Who remembers… QEMM386

- I was talking to a fellow retro enthusiast who runs (I believe) the Calgary Retro Tech group about a video regarding memory management from @TimberwolfK. Great video btw, go watch it (link below). Also, on a side note, the Calgary Retro Tech acronym is CRT... how cool is that?
Okay enough sidebars, let me get to the point of this video. Joe mentioned config.sys menus were great for memory management boot types. I gave an example of a boot menu including QEMM as an option. Joe noted, "Whoa, I haven't seen that name in a while." So I said, hold your butts because I have something wild to show you.
Here's the blast from the past - I'm wondering how many of you have seen it, and I should do a longer video someday to explore the setup more. But, QEMM386 was a memory manager made by Quarterdeck software. Quarterdeck then created Desqview, a text dos-based multitasking environment. Then, because companies were still hanging onto old Unix mainframes, they created Desqview/X. The great thing about DesqView/X is that it was an X/Windows server on DOS. In fact, xeyes and other Un*x programs were built for it!

Timberwolf's video: • What were XMS, EMS and...
Oh man QEMM and Desqview do those bring back memories. When I got my first 386 with a whopping 4 megs of memory and no clue how to use it. QRAM was first then QEMM just blew it all open. I remember I think it was LINKS when I first saw a game that used and needed it. And just that was a crazy thing to see the 3D world around you being drawn.
And Desqview was such a game changer. The idea running all kinds of DOS programs in the background was crazy on my 386. And it was a must back in the BBS downloading days. When you’d have to have your modem going for maybe hours if not days to get stuff. Having Z-Modem chugging in the background was a must while you still do all your other work - i.e. school work - was crazy. Not to mention when I discovered online how to configure Desqview to work with dual screens was jaw dropping back in 1988. I ran a Desqview dual screen setup as long as I could until I think it was DirectX 1.5 or something introduced duals screens to Windows. Needless to say when that mono screen was retired that Z-Modem progress bar was burned into that screen
Awesome to see DESQview/X. The window manager looks similar to mwm (Motif Window Manager) although the controls are a bit different.
This is an amazing trip down memory lane for me.
As a one-time support person, I had to deal with a lot of this on hundreds of machines, as well as people wanting to be "different" and making changes that you wouldn't expect or even guess at.
Fun times!
QEMM and DesqView were something I ... borrowed ... off of a bulletin board once. So interesting on my 386!
Finally, the NABU King returns!!!🎉
I never seen this before,
Welcome back DJ
I spent so much time customising different boot menus for EMS, XMS and conventional memory. Most of the memories of the memory information are now lost memories.
Thanks for the mention - some fascinating stuff there, love the X on top of DOS!
man, QEMM made my life so much easier.
Looks like good old FVWM to me. Everyone ran that window manager on Linux and BSD back in the day. It was the most popular open source window manager in the early days and had a similar look as Motif.
Welcome back. I didn't know Tetris is one of your favorite games! Cool.
X didn't need a window manager, but you needed one to move windows around and resize them manually. The window manager looked like it could have been TWM. That was a very common default window manager that was typically installed with X.
Desqview/X and QEMM386 is still superior to anything Microsoft has ever made, even to this day.
The Compaq Armada 15XX series usually use the Chips and Techs 68554 PCI with 2MB of ram, non-3d.
Funny. I used to run a multiline BBS in the 90's in desqview as well.
Yep, and aftermarket memory managers before dose built it in .. stealth memory use etc..
Great to see you posting!
Can you tell us the specific model Compaq you picked up? Looks like a good setup with the sound card.
And don't think I missed seeing GeoWorks 2.0 on there... ;) - Edited to say subscribed for more interesting content, and hopefully, a walkthrough of PC-GEOS!

Sweet, I had an Uncle with a PS2 that he would Run DeskX alongside OS2 & Win 3.11wfw lol
All Controlling his Epic Radio Shack PC controlled Power Distribution Control center for his house.
Pretty D0pe for the early 90s
AST Research ran a promotion where they included Desqview with their RAMPage memory boards for the IBM AT. The AST rep for Canada, Jim Courtney, hooked me up with the combo and it was amazing!
Oh yeah, and TSRs.
I was there gandalf, 3,000 years ago.
I used desqview back in the day! It was super useful and I think it had better multitasking than even Windows 95 did. Never used dvx though, that’s neat!
Bryan Lunduke recently published an article about Deskview/x.
Oh boy, 'XEyes' is to 'XWindows' what 'Solitaire' was to 'Microsoft Windows' :-)
The only remaining question would then be: What is "XWindows"? 😆
I just gave away a boxed copy of that this year! I used Desqview to run a 2 line board myself.
I love deskview I ran a bbs with 2 numbers and then a Linux system running x desktop on deskview
I never played with DVX, but DV, yeah, that was FUN back in the day. I have a 486 I just might bring it up on when 'needed', or, a P3-1Ghz.
Have you ever used QRAM with EMS Memory on a Tandy 1000 TL?
Please do a video of GEM Desktop too!
Also DeskView/X :).
Connect the laptop to a modern Linux PC using X Window System :D
DOS INT21?
8192 KB RAM... is... 81MB??
LGR reviews casting couch
that is 80mb of ram dude
where is the voice, narration? what you're doing? it's honestly difficult to follow along if it's completely silent. If you can't or don't want to speak use a TTS system please.
The audio is fine, must be a problem on your end.
