Another way to check your alternator is hook up your multi meter to your battery and start engine and if it's charging the voltage will climb to around 14-15 volts if it's charging correctly if it decreases it's bad

But what if battery is also bad. My battery says 11.5 volts 100% charge when off then when I turn car on it says 12.5 volts 57% charge.. how do I know if it's just battery that is bad or both battery and alternator in this case. ... I can't seem to reach my alternator with volt meter to Check it like this guy did.. any advice??

@@hatersgotohell627 You don't have to have your voltmeter on your alternator to check it like I said you hook to battery since it charges it and if your battery is holding 11.5 volts it should be alright with your voltmeter hooked to your battery while running it should show up to 13-15 volts and then turn your engine off and leave voltmeter hooked up and see if it holds a charge of 11-12 volts and both alternator and battery should be good 👍

why would an alternator need voltage to work ? it actually produce the voltage . you start the engine with the battery voltage, which make the serpentine belt turn and making the alternator pulley rotate and send voltage TO the battery and all components of the car. im pretty sure the 12v cable you test is the cable that GIVE the voltage to the battery. if alternator not running you basically just get the battery voltage through that cable. battery must be between 12.2v (60%)and 12.6v(100%). when engine is running you get the alternator voltage which must be over 13v but around 14v is what you looking for. the test you shown could have been done on the battery itself and would get the same value.

For some reason my alternator stopped charging my battery but my battery is new and tested my alternator at autozone and it was good. However, I’ve checked my battery to alternator power wire and come to realize it reads no volts could this be the reason why it’s not charging?
