When Dan says "highly recommend " that's the real deal, no doubt, this has been reasearched, so now all the richer for sound advice. Haven't been led astray yet!👍
After a year and a half of viewing and learning from so much of your content, you're still dropping new knowledge on me my man! I bought another Chicago Comb to use in the shower on conditioning days but never thought about using it to gently exfoliate during a daily wash. Gonna try it right now, thanks dude!
One thing I found that helps is to load up some beard conditioner or cowash or softener before combining and it helps get the comb all the way thru the beard to detangle and breakup and crumbs or product buildup in the full beard before the wash
The rim of my metal beard-butter tin made some rusty beard butter. This got me thinking about rust and hair and beards. Naturally, this got me thinking about Dan C. I don't know whether you covered it or whether you care to. If anyone has or will...
I use my Chicago (pet) comb & scalp scrubber 2 exfoliate my beard. All thanks 2 the "Trusted Teacher". It also helps detangle my beard, making it easier when applying products
I was confident I’ve been doing this correctly. Here I’ve been doing beard wash, silicone scrubber, then raking the skin with my Chicago comb. Can’t wait to see if this makes a difference long term now that I’ll be doing the raking first! Side note, I see so many other beard communities telling men with beardruff to throw chemicals and head and shoulders in their beards. It drives me crazy! Granted some guys have unique skin conditions that may require some type of intervention, but generally exfoliating and having a good beard wash/oil routine is all it takes!
I've been doing this for a while now, ever since I heard Dan mention it in a previous video. I can't say that I noticed a difference right away, but like so many other things on this channel I believe if Dan recommends something it can't be a bad thing. And if nothing else, it's at least worth trying, right?! He hasn't let me down yet 👍🏻
Okay, Wow. This is something that I've been doing simply for detangling purposes. Didn't realize that it had an extra added benefit! Thanks so much for your videos. I don't get to watch them all. But it seems like when I do, it's one that really hits home! I've learned so much from these!
I've heard you mention this is other videos and I keep meaning to try it. I feel that my beard is already healthy and grows at a good rate. It will be interesting to see how this impacts my beard going forward.
Great video sir and I completely agree. I use a nu brush in the shower because my beard is super curly and wiry and grows in so many different directions. But yes. I use it before a wash with just water and I use it with wash as well. Gently that is
G’day Dan C once again you’ve produced another masterpiece and such an amazing game changer Tip for us Bearded brothers I’ve been doing this EVERY DAY!!! since you aired this vid and I can Honestly Say just in this very short time of 10days I can see length now it’s almost like the constant combing with the Chicago No8 has woken up or untangled the tightness of the thick hairs and allowed them to fall naturally THUS visual growth You are my Yoda cheers from DownUnder 🇦🇺
Great topic, this is a tip every bearded fella needs to know! I personally keep a Chicago Comb pick in the shower.. I like to put beard wash in and use the pick to exfoliate my face as well as rake out the beard.. Great stuff!
Thanks Dan! I used to (up to yesterday tbh) run the comb through right out of the shower while still wet, but post-wash. Doesn't make any sense to introduce dead skin flakes into a squeaky clean beard if I stop and think about it. We're prepping for a large cookout tomorrow. If I don't make it tonight I wish you and the fam a safe and happy 4th!
Great topic and education. I do this with my Chicago comb daily. Q: Does it matter if you do the comb exfoliation during warm water or cold water? Q: Does it matter if you do it with the beard wash or without beard wash? Q: Should you rinse with warm or cold water after you run the comb through?
1) warm is recommended 2) with the beard wash or before is totally fine, personal preference 3) rinse with warm water and finish at the very end with a cold rinse Great questions!
I remember in one of your earlier videos that you had said that combining in shower was a must. Been doing ever since. Great Video keep up the good work. Happy Independence Day 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You’re not Dan, you’re Mr Motivator. Great tip. I first learned this several years ago from the ‘Sultan of Silver’, Mr George Bruno, before I discovered your YT channel. 😘
Great vid!!! I used to do this after putting shampoo in and not necessarily comb but just get into skin. I’ve slacked off on this. Still comb conditioner but need to bring this back🍻🍻🍻
I 100% agree with you that it makes all the difference in the world! Exfoliation with the comb works great. I use a silicone exfoliating scrubber and a comb in the shower. I believe you mentioned this in a previous video, but I’m glad you have a dedicated video on the subject now. 👊🤘
I fought against getting the Chicago Comb #8 for a few years. I mean $15 for a comb? You’re crazy! I bought comb after comb to use instead. After this video I broke down and got one. Wow! It is truly a beard comb for beards. Wasted so much money and time instead of just getting it from the start. Lesson learned.
Great video Dan I will start doing this , I love my Chicago combs aswell fantastic combs , I’ve actually started doing the cold rinse in the shower after I seen your other video and I’m feeling fantastic for it , appreciate the info Dan
When you exfoliate you are breaking up stuff from the surface of the skin. If you do it in the shower before or while washing, you get rid of those things. If you only do it after the shower, all the stuff is still in the beard
Ok Dan I exfoliate nearly daily. Sometimes with the #8 Chicago comb and sometimes with the toolitries exfoliater I will now exfoliate EVERY day with the #8. So if I correct I’m just using the toolitries to work in the shampoo?
No, this is for the shower and you do not use a boar’s brush in the shower. This is addressing the skin, so the length of beard literally does not matter
Great video! I've learned so much watching your channel! Quick question, I wasn't 100% clear on this, maybe I just missed it. Are you coming your beard dry in the shower or do you wet it and then comb it?
Hey dan great video as always. Beard looks great too. Is there a particular beard scrubber you would recommend?? Just kind of starting my longer beard journey
You know I was doing that for a while and relieved that most of the hair I find in the drain is from doing it when I had stop using the comb I had less hair in the drain. But at the same time I also noticed exactly what you mentioned my beard had stalled it growth. Any idea as to why I had so much more hair in the drain
Either going too aggressively or you were just naturally shedding more at that time, rather than spread out throughout the day and not noticing as much. Likely were both shedding more
I do not do rinse days and do not recommend anyone else does. I used to in the beginning but have had a few videos over the last few years going over washing daily
It's funny I've been doing all of this in the shower before this video I guess great minds think alike right dan also don't forget to comb that underbeard also

I hate seeing people resort to chemicals to treat symptoms with chemicals
All guys that haven't set this to standard care, it is truly great thing to do for you, your beard. Plus it cleans your combs n brushes.

My beard drift stopped as soon as I started doing this in the shower.
When I started watching your videos about four months back.

Perfect reminder!
Thanks Dan. Never heard this before. My Kent comb will now reside in the shower!
Glad I could help!!
My Chicago comb No 8 is my best friend.
Such an important tool!
2 weeks in, I’ve been using a boar hair brush to exfoliate my skin but now it hurts when I touch the hair. Maybe I’ll try the comb instead.
Comb for sure and don’t go too aggressively
I've been following your advice on this for a while. Game changer. Appreciate you Dan.
Love it 🤝
I 100% agree with you that it makes all the difference in the world! Exfoliation with the comb works great. I use a silicone exfoliating scrubber and a comb in the shower. I believe you mentioned this in a previous video, but I’m glad you have a dedicated video on the subject now. 👊🤘
Straight up!
Do this er day and have for years now thanks to all this knowledge from you Dan!
Love that Scott!
By raking before you wash you mean already soaking wet beard before you work the beardwash in?
Correct!
Hi Dan, good information, I do it every day when I shower, I learned it from you, good video. Have a wonderful day
Thanks, you too!

Chicago comb in the shower (pre-wash) and boar bristle outside of the shower/end of the day?

Same same!
All starter kits should consist of a minimum of 4, #8 Chicago Combs. #1 & #7 too...
Could you tell me what's the difference between what you just said and doing it after the shower?
When you exfoliate you are breaking up stuff from the surface of the skin. If you do it in the shower before or while washing, you get rid of those things. If you only do it after the shower, all the stuff is still in the beard
YES! awesome video Dan! 🔥🔥🔥

I am addicted to it lol
Would a boar bristle work for a short beard, a comb seems to do nothing to my short beard
No, this is for the shower and you do not use a boar’s brush in the shower. This is addressing the skin, so the length of beard literally does not matter
This is great advice as always appreciate it Dan thank you
My pleasure!
Great video! I've learned so much watching your channel!

Ty for the advice, i'm a little confused though, are we combing the beard hairs or the skin? or both? i think both?
It’s one in the same. Your hair starts at the follicle, which is in the skin where you are combing

Dan, do I want my beard wet when I comb? Obviously before the wash gets on.
Yes 🤝
I've just been using a scrubber. So this comb technique works better?
It’s different, but more necessary
Great tip
Glad you think so!
I used to do that, but now that it's down to an 18 guard it seems pointless
Oh man, equally as important. Skin is skin, doesn’t matter how long the hair is. For health of the skin and hair, not hair growth rate
why would my face notice a difference between a shower shampoo brush and a comb? i don't get it?
The surface tension from the firmness of the comb and the shape of the ends of the teeth/tines.
Hopefully that helps!

Not as well, no. The firm exfoliating in the shower can only really be achieved with a comb

My question is why wait so long to let us guys know about this?! Ha! I do it this once a week, but will move to every time I wash my beard.
