A homunculus is basically a little artificial person, usually fused with something else. Pretty much every non-human character in Smiling Friends is officially called a "Critter", some of which like Charlie are apparently born as homunculi. There's a famous instance of an attempt to create a real-life homunculus, there's this Russian guy on RUclips that injected his DNA into a chicken egg and kept it incubated in a sock drawer. It ended up hatching as this horrifying little worm thing that spit acid at him so he crushed it to death with a bible.
