    You can't access all off the effects/prefects on the pedal if the tube is not in it. The reason some presets don't work without the tube in is because those are the ones that need a tube to work. Some don't need a tube.

    Years back a repairman said, online, the tube did nothing. My 15vt does take warmup time, but I'll have to try it without the tube too. The amp is still quite nice. Thanks for the vid.

    It is called STARVED PLATE 12AX7 Preamp usually running at 45v (instead of the standard 100v). The LED is just for aesthetics coz 45 volts isn't enough to make the 12ax7 glow as it should on 100 volts... It definitely has an effect on overall sound since it adds tube warmth to the audio signal path. The preamp is still purely Analog BUT filtered by the 12AX7 tube. Sort of blending the tube warmth to the analog audio signal if you get I mean...

    Oszyby: as you certainly know, 12AX7 as other tubes of the same "dual triode" family have fairly dim filaments. As a comparison, the 6V6s in my CUB10 are wildly hot. The LED in itself is not faking anything, it is just highlighting the tube. This is called aesthetics. I am fairly certain the filaments are correctly fed at about 12.6V (6.3V) in series (parallel). You can check with a DVM. You should read 12.6V between pins 4 and 5 of the socket, or 6.3V between 4-9 or 5-9. So what is the point?

    I know nothing / very little about electronics - but my ears tell me the Tonelab sounds warmer than any multieffects unit I've played through (quite a lot).
    I have the LE.

  • @btnassu

    The LED is just a gimmick indeed. The valve is not. A tube in a starved plate circuit doesn't get hot enough to light up, but some people would expect it to do so. It's kinda cheesy, but I've seen that in other products. The tube is obviously not doing what it would do inside an actual amp. But it is not just hanging there, either. It adds a dynamic and somewhat scratchy dirt. As I told you, in the old blue desktop version, you can even control that dirt independently.

    Not every effect on it is a "Tube effect".....the tube IS necessary for the sounds meant to be tube emulated sounds, which is what is supposed to happen. It models Tube sounds, not by electronics but, by using an Actual tube in the chain so as to achieve a more realistic tube sound. It is what it's supposed to be...

    Well if everyone cannot get the fullest potential out of this unit, but want to stick with preamps for their sound, you might want to add to the Vox tonelab one of these "SansAmp Character Series" for their final out put, they are like real analog tube driven simulated amps, then you will have the complete setup without having to deal with Tube amps. There are a variety of them

    I dont`t get the point is of this video. Everyone that knows a little bit about tube circuits knows that manufacturers use LEDs for a tube glow on low voltage tube cercuits. Be happy that all the crunch and gain sounds seem to use the tube! Sound is all that matters. And for the price this thing sounds quite good.

  • @btnassu
    @btnassu 13 лет назад

    BTW, if you change the tube, you'll notice the sound also gets slightly different (e.g. you can get more headroom).
    Just to clarify: I'm not saying the tube operates some kind of miracle or anything. It is part of a much larger circuit, and most of the tone comes from the DSP. But it is not just a useless piece of glass sitting there. It does play a role, even if it has nothing to do with the "real tube tone" some expect when they "listen with their eyes" (and yes, the LED is for those people).

    I do belive that they put it where it is for looks but it does play a roll in the overall sound of some presets, if you have ever opended it up to look the tube is actually tied into alot of different things, its like a mix between ss and tube with a pan knob. kinda like there valvetronix amp look up the wireing digram it makes no since lol

  • @alexicaza

    All of the chosen presets ( 70, 87, 88, 92, 98) use "Clean CST" amp model [please refer to the operators manual]. Here is the description of this 'amp model' from the manual:
    CST (Custom)
    "This models only a four-band tone control that produces an
    undistorted, pure, clean tone. The GAIN control is disabled. ... "
    It is not an 'amp model' !
    So it is not surprising that the tube/valve is not involved in those presets.
    I have made the test with TL LE : no valve, no sound

    VOX are far not the only ones who highlight their vacuum tubes with LED. I suppose that at least half of todays brands do that for an aesthetic feel. But you can't omit the fact that the tube actually works. In fact, this video shows that one cannot use amp modelling without the valve. Btw it's also impossible to use distortion/overdrive/fuzz etc. Only 1 clean tone is available along with some effects that for sure have nothing to do with the tube (like modulation and time-based effects).

    LED is something many effect builders using starved circuits like to add. If you search for 'diy tube overdrive' in youtube, you will most likely find several tube overdrive pedals which's tube glows very brightly, or even glows with an odd color like white, blue or purple. That is because such a tube DOES NOT GLOW in a starved circuit. I have built some tube overdrives myself and witnessed that. Sound is great, but you dont got the 'correct' looks ;)

  • @rschua7
    @rschua7 11 лет назад

    The Starved plate 12ax7 tube does NOT process the signal as a REAL Tube preamp (Ala Marshall Valvestate) does... But it just let some signal through the tubes just like a High pass filter does in order to emulate the Tube Warmth. So in theory by design, it should work without the Tubes but it will loose that extra MOJO!

  • @btnassu
    @btnassu 13 лет назад

    Presets 70,87,88,92,98 all use the red Clean setting, whicht is just an uncolored EQ with no amp modeling. The fact that these presets still work after removing the tube do NOT imply it is just a gimmick. The fact that the other presets don't work is what shows the tube does have a role.
    The TL's circuit is obviously not comparable to an amp. The tube is used as a clipping device in a starved plate design. In the old desktop version, you can actually set the amount of dirt from valve reactor.

  • @pyrotas
    @pyrotas 12 лет назад

    In a starved project, the tube is almost always working near the "knee" of its current-grid voltage characteristics. This part of the characteristics is highly nonlinear, hence it imparts distinctive distortion to the signal. Therefore, the sound *is* clearly shaped by the tube and in a very dramatic way.
    5. A starved plate design however produces even and odd harmonics almost evenly. The "distortion quality" is rather harsh and not comparable to a "good" tube design.

    tonelab's tube serves as a power tube simulation.a real tube amp still distorts without power amp section.vox thinks the most impoert thing a in a valve amp is the power tube.this leads the tonelab series,and in the vox tonelab's amp series the 12ax7 is changed to power tubes like 6l6 or something.

    I have some NOS GE 12AU7 in a project of mine and one of these has a very brilliant filament. However this is certainly not a requirement. After all, these are *not* lightbulbs, are they?
    3. I don't see anything special in finding that the thingy there still works on some presets, namely those that *do not* sport any "high gain" feature.
    4. It is likely that this product employs a "starved plate" circuit. Namely, the tube is employed at a much lower anodic voltage than the "official" one.

  • @pyrotas
    @pyrotas 12 лет назад

    6. Point 5 remains of course valid if you are one of the audiophiles or nerds who would swear on the Stratocaster of Hendrix that they can clearly distinguish the second harmonic from *any* other harmonic present in a signal. Your mileage may vary.
    In conclusion, I don't see the message of this video.

Its happened twice so far , just wanna kno if this is normal ?? Has it happened to u ?? Should I get it replaced ?? also since its most likely that the LED is causing the bright light .

  • @treasuremen

    the filament of an ecc83/12ax7 runs with 6.3v, and the plate voltage, from 200 to 350 volts, if the voltage isn´t enought, the tube will not work anything, even the filament was working it could be using 1 amp or more, and its so difficult to get 350volts from DC current; that is the worst thing for the battery, then a led is used, so filament is not working, the tube doesnt work neither, is like a diode, if the voltage on a diode is under 0,7 volts its like not doing nothing

  • @Driftuner
    @Driftuner 11 лет назад

    no it doesnt..u have to consider that what makes a "tube sound" is the signal of the tube going to the speaker..if u have the tube on this pedal going into a solid state amp, then the pedal-tube signal will go first thru the solid state transistors and then to the speaker..whick will again sound like a transistor amp...maybe a bit better? i dont know, i have never tried..but theoretical it shouldnt work...its a signal "path" thing..

    I've been using a Tonelab ST for all my recording and live use - to my ears, it still has the best amp modeling out there for under $1000 - only idiots who don't learn to use it properly complain about it (they only use the presets and never learn to program it). This video fails to demonstrate that when you use the overdrive/distortion models, it doesn't work - meaning the tube actually serves a purpose!

Well, to be honest, the distortion patchs don't work without the tube. maybe they use it. it does'nt make this thing bad, it's a pretty cool multi effect, but stop cheating with false valves.

    Criminal? Hold back your horses, dude. Even if it is almost surely used in a starved plate design, the 12AX7 produces a certain amount of heat which has to be dissipated. The grating serves this purpose. Since that tube has rather "dull" heaters, VOX has decided to backlight the tube with a LED for improved appearance. Is that criminal? If so, every person wearing a tie should put in jail for much the same reason.
