- The Roland MC-101 GROOVEBOX combines premium-quality synthesizer and drum sounds, samples, patterns and effects in a compact four-track sequencer that’s go-everywhere portable. Create whenever, and wherever, inspiration strikes with this pocket production studio and add performance-ready tracks to your DAWless or compact synthesizer setup.
In this video, Peter Brown gives you an overview of the beatmaking possibilities of the Roland MC-101. This overview looks at some of the sounds and performance techniques to get you making music anywhere.
About the MC-101...
The Roland MC-101 has a four-track sequencer optimized for beatmakers, producers and mobile music makers creating today's electronic and dance-oriented music. You can use the 16 ultra-sensitive RGB pads to create drum, bass, and synthesizer patterns and create your own original music. It's your musical playground, where you can freely combine loops and one-shots with melodic phrases including your own imported audio recordings and MIDI sequences. Compose and trigger clips, rearrange, re-sample, record your knob movements, and more.
On top of that, add the Roland sounds that have defined electronic and dance genres for over forty years. Legendary instruments like the TR-808, TR-909, JUNO-106 and SH-101 are all here, ready to replicate classic sounds or be combined, tweaked, and processed into entirely new sounds.
With the MC-101's massive effects palette, your music sounds polished and fully-produced. Each track has independent effects processors with a huge number of variations. The lush chorus brings depth to pads and other synth sounds. Delays and reverbs create evocative spaces and add movement to delicate sequences. Overdrive, distortion, and amp simulation add grit and intensity to synths, guitars, drums and more. You can also run your entire mix through master effects like filters, bit-crushers and a master bus compressor that glues it all together with punch and clarity.

I bought it! I'm nearly 65 years old, it's the 1st Groovebox I've ever owned, and I've had it a week. I have some comments for viewers and for ROLAND...First- THE SOUNDS! They are simply stellar, and are the main reason I bought it. And there are over 3000 of them with almost NO duds! The build quality is excellent, it seems durable. Its size is just perfect, and being battery (or USB) powered, it is very portable. Love that it came with an SD Card. I knew in advance it's not as powerful as the MC707. The buttons, knobs and faders feel solid. (Pads are not velocity sensitive.) OK Roland....A few suggestions for a future update based on my week of ownership...(and please correct me if any of these are erroneous or don't make sense.): 1- Add a SONG MODE...to string the Scenes together. Please! 2- Make the Project Title be displayed after edits are made. 3- Add a Count-In or metronome. Please! 4- Add an Undo feature. 5- Add a "Favorites" marker for Sounds. There are just too many to have to hunt. 6- Improve the Measure/Beat display. After 2 measures go by, I'm lost. Make it cover all 128 Steps. 7- Increase the Note Length range greater than 4.99 in the Step Edit function...with the rotary knob. 8- Add an Append/Duplicate function for Phrases and/or Clips. 9- Improve the C1-C4 function so that the value doesn't "jump" from current position to knob position. It makes it hard to make smooth (filter) adjustments in performance. 10- Add a "Return To Safe/Default State" function to the C1-C4 knobs. After an edit, it's hard to remember what the Default setting was. (If nothing else, at least note the Default Values for parameters in the User Manual.) 11- Add a Clip Button "latch" option for selecting Scenes. In a live performance, this is a 2-handed operation (bad for guitarist). 12- Add a Shift Button "latch" option. Nearly every edit requires a Shift press. 13- Add an overall Output Volume feature to the Drum Track (in addition to the Fader)...similar to the Tone (Sound) editing feature. Overall....Thumbs Up, a great addition to a rig, albeit a tad pricey. I'm loving mine.
I chose the MC 707 for the better workflow but for portability (battery powered and small form factor) this one is a good alternative to the Novation Circuit (which I also own). But what I like most of Roland products is their sound. Huge collection of ready to use for non sound designers like me.
"9- Improve the C1-C4 function so that the value doesn't "jump" from current position to knob position." On page 40 of the Reference manual, it shows that if you press SHIFT+FILTER to go to the UTILITY menu, and select SYSTEM, there is a Knob Mode setting that can be changed to "CATCH", which means nothing changes until the knob has passed through the current setting. So if your note length is at 3, and your C4 knob is turned all the way to the left, it doesn't instantly make your note length 1.
I'm still looking for a way to make note length grater than 4.99 without playing it in...
MediCare-101 j/k that’s cool to hear! I’m an oldie too but got my first machine(sp202) when I was 19. Beat on!
Im fifty .. u have a idea of my sound .. I own a boutique o8 and korg monologue ... wold this improve or should it would could be down to me .. thanks ,, idvvalue yer say
128 steps, that means the same as eight bars of music?
roland is crazy , this is the coolest mobile groove box , every day i am playing around with it outside...jungle, drone, electro, acid house, dub tech,dub.... also very good for gothic tech, the random synth features..i am thinking about to buy a second one because i learned to handle it.
I love Roland. I remember buying the Roland MC-303 back n the day
Recently I bought one, and I have a lot of fun with it, even I only scratch the surface. Plenty of sounds and a good user interface. Very happy with it.
The ultimate portable drum machine. Loaded all my high quality vintage drum samples, pricewise this beats Elektron digitakt or Akai mpc one.
Damn... a mic input is all that's missing and it would be a perfect portable tool for making demos.
I got this instead of Digitakt and MPC because the mc-101 is more portable. I got this instead of Model:Samples/Cycles because why have two devices when you can have one like the mc-101. I got this instead of circuit because the mc-101 sounded better to my ears. I got this in addition to my op-1 because the op-1 sounds a bit thin to me and the tape-mode was a chore to make a song on so I was attracted to mc-101's sound engine and clips/scenes. I also have an SP-404SX but my fingers were getting tired and it was hard to bring in sounds into it. So yeah, I got the MC-101! It's amazing. It's the golden age of music making now that big companies like Roland are stepping into the portable dawless revolution.
The Roland MC-101 would be a great Christmas gift!
I was seriously considering getting one; I learned I should check prices before reviews.
Pretty fair price for everything it offers.
I find Roland gear is always €100 more than I expect it to be. Always out of my price range.
Luke Watts I agree over all. The Jupiter Xm seems great but it’s about $500 more than it should be. $999 and it’d be a no brainer for me and probably lots of others. I have a feeling all of these new releases will see a price drop within a year.
@@LukeWatts85 agreed but id bump that number up even further. With elektrons Model series being only 300usd other companies are gonna have to figure out pricing.
65 and first groovebox... cool!
All those requests, tho... for a first-time groovebox user, those are super precise asks. Good for you all around
I feel like the subject of Song Mode was avoided..
Mike Logan Seems like scenes are the closest thing we get?
@@seantubridy3242 Yes Scenes are used to create and trigger various song sections.

I was just about to pull the trigger and order one tomorrow morning but NO SONG MODE stopped me cold.

Thank you to all of the commenters here! I would buy this in a heartbeat if it was a real performance tool.
What's song mode??
@@The4thLetter the ability to sequence a full song
I heard, Latest update adds song mode.
@@TheScreamingFrog916 thanks, I’ll check that out
Is there a way to externally sequence the drums and tone engines via midi using different midi channels like in a multi-timbral synth? Also: can you control sound parameters via midi using CC? Thanks
I felt in love with mc101. Still two things remaining unsolved:
1) only 4 tracks (instruments)
2) noway to arrange all scenes into a song, then export it into audio.
For the rest - mc101 been invented by genius people.
Is there a way to access the chord functionality of the MC-707? Is there any sort of mode that will either highlight or lock you to a musical scale?
What about an arp?
AS a tr8s owner I find this more reasonable than the 707. However, at that price point it is almost senseless. I mean tr8s costs 600 and this 500. I would say 400 would be much better
Yeah $399/$799 would be much more reasonable for both.
And for little more you have digitakt...
At 500, most people would just save a little more and end up with a Digitakt I think. I get this is geared more towards live play, but people have figured it out with the Digi. I also feel the 707 is still going to get passed up by the Digi. That needs to come down to around $700. This looks like it should be competing with the Circuit around $300 instead.
@@MarcoZambardi And for half the price you can get a used Circuit. Or you can get an OP-Z used for about the same price as the MC-101.
@@MarcoZambardi Digitakt is over 70% more.
Hi Roland- just read the reference manual and it seems to be missing the section on actually editing the tones in depth. I presume (and hope) this is actually possible on the unit. Thanks!
They want you to get the MC-707 if you want tone editing, or grab a different machine like JD-Xi or Juno-DS.
They overdid it on watering down the lower-priced version of a top-of-its-line product... again. Omitting tone editing was an unnecessary limitation, I say.
@@Jason75913 Yea I agree. If it had tone editing - even with annoying menu diving - it would have been a great greoovebox.
How do you turn on the metronome that was added in update 1.20? I cannot find this information anywhere.
Love this new lil boxes. But $500?! This looks like $299/350.
Yeah, I generally hate to be in the "this costs too much for what it is!" bandwagon, but honestly, can't really help it with this one, but to feel the same. With something like 300e, I'd be seriously thinking about getting one. But with 509 euros, with only 4 tracks, that's quite a lot to pay. Especially when you think about what other gear there are in the same-ish price range: Elektron Digitakt is about 635e, Digitone is 645e, Model:Samples is 439e, the new Electribes are around 400e, Blackbox is about 579e and so on.
Electribe just had a price reduction to $350 here in the US. That means a smart shopper can bag one for $300 or so. Not a bad deal at all.The Novation Circuit is around the same price. I can't see how Roland justifies $500 for the 101 in this market, I predict a price drop in the near future.
@@jasont.9559 Got a used circuit in perfect condition for $200. This should be like $300-$325

Great machine, a lot to do and to learn
Does it have a built in speaker or do I need to carry headphones or speaker everywhere ?
A lil built in mic for recording a quick vocal wouldn't of killed them either.
FunkleGaff OP-Z?
@@QuinnDjinnsQueerGear
Exactly my point. Years after the op1 and still waiting for someone to out do it
FunkleGaff lmao
Op1 speaker sounds like shit. Earbuds are a must, especially as you’re going to tape. It’s really not hard to carry some earbuds around...
@@FunkleGaff Synthstrom Deluge. Kills every groovebox in terms of features, but I have never seen or touched one so I don't know how good the internal speaker is. Same for the OP-Z. I just really like the idea of having a portable groovebox so I fantasize about having the Circuit, OP-Z, and Deluge at different times.
I wish there was a music store besides Guitar Center remotely close to me. Their synth section is absolutely laughable, only 6 synths and drum machines (combined, not 6 of each) at any given time. That's excluding the ridiculously expensive (>$3,000) keyboard synth workstation things.
Can you mute individual sounds of a drum track? If you can not it's a really big deal breaker...
up!
you can in the 707 (loopop's review @26mins ish) so hopefully this can too as they're claiming the only feature difference between the two is number of tracks and the 707 can live sample
@@TEHBILB yes but if you check the manuel, doesnt appear nothing related with mutes modes
Punkotero ah that’s annoying, hopefully they’ll confirm (or release the reference manual) soon
@@TEHBILB i think its no a feature right now, but i hope in the future will be possible
Can you sequence an external midi source with it? Nobody ever talks about this
my question.. how many master effects simultaneously?
Is there a Note Repeat / Arpeggiator type function?
It looks like scatter his their approach to that, and I don't really see myself using that very like I would use a note repeat or arpeggiator
@@bearcatshark Best to have both. And the TR8s actually does have both.
Fantastic product and the format for mobile performer on the go!!! Thx Roland
Roland is back!
Seems like a cool device but the sound samples seem weak. Can you increase the library?
Overpriced landfill makes the circuit more appealing, or on the other hand a good ipad running BM3/Cubasis and some good AU3 plugins will yield much better results and flexibility.
I was going to buy Korg gadget 2 this week. I haven’t really looked into beatmaker 3. I’ll have a looksie before I Buy. It’s good then ? (I’m on an iPad Pro 12.9)
Improvised Altar you’ve given me delusions of grandeur.
phil mac gadget 2 is excellent but beware of the in app purchases as it can start to get expensive, there’s a lot of youtube reviews and tutorials of individual gadgets to research before you buy.
circuit limited compared to 101
@@RUclipsSupportTeams very limited, but diehard Circuit fans would never admit to that, though
So the scenes are like parts or patterns and you jump between them for a kind of song mode? Can you access projects and samples easily on SD?
Yes that's correct. And you can easily load projects from SD.
@@rolandglobal but why mr roland? why no song mode or "scene chain" mode? WHY? W H Y Y O U . D O T H I S?
Is there song mode on this ?
Scenes.
No song mode. You can use scenes, but you have to switch scenes manually.
how do you load the tracks onto the machine?
I see that you are able to save sound onto a card and put it in the synth so I was wondering if is possible to put synth sounds made by the Aerophone pro app out it onto the card to you for the synth so that I can use my sounds with other wind controllers
Thank you
Trying to get into sampling
Underreated product totally.
Is there a way to exchange Projects between 101 and 707? (At least for tracks 1-4) For mobile vs studio use
Yes, one of the presenters did confirm it. The Q: is: if it is the "same sound engine", why not have 2 "Layers" of 4 on the 101 controls?
Do I need anything else with this equipment?
I have an amplifier only
1/Is it possible to use the 101 on its own (when I’m away traveling) to compose and record tracks or would I be better off connecting it to my MacBookPro ?
2/Can I put different beats to a same track ? I’m asking you this because in all the demos I’ve watched they always use the same beat throughout the whole tracks.
Can u mix seamlessly with this like u can with decks as in blend one song created into the next
So scenes are basically the same as patterns?
I'll just wait for the Behringer clone :p

How does it operate with different time signatures?
increase the tempo then slow it dosn even more for interesting grainy sound
This is such a small and smart unit, I hope to win it in the Thomann give away! ;-)

Is there a way to convert a Drumtrack (without Compressor) into a Drumtrack WITH compressor while keeping all the Clips?
i am planning to use my MC-101 with my RolandDJ 707M. Any suggestions as to how this will work? I know that the 707M will control the tempo, but was wondering if there is anything else?

duh
Roland - please hook me up with one of these 😂
Can one of the tracks be a song that can then be remixed?
Can you chain sequences together? I want to play accoustic instruments along with a full song in a live setting
You can in latest firmware update
the M101 is so buggy...for example, if you want take a sound you've create, you have to take it on a clip on another project...but with 1.02 you can't hear any preview of the sound... (we could do it on 1.01...) Another bug : if you load a sound frome another projet with the sound button, you loose all the change you made with the edit parameters... (you do not loose anything if you load all the clip...)
Is there really no sidechain for the bass?
Amazing⚡️
Is there an internal speaker?
I really love that about your boutique series.
Makes me spontaneously use them a lot more than my monologue.
Internal speakers are always trash.
This does not have an internal speaker. There is a convenient front headphone jack.
@@HotStrange I've heard the OP-Z one isn't terrible.
@@HotStrange Not really the point. No-ones ever going to mistakenly record an internal speaker unless its some lofi project. nor would you really use this as a main workhorse for beat creation. This synth is firmly placed in the novelty "chuck in your bag" arena of synths. I think an internal speaker is very useful in this situation, regardless of the sound quality. this is why they still put crappy speakers in volcas.
Benjamin Wooning Martin I just don’t know anyone that really used them. Even if you throw it in your bag, you can throw in some headphones so you can actually hear with clarity what you’re playing.

Is the sequencer on the MC101/707 comparable to Elektrons seq? Trig cond? Or just simple oldfashioned X0X seq?
Fero Povazan in the video for the 707 it there is a part where you can have a ‘mute probability’ which is like the chance trig condition. I understand that the mc101 is the same synth engine, but th reference manual is bad as does not include all parameters for some reason

Yeah. It's polyphonic.
Can you put your own sounds in it??
Yep
Yes you can load sounds via SD or record from your computer via USB.
Seems like a moderately more flexible take on the novation circuit, for 60% more money. I I'm definitely curious to learn more, like polyphony per instrument or channel, or how much flexibility in sound design on whatever built in synth engines? For the price though I feel like you get more bang for buck out of the OPZ or if you can save up a bit longer, the Deluge. Or just save a couple hundred and get the circuit.
Maybe just buy a Circuit or a tr8s...those should drop in Price now
basically, I thought the same thing really. They are really different, but circuit cost much less than mc-101 and can do a lot of things as well.
