyou!
Ayyyee you will definitely get there!!!
crochet and box braids are the juice. :)
Hell yea!!!!
Thank you, sister, for saying this on your channel. I have been saying for years and it is so nice that I found a kindred spirit on this issue.
No problem lady!!!
When my hair was in locs I learned that my hair grows 3.5 inches a year. That tons of growth!
6 inches is the average
I rock the bye Felicia braids too and my hair is healthy and growing.
YES!!!!
i feel like type 4b 4c hair is meant to wear mostly in protective styles. our hair type gets the most breakage and single strand knots; but when we wear it protected in braids or twists etc.. it flourishes. look at the people that have dred locks, they hair be growing pass they ass! and the reason to that is because there hair is not being manipulated.
True it grows, but a good bit of that is shed here that can't escape as well as it tries to slide out it pains a little bit longer than the hair actually is. Also makes the hair look thicker than it normally would be.
😹😹😹 facts.
You are right girl, less manipulation works for me
I love my two strand twist! You are right you gotta have confidence in whatever you wear!
MY STANDARDS OF BEAUTIFUL HAIR!! TYPE 4 ANYTHING😍😍😍👀
❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥
Lol. That intro! 😍
😹😹😹
You’re so gorgeous and I love your energy. I’ve been on the natural hair journey and lately I’ve finally found a protective style I feel comfortable with rocking out in public. And I get compliments as well and it’s so easy to manage. And I love how it looks when I’m ready to take it out and rock it that way. My last perm was in 2017, April 29th and my hair has cams along way. The sad part is I never needed the perm (I was young my grandmother made that choice.) But anyways my hair is so thick and getting so long and growing so fast. But I love watching videos like this getting tips and learning new things. 💖🌻🌻
I can say that ever since I got twist about a couple months ago it has really helped my hair tremendously
FACTS!
Did you add extensions to it?
The intro with the Teddy bear. 😂😂😂😂
😹😹😹
It takes time to get used to do your hair but you will find it. Just takes practice.
This video just popped on my timeline. Girl you are such a vibe! Personality ✔️, content ✔️, confidence ✔️ and yes, I do walk around in a twist as well! New subbie from Kenya!!!
Awww thank you!!!
This really did work Chazz. ❤️ Ny hair is growing a lot. Thank you . 🙏🏾
Oh my goodness her hair ha grown sooo much, I remember when it was just a cute twa😆
My daughter keeps her hair in twist and let me tell you her hair growth is 🍌! So I decided to take that challenge for the summer. I'm 2 months in going all the way to September.
AYYYEEEEE!!!!!
I'm watching this video while putting my hair in a protective, and you know, I made it to the end. Subscribed.
Awwww yeaaaahhh thank you!!!!
Aye sounds like a plan to me!!!
Sis, I need a skin routine... Or just some recommendations. Your skin looks polished and gorgeous!!
Awwww thank you!!!
I tried box braids for the first time a few months ago. I didn't keep them a whole two weeks because I was near tears from the pain. 😭 I've NEVER been tender-headed until I went natural. I do want to try some regular weave braids though. I love your videos, especially Bear. 😍☺❤
Aww thank and don’t worry you will find it!!!
Mines lasted two days😪😊
I actually had no idea of the length of the video until you said something. You are very interesting and knowledgeable.
I’ve watched your videos here and there but I subscribed when I saw three years ago your hair was long as mine now! Clearly you did something right so I’m taking notes
I needed this yes!!!! 🧡🧡🧡
Happy I could help!!!
Honestly I feel like stretching your hair with heat or revair if you're against heat helps with retention since when you hair is curly especially tightly curled your hair gets tangled and break. And yes moisture is very important but you can also moisturize your hair while it's blow dried
I've tried this method but I can't seem to maintain it, when I sweat It always gets poofy.
@@jazminedawson6745 Same here. I love my hair straightened but one bit of moisture and it's back to an afro
@@nisey7653 yeah so I just stick to twist.
This is deep love this
I completely agree with you. I recently big chopped after transitioning 14 months and I keep my hair in flat twists and I've noticed I loose way less hair versus when I wear a puff.
Hmmmmm!!! That’s interesting?
I had sisterlocs for over 20 years. Did the big chop this month and now rocking a twa. I have been doing finger coils as a protective style. I wear that for a week. A day or 2 before wash day I undo the coils for a different look.
That’s pretty!!!!
Just out of curiosity why didn't you comb them out?
@@akosuabonsu4539 I had mature locs that touched my butt and I had about 400 locs so cutting them up was the easiest thing to do.
Yes braids are banging 🔥🔥🔥🔥
so well thought-out! wonderful perspective!
Following your tips from your old videos really help me get out of the awkward stage. I'm only 3c/4a but your tips still helped me 💗💞
My go to hairstyle now is flat twist up until a ponytail bun because I then put the twist ends tuck away and it's hot outside like omg. high bunny tails will not work because the sun would burn my hair lol
Who could even dislike such truthful and entertaining content? 🤷🏽♀️❤️😘
Aww thank you 😹😹😹🤪
“A bonnet?” 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
😹😹😹
I'm a week in with starting my locs. One of the reasons I wanted to locs is for low Manipulation. Cuz I was constantly in my hair. I would only wear a protective style for a few days and as soon as it got frizzy. I was doing something else to it. I'm loving the process of locs so far so hopefully it's my thing! Love the video!!!
I absolutely love you and your videos! So real and educational.
