      Hi Fields Lodge! We’re en route to Cherbourg France as we speak. It’s a bit bumpy out here, south of St Anne’s Head, but this strong boat is handling it well. 🙂 Thanks for your kind comments. Rick and Carolyn.

    Always a pleasure watching. This is my dream boat. I sail a Beneteau First 375 at the moment. It's really great to sail (and a fast boat) but she won't take me to the places an Exploration 45 would. I'm keeping the dream alive through your videos at least. Fair winds to you.

    Ican see there is a sheet tidy area in the cockpit, have you ever thought about using it? You have plenty of time on a passage, unless you're tacking. A fantastic yacht ⛵

    • @SailingSnowGum
      @SailingSnowGum  Год назад

      Hi Mark. There's two storage bins on either side of the cockpit. Between passages all of the lines fit in the aft ones. We used the front ones (under the dodger) for various objects we wanted to keep handy, but not for lines. They're not ideal for that. What we found is that active sailing involved using virtually all of the lines, so there really wasn't much point putting them away in the bins. It would slow us down as well. No, leaving them where they fall worked well, though usually one of us would scoop them up and lay them in some sort of order on the cockpit seats, to reduce the trip hazard. With this boat you've got to enjoy mucking around with ropes to enjoy sailing it. Fortunately, I did.
      As with all boats and sailing, there's benefit from arranging the lines so they're flaked on the deck or seat, for easy, tangle free running, such as when dropping the main. In this case the double run of the main halyard down and back up the mast makes for a crazy amount of line that needs to run. Flaking it before a fast drop (or putting in a couple of reefs) makes for a much better outcome.
      My advice to anyone who doesn't like the look of lines on the cockpit floor or seats is, don't buy this boat! Buy a motor boat or at worst a sailboat with hydraulic furling. Way less rope to deal with! 🙂Regards, Rick.

      Hi Stewart. G’day to you in New Zealand - a great yachting nation and Australia’s favourite little brother - who annoyingly keeps beating us at most things! (including Prime Ministering) 🤨 But we don’t mind. Before ordering this Garcia we hunted around for aluminium sailing yacht builders in NZ. There’s the company that builds the Dashew FPB motor boats (still?) … but I didn’t find a sail boat builder. Hmmm 🤔

    Hello, 04:20 there is a symmetry error in the Chartplotter assembly. Did the manufacturer make a mistake in the assembly or did you assemble it yourself later?

      Hello Araz. There is no symmetry error. The edges of the cockpit bulkhead and shelf are not horizontal. However, the chartplotter and instruments are installed horizontally. 🙂 It’s all good. Regards, Rick.

      Always nice to see you Sandee. A funny story - the two pairs of Levi’s I have are getting a bit threadbare so I started hunting around the shops near Fishguard. Not a chance I was told. So I started looking online and the only site I could find with my size in 100% cotton (no stretch!) was in the good ol’ USA. Good prices too. Carolyn said, ‘Sandee will know where to get them. And they’ll be here tomorrow.’ Ha! Good memories. 🙂 In the end I caught a bus to a bigger town nearby, which had Wrangler jeans, Texas model. ‘’Just like Levi’s Straights,’ the nice lady promised and she was right. On special, too. 😄

    How sailing videos should be...

  • @nielshofkes2831
    @nielshofkes2831 3 года назад

    Rick, I noticed in the video that you seem to have two buckets placed at the transom (one on either side). Do they have a specific purpose or is it just a convenient place to store them?

    • @SailingSnowGum
      @SailingSnowGum  3 года назад +1

      Hello Niels. Carolyn here. The two buckets hold rain water that we had collected. It’s very handy for rinsing things. We tied the buckets on to the transom during passage. I can tell if Rick’s been leaning the boat too much by how much water is left in them! He’s in trouble if he loses too much. :)

    • @nielshofkes2831
      @nielshofkes2831 3 года назад

      @@SailingSnowGum That’s clever, so it has actually double purpose: fresh water for rinsing as well as measuring the angle of heel of the boat! However, I would expect that you may loose them if you would have a large following wave crashing on the stern. BTW, I had a test sail on a GE45 last year and the guys from Garcia told me that the boat doesn’t heel further than what it did at that time, which wasn’t very much compared to what I am used to. This is because of the shape of the hull and the centered ballast. I have meanwhile ordered a GE 45 but will have to wait a while before they will be building it because of the long waiting list.

    • @SailingSnowGum
      @SailingSnowGum  3 года назад

      @@nielshofkes2831 Wow Niels! Congratulations on ordering your boat! How exciting. The hull design incorporates what Racoupeau calls ‘beam stability’, aka form stability, which makes it sail without leaning much, until the sails are overpowered. Then it leans! 😄

      @@bigeyetuna6228 Ah, now I understand. You’ve quite naturally assumed that we want viewers, but actually, that would be wrong. We make these videos for the very small number of people who are genuinely thinking about buying one of these boats. They will be hungry for shots of the boat, its bit and pieces and how it sails. They don’t want to see our faces, what we’re having for dinner or how I put my makeup on. They probably wouldn’t mind girls in bikinis, but there’s a shortage of those ‘roun’ here at the moment.

Incidentally, the number of views is about the same as the number of subscribers, so it seems that there is a very loyal fanbase. I am one of them.
