I like Onana but I really want zubamendi. He was looking really good when he got subbed on for Spain.
When it comes to his percentile stats they are very deflated because she plays for Shean D’s Everton. A side with one of the better defended and a very poor attack. Old British bully ball, “cold, wet night in stoke” type system. When you are not one of the best sides you don’t keep that many clean sheets (3rd I believe after Arsenal & City) without major sacrifices going forward & on the ball.
The real stat that shows his quality is that his pass completion % is consistently about 15 percentile points higher than where his pass completions & attempts. That shows he is opperating at a level higher than the system he is in relative to other players in more favourable teams/systems.
I am saying this because I think the “he is a bad passer” point is exaggerated.
I think he is a perfect replacement for party. Should he go. I think he is actually an upgrade simply if he is just fit an available but 5% to 10% worse. He is also like 8 year younger I believe which is massive.
My concern is the Jourginho/ESR/Viera blend of the midfield.
Jourginho is staying which if fine and I am okay with. He is the deep lying ball progressed that you’d want to upgrade with Frankie DJ hopefully next year.
ESR/Viera one has to be like our second 8 and the other our second 10. They just have to be more productive and trusted to occupy spots in the squad. Other wise you replace one with a Bruno G no8 type and the other with like a Xavi Simmons no10 type.
That is where our midfield is slightly unbalanced imo. In theory it has all the required components but in practice we haven’t seen that.
Skinny is this. Onana only works as a direct replacement for Partey.
Our midfield struggled against low/mid blocks last year because for whatever reason Viera/ESR didn’t contribute as the should.
We saw how it can work in GW38. Zinny & ESR come in as we push for a goal. Our lines move up 10 meters. Then we have three defenders behind a lone 6, two 10s behind our front three.
This is my preferred starting 11.
Martinelli. Isak. Saka
Wirtiz. Odegaard
Rice
Timber. Gabriel. Siliba. Frimpong
Raya
That's a 250+ M transfer

At 22 Onana can only get better with the right environment which Arsenal will provide. And he and Rice should hold down the no.6 position. Arsemal should go out and get another 8 that is tenacious & technical, creative, and with goals and assosts in him. If Ebere Eze can play there, then he and Xavi Simons should be signed to play alongside as well as substitute Odegaard. Too bad ESR cannot keep fit.

AlexBaena, BrahimDiaz, EberechiEze, DaniOlmo and FlorianNeuhaus are the type midfielders we needed.
TommyDoyle is also good but he has recently signed for Wolves. I’m not sure if we are still monitoring Aouar but the talent is still there.
Also, a very unpopular opinion, bringing back Ceballos would not be a bad idea. Brandt would also be a good signing. I also wondered if Tonali would be available for a discount.
DeJong’s wages, BrunoGuimaraes’ and DouglasLuiz’ transfer fees are expensive. Kimmich is getting old. Zubimendi is good but I don’t think he is as amazing as people are saying. Unuvar needs more experience.

Onana is savagely overrated, for that money you can get not one but two better playes inr Reo Hatate and Maxence Caqueret. And as cherry on top you'll have mone for Serhou Guirassy
Why I would be supportive of a tactical tweak that incorporated adding Onana (alternatively, Fofana) into our midfield, is that I hope it would be part of an evolutionary strategy in transforming to a permanent box midfield instead of inverting an auxiliary midfielder from full back.
In it not being disputed that as a defensive midfielder, Rodri is number one in the league and Rice deemed next best, the base to a box midfield of Rice and Onana suddenly colours the argument in our favour as to which would be the most effective and influential in comparison to Rodri at the base of a three.
From the level of ball retention and security against getting overpowered and overrun they would provide, scope for the likes of a Vieira or Smith-Rowe to be accommodated alongside Odegaard at the top of the box is made more feasible in offsetting any perceived loss of midfield passing range, quality or volume.
However, mindful of Arteta's recognising of Havertz's skill set being more in tune with that of a goalscoring midfielder like Thomas Muller, (he never said he was the direct replacement for Xhaka, fans simply assumed that) than that of an out and out striker, having him forming the top of the box with Odegaard and free to now break into the penalty area at will like a secondary striker but without having been picked up and marshalled by central defenders.
Room then for that center forward this team is crying out for to spearhead our attacking 3 and go to the next level. In addition to that, as the result of playing with an inverted full back for 2 years straight, our defence is now in tune and accustomed to operating as a back 3, so switching to a dedicated set up in the 3-4-3 formation, does not suggest any problems with it will suddenly appear.
I was with you up until you said you wanted someone like Ødegaard on the left hand side. From what I've seen over the last 3 years with this system, playing two players like that loses us that perfect midfield balance. I think it's either Rice in the 8 or a box to box midfielder that does enough off the ball in defense to give us that balance. Arteta has tried playing Ødegaard and another 10 on the other side, I've never seen a great balance when he did that with ESR, Vieira or Havertz.
That 8 should be someone like Fabian Ruiz, I remember back in his Napoli days I always looked at him as that perfect Xhaka replacement. He's 28 now do that ship has sailed

Players that can beat a press with dribble or the right pass. Rice is not great at the press because he doesn't always make the best pass to breakdown and opponent.
Sure maybe Onana will win back the ball but he will lose the ball more often or put Arsenal in a neutral or disadvantageous position with his next pass.

Weirdly west ham were in for onana a few years back, to play alongside rice, but Everton got the deal done instead. So we could finally see a rice/onana midfield

Pep never sacrifice technicality, silkyness and tekkyness in the midfield.
The game nowadays might need more physicality and athleticism. It’s true that the ManCity trio are more physical than the Barcelona trio. But in terms of technicality, there is no big difference. There might be a slight drop off but it’s not significant.
Whereas Rice does offer more physicality and defensive capability, but he is a huge drop off in terms of technicality if you compare him to those Spanish greats.
Getting Onana would further reduce our midfield technicality. The gap between us to the top teams would only be even further apart.

Bruno Guimaraes is unequivocally the player that improves Arsenals midfield onto the next level. A big brute is not what Arsenals style is about.

I agree with the Rice 8 being an issue but if Onana signs, he's only going to be an option, not a sure starter. Imo Rice and Odegaard will be the only sure starters in the midfield while the 3rd spot will be dependent on different games. Onana, Vieira, Jorginho, Havertz will all be options to play midfield depending on games and gamestate. Also if Rice gets injured, we don't have anyone else with the same physical profile and we'll lose our physical edge in midfield. Onana is perfect to cover that

Arsenal lost the league because we had a dip mid season.
There is a price that comes with having a better defence. Rice just can’t play progressive passes like Partey could do. So the quality of our build up drops.
And as a team, we stopped playing such a high line as we did last season in exchange for a better defence. So in terms of the quantity (the density) of players that are close to the opponent box, we are not as good as last season.
When Partey was injured, we have no solution playing against teams that park the bus. We are forever passing between Rice and our defenders. In terms of our ability to break down a low block, both our quality and quantity have dropped.
As a result, the quality of our possession, ball progression and chance creation were nonexistent.

Onana is Partey's replacement. That simple. He's younger, more physically dominant, and more durable. Kai Havertz, Onana, and Rice will wreak havoc defensively, which will lead to goals in transition. Arsenal will suffocate teams in their half of the pitch.
So, where would Odegaard play because we play with only 3 midfielders?

1. What gave you the impression that Arteta 's ultimate vision is to have 2 10s with Odegaard +1?
2. Rice is currently our best ball carrier in the team and not our best passer. Why would you put someone like that at the base of midfield where he has the entire pitch opening up to him?
1(b). Don't you think it's a loose - loose for the team to have Rice at 6? He's our best ball carrier. You'd be taking that away from the team while also using up a position that would be better filled by a passer.
3. Many times, I've made comments that have unfortunately not been seen by you ( I guess) about this apparent "striker priority". How could you look at our midfield and want us to spend 100m on a striker? We need Onana (as Rice backup at 8) plus a 6 who can actually pass the ball. FDJ, Bruno or someone in the mould.

Mikel is NOT deploying Declan as a 6, he doesn’t yet have the line break capability that Rodri does for mid blocks. He can’t platform attacks like Partey.
Just take a look at the cluster of games that really cost us the PL in December, Villa, West Ham, and Fulham games. What is common in all of those games, Rice at 6 and Kai at 8.
What changed in Jan after Dubai, it wasn’t because it was a good rest, or the because we did something amazing on the training pitch.
It was Arteta being brave enough to put J20 in the 6 position who did an amazing job of breaking lines and platforming attacks, Declan higher up the pitch where he can use his power and press capability to suffocate teams.
Kai not at 8 but in that unique Kai forward position. It worked beautifully, Declan because of his engine playing that 8 box to box role helping out in defence.
No we don’t need any more ball winners we need someone as technically gifted and high IQ as Rodri in the 6 position. Zubimendi perhaps, but defo a player that can break down mid blocks.
Most of Declan’s minutes when everyone is fit is played at 8 by Mikel NOT 6. He just isn’t elite at platforming attacks.

Although right now he's still rather raw....I feel that his potential is COLOSSAL, and with the right coaching >> development & mentoring: he could be at least as good as prime Partey....so yes!! Let's snap him up as soon as possible!! ✌✌
