From all of Paul's videos, I've come to the conclusion that every caliber has it's advantages and disadvantages. It's almost like there is some form of tradeoff that people must make.

there really aren't a lot of free, in depth industry references in the gun world. Paul does a LOT to fill that niche from a practical perspective so i'm inclined to believe.
I do love my .40 cal. I always love this guy because he's one of the only one that isn't biased. Some of these guys actually label 40 as the "worst round" you can buy. Outrageous and laughable.
I love my .40 too!!! I also love10mm and 9x25 Dillion!! I’m sure the .357 is awesome as well but do not have hands on experience with that caliber. .40 however is definitely a great round for me!!! Best wishes!!!
I have never heard the 40 S&W was the worst round. I've only heard how 9mm is the best because of quicker target acquisition on follow on shots and the modern bullet weights and design make the ballistics nearly parallel. Though, since they make the same bullet designs for the 40, 45 and 357sig...so I am not sure how they can say that. Bottom line is that 380 is not recommended due to very little development of that particular round and it's 9mm short. The 40 is a great caliber as are 10mm, 45, 357sig and 9mm. I can only ponder if those naysayers about the 40 think poorly of the round because you do not have any +p rounds possible due to the pressures of the 40 are already very high.
@@robertmosher7418 gotta consider that the entire fbi and many other agencies made the switch to 40, only to later switch back. When the entirety of such a large agency can't reliably train on a caliber, it's safe to say at the very least that it's not the best one out there?
@@beargillium2369 except that they were using S&W model 36 five shot snub nosed 38 spec when they got into that firefight in Miami. They then developed the 10mn because they were too good to use the 9mm or 45 and felt they needed to make a statement to bad guys. Once the issued all their agents 10mm they found it difficult to control and that though it would penetrate through car doors like they wanted, it also suffered from over penetration and the pistols were not all that fun to shoot...to the effect that agents complained of minor injuries and most, other than their HRT unit, disliked it. So S&W went back to the drawing board and developed the 10mm short or the 40 S&W. Because, once again, they refused to switch to a 9mm or 45. Once they issued the 40 they kept it for years (which had almost every police agency switch to the 40 cal) until the 357 Sig came out and they, like hundreds of police departments switched to the newest, shiniest caliber. They didn't carry that long and decided to go, finally, to the 9mm...but not because the last two were deficient, rather because they had an easier time keeping their Sigs on target, modern bullet development increased the 9mm terminal ballistics and they could squeeze 17 rounds into the gun. Since they don't carry but two magazines and one is the spare, unless they are serving a high risk warrant (which, other than their local SRT or national HRT, they never do without a taskforce with LLEO and US Marshals) they felt they needed the extra 5 rounds in each magazine. I will give them this caveat about not going straight to the 9mm...back when they were going through this whole process no 9mm had a capacity over 9 or 10 rounds. Most were at 8 still as a slim profile and lightweight pistol were on vogue. It wasn't until the midway point of the 10mm issue that Glock released the G17 and that caused everyone to develop a 15+ magazine. The FBI switching to the 9mm caused every other police department, who hadn't already, to also return to the 9mm So, that's sorta, kinda, the story as told to me by my close friend who is retired FBI and former HRT operator.

Once when I was a policeman here I took a guy to the hospital with two .380 shots in his head, both near each other, right above his ear. He was OK, conscious. Just lost lots of blood. Later the nurse told me the projectiles just got stuck in his skull and didn't reach the brain. Anecdotal, of course.... But still.
Reading many of the below comments, I must say Paul is the real deal, and that is not a slight to any other RL gun guy or RUclips gun channel. Paul has 20 years military, the CIB, tons of marksman and higher badges and real world experience of a gunfight with another civilian, which Paul won. He is super knowledgeable and proficient. I like the guy a lot and i take his presentations as straight forward, no BS representations. Been a gun owner for 45+ years, and while being no way an expert, I know what i know, and Harrell is, as stated, the real deal. Thanks for another outstanding presentation, Sir. toddy2519 the funny thing is that availability is actually better now than it was, at least compared to 9mm and other more common cartridges. I always find a box or two locally and online. People ignored it for its price, now it’s one of the only rounds you can get.

I respect Paul Harrrell’s ability to stick to the point without adding additional and unrelated narrative. His presentation was based entirely on comparison/contrast. I noted he added nothing tangential; i.e., unrelated to the topic. Many could learn much from his well thought out presentation smile and his thorough focus on the relevant tasks at hand. Such is the skill of a consummate professional. I do not understand the need for your irrelevant non sequitur. Neither your allegations of another’s alleged hygiene, nor your lack of writing skills have anything to do with the merits or deficiencies of either the .357 SIG or the .40 S&W. Those with bad hygiene can easily take relatively short daily showers; those with have poor writing skills would be best served by repeating grades six through twelve. I bought a Glock 33 this summer. Subcompact 357 SIG, shooting mainly 125 grain flat nose, 59 cents per round. (Edit July 2023, now 46 cents per round.) Love the Sig, I find complaints about recoil greatly exaggerated. However, tough to get ammo and it's expensive. I can get a 40 S&W precision barrel around $200 including tax and shipping. 40 S&W 165 grain jhp same brand as the 357 SIG, is 32 cents. Pays for the barrel in under 700 rounds. My question is for 40 cal shooters - in a subcompact like this, am I giving much away carrying 40 cal jhp? Would you be happy with the trade-off? What would be the drawbacks if I carried in 40 sometimes on a subcompact? Edit July 2023: I bought a SIG P229 and have 40 and 357 SIG barrels. Both shoot great and I'm very trustful if either with normal ammo, usually flat nose and 165/125 grain. IMO, oddball ammo tends to be highly unpredictable and I don't see the point in these calibers. Standard ammo will take down anything as well or better than hyper(expensive)ammo.
@@keithgraham9547 In a short barrel there's probably not much in it. Maybe a slight advantage to 357 in that you're taking the guesswork out of your HP expansion, they're definitely going fast enough. That said remember that your barrel doesn't need to be flush, nothing stopping you throwing a G23 barrel in there. I reload so it's all the same to me, a primer is a primer. Haven't really shot anything but 357 SIG, 10mm, and 45 Super for the last couple of years.
@@robertg8565 You'll get 1400 out of a 125gr no bother. You start hitting diminishing returns with lighter bullets very quickly, you can push a 115gr at 1600, 90gr at around 1700 - problem is JHP just explodes on contact, doesn't penetrate for shit. It really is very heavily optimised for a "sensible magnum" 125gr load.
Great info! The .357 Sig has been my favorite for a few years now. Love that caliber! Not to mention, with a necked cartridge, the chance of a failure to feed is much less!

@Ethan Mac I believe the video was just to differentiate between the two calibers. FPC is definitely a decision that you have to make when going with a certain caliber. I have all three, 9, 40 and .357 Sig. Honestly, I wouldn't want to get shot with any of them.
@Ethan Mac For most people it is. For typical self defense, there is not much difference in terminal ballistics between 9, 40 and 45. The most notable difference is penetration which is the most important factor of a bullet after accuracy. 40 would probably win that but 9 and 45 both qualify in that regard. And 9 gives you the most chances to hit someone and make more holes. Afterall, blood loss is what kills them if the round doesnt hit the brain, spine or something to instantly kill or incapacitate them.

.40 is actually more powerful. When you get the hottest factory ammo for both, the 135 gr Underwood .40 nosler, and 124 gr Underwood .357 sig nosler, the .40 reigns supreme. So .357 sig can not claim to be more powerful, no matter how many big companies load .40 and 10mm way under saami spec and load .357 sig pretty close. The 135 gr and 155 gr underwoods are rated from a 3.4” barrel too, AZ AIRGUNNER just proved that with two recent videos of .40 vs .357 sig. He got exactly 589 ft lbs from the 3.4” barrel with the underwood 135 gr .40 nosler. The .357 sig nosler from them had 540 ft lbs. from the 3.4” From a 4.9” barrel the .40 had 675 ft lbs. The .357 sig had 640 ft lbs from a 4.5”. Gun Sam tested the .40 from a 4” and it got 610 ft lbs. Needless to say I picked up a fex boxes. It’s in saami spec and it shoots great from my Glock 23, not uncomfortable at all.
I like the fact that these videos start so many conversations and information exchanges. No matter what Paul demos the information and lets you make the choice or do more research. I love all the talk and "my round is better than yours" when all the mid-range rounds are within spitting distance of each other. The more I watch the more I learn you can negate the differences with the right ammo choice. Have fun and choose the round you want to brag about.
Yeah, it’s futile argument. Especially when you get to weapons that people will actually carry on them, being compliant in carrying. Even my Baby Glock is too big at times and I reach for a 380 or 38. And folks that laugh at me for carrying such an “inferior” caliber never seem to have their full size pistols on them at the time either.

Since .357 Sig is expensive and hard to find my .40 will do just fine. After shooting a lot of .40 ammo the Hornady Critical Defense in 165 grain is a nasty one.
@@spaceshuttledoorgunner1154 The ONLY thing I like about .357 Sig is its reliability because of the shape of the case. It is too loud, too expensive and too difficult to find. Switched the barrel to a .40 and haven't looked back since. I think this caliber will be very hard to find in the future. The prices are ridiculous. While a box of .45 ACP by Winchester sold for $24, the .357 Sig ammo by the same brand cost $10 more!
That is maybe the best choice, 500ftlbs, they expand to a massive 7 tenths or better , they dont clog and jacket separation is not a issue, penetration in gel is perfect.I like Dots too.

They're extreme penatrator .357 Sig has a muzzle velocity of 2100fps with 68gr and their 115gr at 1500 fps. Absolute nasty rounds. The 68gr has 700lb/ft of muzzle energy and can defeat all level ll and most basic level lll. Only need Glock to make a FN 5.7 with their 19 slim slide and their 17 frame like the 19x and underwood ammo to make their extremely hot ammo with an AP tungsten core. Just imagine having 32 rounds of that ammo no extended clip needed shooting armor piercing bullet at 2900 fps. FNs stock green tips are already hitting 2600-2700fps and I know under wood ammo could at 200 fps maybe even 300. That pistol with a red dot would have some amazing reach, no drop and could easily beat level lll a. Glock do it!
@@followthegrow108 I made a 357 sig rifle out of glock 23, got 16 inch 357 sig barrel and a glock pistol brace with rails for flash light and optics, Shooting the 65 grain underwood 357 sig out of the 16 inch getting about 3000 fps. You can snipe things out to 200 + yards with an optic.

Woods carry the G32, home defense carry with the G30 has been the method to my madness for years. I can reload for both and shoot both quite well. If there was a manufacture that produced a 1911 in 357 Sig (that isn't a jam-o-matic) there would be one next the G32 in the gun safe. 40 S&W is no slouch by no means and is part of my carry options. Been watching your videos over the Chirstmas break. Very interesting, entertaining, and I'm learning a lot. One of my EDC is a Glock 33 .357 sig. I also purchased a 40 barrel. Love the versatility. Plus, if shot goes down hill, I can carry one gun and have two options for ammo.
I still can't believe that after all of these years, .357sig hasn't became a mainstream cartridge. I really wish it would have taken off. But, I guess I'll continue to wait and see. Because as of right now, it's too expensive. I think it's the best carry option available. It's just very impressive, in any type of test that you wanna throw at it.

@Crown Commando Right now at my Cabela's 357 Sig is $2 cheaper than 9MM for 50 rounds, and actually was the only handgun ammo they had on the shelf. At Sportsman's Warehouse 357 Sig hollow points are $10 cheaper for the 25 round boxes.

I actually had a clerk legitimately make fun of me once for carrying .357SIG. He said I needed a 'man's gun' like .357MAG. He had a snubby .38Spl on, so I just rolled my eyes and did my thing. I just don't get the resistance to .357SIG. It's an overall great cartridge for more experienced shooters to handle. Too bad it's not more popular since it would bring the price down a bit.

Clifford C I have a glock 32 in 357 and love it. The 357 is a great round. Recoil is in my opinion about the same as a 40. Maybe a little less. Either caliber you choose you may want to look into underwood ammo. They have great prices for the products they produce
Yeah! They do make some good stuff I picked up some of their Xtreme penetrator rounds haven't done any testing on them yet but from the reviews they seem pretty damn legit
a very important feature of the .357 sig round most overlook is that when the round feeds there's little if any contact with the feed ramp- you're shoving a 9mm projectile into a .40 size chamber--- when you lock the slide back on a loaded mag- look at where the projectile is pointed- into the center of the chamber....whereas 9mm, .40 , .45- all go up the feed ramp...i've been shooting mine for years and have yet to get one ftf/fte....

I enjoyed all the different items you use for targets, gave me ideas for my friends and myself. I like all calibers and like the 357 sig toward the top, carry a 33.
It's a 10mm auto case necked down and slightly shortened. If you were to neck down a 40sw case to .355, you would obtain a shorter case than the original one, while on the contrary the .357sig it's actually slightly longer than a 40sw is. Plus, the 10mm auto and 357sig cases are slightly stronger than the 40sw.
This is a good video Paul. As someone who carries 357 Sig: I have my own experiences, the 357 Sig owners I've spoken to when I worked at a gun range (take with a grain of salt of course), and the data I've seen. Let me explain the pros and cons to people who may find pages of ballistics data to be a bit overwhelming. Pros: 357 Sig is very cost effective firearm wise. You can buy a police trade in .40 S&W pistol for cheap, swap out the barrel, and have your gun. (I did that with my P226). Additionally, it's much easier to train yourself to go between 9mm and 357 Sig than it is to go between 9mm and .40 S&W. The increased velocity of the 357 Sig helps the hollow points more reliably expand and makes it a much more flat shooting caliber than 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. 357 Sig is also standard issue caliber for highway patrols in most states and Secret Service, so if you carry the same ammo as they do (usually Speer Gold Dot) it will be looked at with a less jaundice eye in court. Cons: Ammo cost itself is going to be a bit higher and you usually have to order online to get any of the premium hyperammunition. Because the caliber is necked down, it has a much higher PSI. What this means is if you convert a .40 S&W over you want a reputable make that's going to live up to SAAMI specs (Glock, Sig, CZ, etc). Because the 357 Sig is flying at a much higher velocity, which pistol calibers aren't really made for, you have to be more selective in your ammo choice. IME and from the data I've seen, that's pretty much only going to be 125gr weight projectiles. Anything under that tends to break apart or otherwise have issues with penetration. (The projectile breaking apart is very good for a rifle caliber, mind you. Not pistol calibers though.) So, is 357 Sig the right choice for you? I would honestly recommend it for just a few circumstances. First and foremost: If you spend a lot of time in your car. I used to deliver pizzas so shooting through auto glass would be a concern for me. 357 Sig goes in a straight line through it. Secondly, if you live in a very cold area where people are constantly wearing more and heavier clothing, especially during winter time, the 357 Sig's velocity can be very helpful for defeating that. You can also conceal a bigger 357 Sig pistol more easily. Lastly, you work in some type of private security or escort where you have a VIP that must be escorted from vehicles and through buildings. Generally speaking though, 9mm is the best caliber for new shooters. There's a 9mm handgun out there for anyone, everyone can handle a 9mm, and you can find ammo everywhere. (Ain't called wonder 9 for nothing.)
I agree! My friend and I bought Sig 239's. I bought mine 1 year ahead of his. Mine was a 9 mm his a Sig .357. My 239 9mm had a stamped slide his a CNC for the .357. We got together to test the difference. The .357 was far superior to my 9 mm. Wish I would have waited to get The. 357 Sig! Sold my 239 9mm. I got the XDS sub compact in 9mm sold it too.. Then bought the Lc9s 9mm pro wish it came out in the .357 Sig Still remember the 239 in .357. Wow what a gun! Shawn
@Jonathan Anatrella That's some good information there, my brother. I'm doing research at the moment, looking for a firearm and caliber for police academy which I'm hoping to start in a few months. The caliber options were basically anything between 9mm and .45 ACP. I wanted something that would be an effective firearm with a little more power than the 9mm but wasn't something like the .45 as I already have a .45 pistol that I'm not going to be using as it isn't from a company authorized to be used by the police in my area (the company is CZ). I remember seeing the .357 Sig years ago but didn't really know much about it. Looking at what Paul and yourself have mentioned, I'm thinking the the Glock 31 or 32 chambered in .357 Sig is going to be the way I go. I'm a larger person, not fat large, so I can handle the calibers that are snappier like the .40 S&W, .357 Sig, 10mm, and so on with relative ease. So thank you for this info. Very useful. Much appreciated.

From all of Paul's videos, I've come to the conclusion that every caliber has it's advantages and disadvantages. It's almost like there is some form of tradeoff that people must make.

I do love my .40 cal. I always love this guy because he's one of the only one that isn't biased. Some of these guys actually label 40 as the "worst round" you can buy. Outrageous and laughable.

I have never heard the 40 S&W was the worst round. I've only heard how 9mm is the best because of quicker target acquisition on follow on shots and the modern bullet weights and design make the ballistics nearly parallel.
Though, since they make the same bullet designs for the 40, 45 and 357sig...so I am not sure how they can say that.
Bottom line is that 380 is not recommended due to very little development of that particular round and it's 9mm short.
The 40 is a great caliber as are 10mm, 45, 357sig and 9mm.
I can only ponder if those naysayers about the 40 think poorly of the round because you do not have any +p rounds possible due to the pressures of the 40 are already very high.
@@robertmosher7418 gotta consider that the entire fbi and many other agencies made the switch to 40, only to later switch back. When the entirety of such a large agency can't reliably train on a caliber, it's safe to say at the very least that it's not the best one out there?
@@beargillium2369 except that they were using S&W model 36 five shot snub nosed 38 spec when they got into that firefight in Miami.
They then developed the 10mn because they were too good to use the 9mm or 45 and felt they needed to make a statement to bad guys. Once the issued all their agents 10mm they found it difficult to control and that though it would penetrate through car doors like they wanted, it also suffered from over penetration and the pistols were not all that fun to shoot...to the effect that agents complained of minor injuries and most, other than their HRT unit, disliked it. So S&W went back to the drawing board and developed the 10mm short or the 40 S&W. Because, once again, they refused to switch to a 9mm or 45.
Once they issued the 40 they kept it for years (which had almost every police agency switch to the 40 cal) until the 357 Sig came out and they, like hundreds of police departments switched to the newest, shiniest caliber. They didn't carry that long and decided to go, finally, to the 9mm...but not because the last two were deficient, rather because they had an easier time keeping their Sigs on target, modern bullet development increased the 9mm terminal ballistics and they could squeeze 17 rounds into the gun. Since they don't carry but two magazines and one is the spare, unless they are serving a high risk warrant (which, other than their local SRT or national HRT, they never do without a taskforce with LLEO and US Marshals) they felt they needed the extra 5 rounds in each magazine.
I will give them this caveat about not going straight to the 9mm...back when they were going through this whole process no 9mm had a capacity over 9 or 10 rounds. Most were at 8 still as a slim profile and lightweight pistol were on vogue. It wasn't until the midway point of the 10mm issue that Glock released the G17 and that caused everyone to develop a 15+ magazine. The FBI switching to the 9mm caused every other police department, who hadn't already, to also return to the 9mm
So, that's sorta, kinda, the story as told to me by my close friend who is retired FBI and former HRT operator.

Once when I was a policeman here I took a guy to the hospital with two .380 shots in his head, both near each other, right above his ear. He was OK, conscious. Just lost lots of blood. Later the nurse told me the projectiles just got stuck in his skull and didn't reach the brain.

Reading many of the below comments, I must say Paul is the real deal, and that is not a slight to any other RL gun guy or RUclips gun channel. Paul has 20 years military, the CIB, tons of marksman and higher badges and real world experience of a gunfight with another civilian, which Paul won. He is super knowledgeable and proficient. I like the guy a lot and i take his presentations as straight forward, no BS representations. Been a gun owner for 45+ years, and while being no way an expert, I know what i know, and Harrell is, as stated, the real deal. Thanks for another outstanding presentation, Sir. BTW, big .357 Sig fan...it's my EDC.
The only issue with .357 SIG is price and availability. I see no other realistic issue with the cartridge.

Noticed the 40 S&W had less felt recoil muzzle rise than the 357 sig. At the range, 357 sig is much louder than 40
I bought a Glock 33 this summer. Subcompact 357 SIG, shooting mainly 125 grain flat nose, 59 cents per round. (Edit July 2023, now 46 cents per round.)
Love the Sig, I find complaints about recoil greatly exaggerated.
However, tough to get ammo and it's expensive. I can get a 40 S&W precision barrel around $200 including tax and shipping.
40 S&W 165 grain jhp same brand as the 357 SIG, is 32 cents. Pays for the barrel in under 700 rounds.
My question is for 40 cal shooters - in a subcompact like this, am I giving much away carrying 40 cal jhp? Would you be happy with the trade-off? What would be the drawbacks if I carried in 40 sometimes on a subcompact?
Edit July 2023: I bought a SIG P229 and have 40 and 357 SIG barrels. Both shoot great and I'm very trustful if either with normal ammo, usually flat nose and 165/125 grain.
IMO, oddball ammo tends to be highly unpredictable and I don't see the point in these calibers. Standard ammo will take down anything as well or better than hyper(expensive)ammo.
@@keithgraham9547 In a short barrel there's probably not much in it. Maybe a slight advantage to 357 in that you're taking the guesswork out of your HP expansion, they're definitely going fast enough. That said remember that your barrel doesn't need to be flush, nothing stopping you throwing a G23 barrel in there.
I reload so it's all the same to me, a primer is a primer. Haven't really shot anything but 357 SIG, 10mm, and 45 Super for the last couple of years.
@@robertg8565 You'll get 1400 out of a 125gr no bother. You start hitting diminishing returns with lighter bullets very quickly, you can push a 115gr at 1600, 90gr at around 1700 - problem is JHP just explodes on contact, doesn't penetrate for shit. It really is very heavily optimised for a "sensible magnum" 125gr load.

I'm surprised it didn't penetrate, mainly because he was able to penetrate with a 9mm PCC, which was putting out relatively same velocity and mass.

@Ethan Mac I believe the video was just to differentiate between the two calibers. FPC is definitely a decision that you have to make when going with a certain caliber. I have all three, 9, 40 and .357 Sig. Honestly, I wouldn't want to get shot with any of them.

@Ethan Mac For most people it is. For typical self defense, there is not much difference in terminal ballistics between 9, 40 and 45. The most notable difference is penetration which is the most important factor of a bullet after accuracy. 40 would probably win that but 9 and 45 both qualify in that regard. And 9 gives you the most chances to hit someone and make more holes. Afterall, blood loss is what kills them if the round doesnt hit the brain, spine or something to instantly kill or incapacitate them.
Paul has the best ballistics vids online. To the point. Concise. No drama, and not overdone.

So .357 sig can not claim to be more powerful, no matter how many big companies load .40 and 10mm way under saami spec and load .357 sig pretty close.
The 135 gr and 155 gr underwoods are rated from a 3.4” barrel too, AZ AIRGUNNER just proved that with two recent videos of .40 vs .357 sig. He got exactly 589 ft lbs from the 3.4” barrel with the underwood 135 gr .40 nosler. The .357 sig nosler from them had 540 ft lbs. from the 3.4”
From a 4.9” barrel the .40 had 675 ft lbs. The .357 sig had 640 ft lbs from a 4.5”. Gun Sam tested the .40 from a 4” and it got 610 ft lbs. Needless to say I picked up a fex boxes. It’s in saami spec and it shoots great from my Glock 23, not uncomfortable at all.
I like the fact that these videos start so many conversations and information exchanges. No matter what Paul demos the information and lets you make the choice or do more research.
I love all the talk and "my round is better than yours" when all the mid-range rounds are within spitting distance of each other. The more I watch the more I learn you can negate the differences with the right ammo choice. Have fun and choose the round you want to brag about.

Yeah, it’s futile argument. Especially when you get to weapons that people will actually carry on them, being compliant in carrying. Even my Baby Glock is too big at times and I reach for a 380 or 38. And folks that laugh at me for carrying such an “inferior” caliber never seem to have their full size pistols on them at the time either.

Since .357 Sig is expensive and hard to find my .40 will do just fine. After shooting a lot of .40 ammo the Hornady Critical Defense in 165 grain is a nasty one.
No one is saying your .40 is bad. But... if you had selected a .357sig, it would have been better :)
@@spaceshuttledoorgunner1154 The ONLY thing I like about .357 Sig is its reliability because of the shape of the case. It is too loud, too expensive and too difficult to find. Switched the barrel to a .40 and haven't looked back since. I think this caliber will be very hard to find in the future. The prices are ridiculous. While a box of .45 ACP by Winchester sold for $24, the .357 Sig ammo by the same brand cost $10 more!

That is maybe the best choice, 500ftlbs, they expand to a massive 7 tenths or better , they dont clog and jacket separation is not a issue, penetration in gel is perfect.I like Dots too.

I bought my Sig Sauer P229 .40 because I can also shoot .357 Sig with just a barrel change. Yes, .357 Sig ammo is about 35 to 40 % more costly, but the effectiveness of the stopping power is worth every penny more to me. My P229 is my concealed carry weapon, replacing my Springfield Armory sub compact .45.

Compared to a 125gr .357 Magnum load, sure.

They're extreme penatrator .357 Sig has a muzzle velocity of 2100fps with 68gr and their 115gr at 1500 fps. Absolute nasty rounds. The 68gr has 700lb/ft of muzzle energy and can defeat all level ll and most basic level lll. Only need Glock to make a FN 5.7 with their 19 slim slide and their 17 frame like the 19x and underwood ammo to make their extremely hot ammo with an AP tungsten core. Just imagine having 32 rounds of that ammo no extended clip needed shooting armor piercing bullet at 2900 fps. FNs stock green tips are already hitting 2600-2700fps and I know under wood ammo could at 200 fps maybe even 300. That pistol with a red dot would have some amazing reach, no drop and could easily beat level lll a. Glock do it!
@@followthegrow108 I made a 357 sig rifle out of glock 23, got 16 inch 357 sig barrel and a glock pistol brace with rails for flash light and optics, Shooting the 65 grain underwood 357 sig out of the 16 inch getting about 3000 fps. You can snipe things out to 200 + yards with an optic.

Woods carry the G32, home defense carry with the G30 has been the method to my madness for years. I can reload for both and shoot both quite well. If there was a manufacture that produced a 1911 in 357 Sig (that isn't a jam-o-matic) there would be one next the G32 in the gun safe. 40 S&W is no slouch by no means and is part of my carry options. Been watching your videos over the Chirstmas break. Very interesting, entertaining, and I'm learning a lot. One of my EDC is a Glock 33 .357 sig. I also purchased a 40 barrel. Love the versatility. Plus, if shot goes down hill, I can carry one gun and have two options for ammo.
I still can't believe that after all of these years, .357sig hasn't became a mainstream cartridge. I really wish it would have taken off. But, I guess I'll continue to wait and see. Because as of right now, it's too expensive. I think it's the best carry option available. It's just very impressive, in any type of test that you wanna throw at it.

@Crown Commando Right now at my Cabela's 357 Sig is $2 cheaper than 9MM for 50 rounds, and actually was the only handgun ammo they had on the shelf. At Sportsman's Warehouse 357 Sig hollow points are $10 cheaper for the 25 round boxes.
@Crown Commando Nice, I got the Sig Sauer brand last week when I was there FMJ 50 box was $16. $18 for their HP box. That is the cheapest I've ever seen it. I'm going to be ordering a can from Georgia Arms.
I actually had a clerk legitimately make fun of me once for carrying .357SIG. He said I needed a 'man's gun' like .357MAG. He had a snubby .38Spl on, so I just rolled my eyes and did my thing. I just don't get the resistance to .357SIG. It's an overall great cartridge for more experienced shooters to handle. Too bad it's not more popular since it would bring the price down a bit.

Clifford C I have a glock 32 in 357 and love it. The 357 is a great round. Recoil is in my opinion about the same as a 40. Maybe a little less. Either caliber you choose you may want to look into underwood ammo. They have great prices for the products they produce
Yeah! They do make some good stuff I picked up some of their Xtreme penetrator rounds haven't done any testing on them yet but from the reviews they seem pretty damn legit

a very important feature of the .357 sig round most overlook is that when the round feeds there's little if any contact with the feed ramp- you're shoving a 9mm projectile into a .40 size chamber--- when you lock the slide back on a loaded mag- look at where the projectile is pointed- into the center of the chamber....whereas 9mm, .40 , .45- all go up the feed ramp...i've been shooting mine for years and have yet to get one ftf/fte....

I enjoyed all the different items you use for targets, gave me ideas for my friends and myself. I like all calibers and like the 357 sig toward the top, carry a 33.
The 357 SIG is just a 9mm bullet in a necked down .40S&W case, so you can think of it as a 9mm magnum.
I think they would have sold a lot more guns in 9mm magnum than .357 SIG. Would have been easier to relate too.

It's a 10mm auto case necked down and slightly shortened.
If you were to neck down a 40sw case to .355, you would obtain a shorter case than the original one, while on the contrary the .357sig it's actually slightly longer than a 40sw is.
Plus, the 10mm auto and 357sig cases are slightly stronger than the 40sw.

This is a good video Paul. As someone who carries 357 Sig: I have my own experiences, the 357 Sig owners I've spoken to when I worked at a gun range (take with a grain of salt of course), and the data I've seen. Let me explain the pros and cons to people who may find pages of ballistics data to be a bit overwhelming.
Pros: 357 Sig is very cost effective firearm wise. You can buy a police trade in .40 S&W pistol for cheap, swap out the barrel, and have your gun. (I did that with my P226). Additionally, it's much easier to train yourself to go between 9mm and 357 Sig than it is to go between 9mm and .40 S&W. The increased velocity of the 357 Sig helps the hollow points more reliably expand and makes it a much more flat shooting caliber than 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. 357 Sig is also standard issue caliber for highway patrols in most states and Secret Service, so if you carry the same ammo as they do (usually Speer Gold Dot) it will be looked at with a less jaundice eye in court.
Cons: Ammo cost itself is going to be a bit higher and you usually have to order online to get any of the premium hyperammunition. Because the caliber is necked down, it has a much higher PSI. What this means is if you convert a .40 S&W over you want a reputable make that's going to live up to SAAMI specs (Glock, Sig, CZ, etc). Because the 357 Sig is flying at a much higher velocity, which pistol calibers aren't really made for, you have to be more selective in your ammo choice. IME and from the data I've seen, that's pretty much only going to be 125gr weight projectiles. Anything under that tends to break apart or otherwise have issues with penetration. (The projectile breaking apart is very good for a rifle caliber, mind you. Not pistol calibers though.)
So, is 357 Sig the right choice for you? I would honestly recommend it for just a few circumstances. First and foremost: If you spend a lot of time in your car. I used to deliver pizzas so shooting through auto glass would be a concern for me. 357 Sig goes in a straight line through it. Secondly, if you live in a very cold area where people are constantly wearing more and heavier clothing, especially during winter time, the 357 Sig's velocity can be very helpful for defeating that. You can also conceal a bigger 357 Sig pistol more easily. Lastly, you work in some type of private security or escort where you have a VIP that must be escorted from vehicles and through buildings. Generally speaking though, 9mm is the best caliber for new shooters. There's a 9mm handgun out there for anyone, everyone can handle a 9mm, and you can find ammo everywhere. (Ain't called wonder 9 for nothing.)
I agree! My friend and I bought Sig 239's. I bought mine 1 year ahead of his. Mine was a 9 mm his a Sig .357. My 239 9mm had a stamped slide his a CNC for the .357. We got together to test the difference. The .357 was far superior to my 9 mm. Wish I would have waited to get The. 357 Sig! Sold my 239 9mm. I got the XDS sub compact in 9mm sold it too.. Then bought the Lc9s 9mm pro wish it came out in the .357 Sig Still remember the 239 in .357. Wow what a gun! Shawn
@Jonathan Anatrella That's some good information there, my brother. I'm doing research at the moment, looking for a firearm and caliber for police academy which I'm hoping to start in a few months. The caliber options were basically anything between 9mm and .45 ACP. I wanted something that would be an effective firearm with a little more power than the 9mm but wasn't something like the .45 as I already have a .45 pistol that I'm not going to be using as it isn't from a company authorized to be used by the police in my area (the company is CZ). I remember seeing the .357 Sig years ago but didn't really know much about it. Looking at what Paul and yourself have mentioned, I'm thinking the the Glock 31 or 32 chambered in .357 Sig is going to be the way I go. I'm a larger person, not fat large, so I can handle the calibers that are snappier like the .40 S&W, .357 Sig, 10mm, and so on with relative ease. So thank you for this info. Very useful. Much appreciated.
@@zagorith14 I would say .40. 10mm is expensive and uncommon(might be an issue in court). Also, .357 SIG runs at a higher pressure and is harder on guns than .40........

Love the .357 Sig in my P229! I use the Speer Gold Dots. Plenty of options online. Cost is a little higher but not by much if you shop around.
