Thank you both for sharing the lovely Christmas decorations in Taormina (one of my favorite towns)! I found my great grandmother's pearl ring with a gold stretch band from the 20's from Sicily. When I finally visited Taormina, I found a jewelry shop on the main shopping strip of Corso Umberto with the same ring! Needless to say I was flabbergasted to learn that these are hand made rings using local pearls in the shape of a flower. They are often found in different colors. Made me realize that when my great grandmother and grandfather eloped from Napoli and had their honeymoon in Taormina before getting on a ship to Alabama where they were married. It was forbidden for them to marry as her family had land in Tuscany and Naples with olive groves and wine vineyards and his family were butchers. Hence, their eloping and coming to the USA. I was lucky enough to meet them as a young girl as they lived long lives as they grew fruits and vegetables in Flatbush (Brooklyn, NY) and raised chickens keeping their Italian traditions living to 87 and 100 years old.
