What I feel like a LOT of guys interested in getting an "adventure motorcycle" completely fail to comprehend is the real world price of all that WEIGHT....Yes it can be so well designed and well suspended and electronic helps that along with your pre-existing dirt riding skills you CAN expect to be able to ride one of these beasts out in some amazing places ...but the flip side to that is that as a matter of FACT if you keep taking her offroad you WILL dump that big son of gun ....probably much sooner than later ....Tell you what ....ask the salesman at the dealership if he/she would please help you gently lay the bike over on it's side "just want to make sure I can pick her back up myself" ....Should be some lawn near the dealership ....maybe a parkway out front or back? Nice soft grass so nothing is going to get scuffed on the bike. EVEN with an empty tanked large displacement multi cylinder motorcycle you are going to be AMAZED at how frickin HEAVY these beasts are! Then imagine picking it up when you are raggedass tired and had just refilled the 6 gallon fuel tank....AND it is loaded down with extra gear and food and water ....imagine the thing now weighs fully 650 pounds? But NOT on level freshly mowed cool lawn but on a heavily rutted rock strewn INCLINE Now just try to honestly imagine getting this beasty back to a vertical rideable state? Go you even one better? Imagine being UNDER this behemoth? Trapped! Happened to me three weeks ago on a much much lighter motorcycle! Now I am nursing third degree burns....probably not from the temperature but just the abrasion of trying to get free...I was pinned after bobbling in a rut on a downhill .....Iwas just tired, the bike stalled and I could not catch it in time or hop off in time and it went over trapping my leg ....was impossible to get leverage anyway to pick the bike and so I writhed in pain until my brother finally realized I was not behind him stopped....waited a while and then turned back to find me ....how long? felt like forever but probably was 20 minutes or so....long enough to utterly destroy my skin (yes i had thick leather boots on but not off road boots with plastic armor)
Anyway IF you are planning to ride offroad with one of these you really must understand what you are getting yourself into! HEAVY SOB!

The problem with the comment about going to test all the bikes before you buy one is just silly, how do you go out and spend 200K + on one of these machines and they tell you test ride it around a parking lot.
Come on dealers you can do better than that, the only one I have found in the Cape Town area who will let you take the bike out for a proper ride in BMW.

"600 changes"? Look when it comes to marketing phraseology I have become ultra suspicious and maybe overly sensitive to their potential for BS hype . For instance when the term "dry weight" is mentioned my BS antenna goes fully erect and the warning voice in my head strobes "Liar alert Liar alert ....warning....danger will robinson" Because as anyone who has researched the subject already knows, when a manufacturer quotes a "dry weight" figure? It is NOT simply the weight of the motorcycle minus fuel ...it could in fact be a whopping 70llbs or even more! So when I hear "600 changes"? What does that REALLY mean? Let's just consider the possibility is NOT 600parts changes but 600 ANY aspect of change ....Say for instance you put a new swing arm on a motorcycle is that one change? Or ten? Because in addition to the change of one part number a smart ass could say yes but also now "a different color swing arm". and it 1mm longer and so "a longer wheelbase" and the additional leverage point increases the travel by 1mm "more rear suspension travel" and because the swing arm angles downwards then any length change also slightly raises the bike slightly "increased ground clearance" And because the new part includes threaded bosses, now you can buy optional spools so there is change number 6....and while sure enough each thing can be legitimately described as a change? Really one COULD still say it was ONE change....what do you think? Just adjusting your drive chain one increment is moving the rear wheel backwards or forwards changing several things incrementally ...Do you tell a friend "I made several changes to my motorcycle today" or do you just say "I adjusted my chain" See what I mean? So for marketing hype what exactly should we count as a legitimate "change" when they say a new model has "600 changes"? How many individual new PARTS were actually involved? NOT counting mere finish changes how many new parts? Because I mean a gold anodized part is still the same physical part as a black or silver one ...right? It's just cosmetic...not a "change" Yes it is changed but does THAT count AS a legitimate "change"?
