  • Single brood chamber management is a process of building up the colony, letting the queen go to town laying eggs and then bringing it all home by reducing back down to one brood chamber. Stage one, building them up!

Did the exactly the same set up with second box. Queen was laying 2 days later in that top box. Going to let them set for 2 more weeks and split the top boxes into 2 5 frame nucs adding a mated queen as well! Thanks for the video!

Really good video. Totally explained how to get setup for single brood management. I am a couple weeks ahead of you weather wise. Our flow is kicking into gear very fast and hard. I have 2nd boxes on now. The bees are back filling with nectar as the brood emerges. I have had to thin some of them down as well. Time shake them down and add the excluder and possibly another super for extra room.

What happens if you put another brood box and they are no quite ready for it??✌🏻

They will still build up into it but leave much of the space below un used. However in worst case scenario if you give them too much room too soon they struggle to keep the brood nest warm and there is brood loss.

So to have a single you really need double?

The way I do it yes...as it is too early to step down to a single and it is best to let the queen let rip laying as fast as she can before going down to one brood chamber.

Love your videos, but I am confused. This seems to not really be "single brood management" I have seen others who only use 1 brood box all year, and only add honey supers, never another brood box. I see your rational for doing it, but the name seems to be misleading somehow. But if it works it works!

There are many forms but this one will build up a bigger colony while reducing the probability of swarming. Choose the method that suits you best.
