We’ve been wanting to try our hand at signmaking for a while now, and what better material to try making it from than recycled HDPE plastic. We came up with the idea of a two-colour sign, so we could engrave into the first layer to reveal the second. This issue with this, is that there isn’t an adhesive that works with HDPE, so we needed to come up with another plan.
To make the two colours fuse together we used heat. We needed enough heat to make sure they were fully bonded, but not so much that the sheets melted and warped. Then we used our Stepcraft D840 to CNC our planet earth sign design out.
What do you think of the finished product? Using recycled plastc for this works incredibly well, and it uses up a lot of waste material in one go. There’s definitely potential here for more projects using this same technique. If you have any ideas you’d like us to try, drop a suggestion in the comments below 🤙🏽

Awesome, inspirational, as usual :) High-fives on hitting 250k subs! All the best from MNL!
This channel makes me want to start a plastic workshop. I find myself looking at stuff all the time and trying to figure out how to make it out of recycled plastic. Also, y’all should put a QR code linking to this video next to the sign so people can see how it was made.
If you get any ideas for how to make a laundry basket without melting it completely, like in the video, then let me know.
11:47 You're not idiots. You're doing good recycling. That art of earth looked cool.
Definitely going to be doing this. Spend 12 months collecting plastic waste. Got my panini makers, small oven and a bottle press. Can’t wait to get going. First is the chopping board. X
USA here...your channel just popped up on my YT recommendations...so cool...guess I need to start from the early beginning vids to see your creativity B4 all the fancy machinery...love your vision for Planet Earth...i now plan to go melt down some milk jugs..these have no business in our landfills...n maybe next beach trip, I'll collect some litter to make something as a "beach remembrance" piece..besides my driftwood...y'all rock..Peace from PDX👍💗👍
Hello! I've just found this channel, and I'd like to tell you two that you are artisans. I'm an artist and artisan myself (primarily a musician, but also a writer and calligrapher, as well as a crocheter and knitter), and the products you make are works of art as well. It's plain to see the love and care that goes into your pieces, and the artistic characteristics you give them just put a smile on my face. Thank you for what you do. :)
Thanks so much for the kind works! 🙏
9:09 YES so great to see that you guys not only responsibly contain the microplastics produced through this process but recycle them again! ♻️ I came here from the short concerned about exactly that issue, because you can’t really tell there, great work as always 💕🙏🏻🌎
That's an awesome sign. Love the text 🤣😁 You guys are an inspiration 🙂
Thanks so much!
That turned out amazingly! Awesome idea doing the two different layers of colors
We’re super happy with how that worked so well!
Great video. I went to your shop hoping you made your sign into a T-shirt I could purchase. Awesome slogan
Thank you for your commitment to the planet and encouraging us all to rethink plastics
I love that vibe, "keep the planet clean it's not Uranus" I'm inspired by you guys that I started a RUclips channel. I plan to make a bulletproof batman batsuit out of hdpe milk jugs
Wow that sounds like one hell of a project!
@@BrothersMake yeah I've been cutting up milk jugs for the past 3 years and have about 300 of them as well as hundreds of grocery bags and dozens of bleach bottles, I have the templates for the batsuit, it's going to be the dark knight inspired design with articulated plates I plan to hold them together with nuts and bolts threaded through tow straps and elastic webbing with yoga mats for backing material and and the aesthetic background fabric will be easy grip anti sliding material in black color that they sell in the housewares department at Walmart that you put in kitchen drawers that keeps kitchen utensils from sliding around.
Something else you can do is use a paintbrush and some acetone, as acetone is a solvent that melts HDPE you can smoothen any rough edges. It evaporates quickly so you don't have to worry about it dissolving the HDPE.
This is so cool! Just watched the video where you made the pens out of plastic. Its nice that i could do that at home. I am an artist and I am thinking of ways to make mosaic stones out of waste. So I for sure will try that! Great work guys!
My name is Jeff from wv when you run your plastic sheets thought the planer does white back board you have in yours help with not grabbing your work piece .. Than you I watch you guys all the time and have tryed a lot of the stuff..
Absolutely gorgeous, amazing. Rocking it guys. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Such a cool idea. Turned out beautiful
Such a great channel 👏 I'm getting into the hdpe recycling and your videos are more than helpful
Honestly, that photo in that post was already enough. This video just adds to it.
Mad props for showing the climbing of the step ladder. It added to the suspense.
I was hoping that that you didn't smooth it out. It would have been nice to give the land portions a rough texture.
Also, if you're daring, you could make 3 layers. The middle layer would be the clouds.
Lovely result! Imagining someday seeing an entire mural made from etched multitone recycled plastic.
Wow this looked so so cool!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on 250k. I love your channel
Have you ever thought of turning clear PET plastic into replacement panes for greenhouses?
It seems the wind blows a pane out of my greenhouse every few months and smashes it into adjacent beds... this is very annoying to clear up. PET panes would save the day.
Also, great videos chaps, keep it up! :)
Excellent work, wow the result is beautiful, thank you, greetings from Uruguay, blessings.
Really creative. Love the finished product.
Thank you!!
I just love watching you guys your just so talented of what you do.
Edit: Everyone subscribe and turn on notifications so when they posted you know
Thank you Ava that’s super kind
@@BrothersMake np you deserve comments like this and deserve 1million and more subs
Great work lads brilliant job and very apt keep the videos coming 👍🏻
Looks amazing lads, and it made me chuckle
That is brilliant! Love the finished product and the message
Thanks so much!
Love this project!
This is awesome! Have a few questions it would be awesome to have answers to...
1. Is there a reason you can't mix LDPE and HDPE when recycling, even for smaller projects?
2. Most home plastic recycling videos use HDPE specifically. Is there a reason there are very few LDPE videos? What makes it harder to use?
I ask because soft plastics recycling was recently stopped in my country and I'd love to have a project using soft plastics I could do at home... and preferably (if possible) one that worked without needing to tell LDPE and HDPE soft plastics apart? I avoid plastics generally so don't bring many containers into my home, but the soft plastics tend to be the ones I can't avoid as easily (packaging with ordered items etc)
Love it!!! Especially the written message! 😂👌🏻
Super cool project. Great idea and process. Mahalo for saving the planet! : )
Thanks so much for watching! Mahalo 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Gorgeous!
You guys are amazing. Happy new year
Thanks! Happy new year!
I won't be able to watch it live, but I am looking forward to the replay!
Awesome! Thanks Eric :)
amazing work guys.
Thanks John!
Great job 🎉 And well done at beating me to it!!
Keep up the effort mates!!
The final result is absolutely STUNNING! As a person who's pragmatic over pretty (though I *do* still love pretty) do you think this layering method is strong enough to build with? Say a shop cabinet or tool workstation out of this in lieu of plywood? If so, it would be a great use of plastic waste, save on lumber costs (financially as well as environmentally), and over time the shop would be aesthetically chaotic, but in a good way!
Oh for sure, it’s crazy strong! No way would those two layers ever come about. Maybe we should try some construction techniques with layering like this
@Brothers Make would love to see you figure out how to use this as a workstation that would be amazing. Can't wait for your next videos. I've been stocking up on plastics and all the other bits you need so I can have a go but my wife thinks I'm going crazy 🤪 😜 lol
Assistindo do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Lindo e sustentável! Parabéns @Brothers Make.
That's an awesome design of Earth. Love the phrase too.
Freaking awesome! I love y'alls videos 💜
Love your stuff!
Thank you!
I think that this is the best project ever.
That’s high praise! Thanks 🤙🏽
I so badly wanna make some material sheets like this for my cnc
You guys are awesome
Great video. Loved the idea.. What did you use to polish the sheet (7:20)? It looks quite shiny🤩
I hope someday the earth will be so green🌍
We hope so too!
fantastic 👍
You guys are awesome I really enjoy your videos and could you let me know what is the black paper you put the plastic in it before you put it the sandwich it space in your heaters
Please can you please tell me what materials are used in the project and where to get it from? I want to try. This is a nice green project. Environmental. Thanks in advance
Sure you could use the CNC to finish off the edges as the final touch, but I think doing it by hand shows the whole project was made by hand. More of a personal touch
That’s what we thought too! Adds a load of character
Amazing
Is it possible to dye bottle lids to other colours
Would a candy hook help with the mixing?
How do you clean all the plastic items before melting? I’m trying to put all my bottle tops in the dishwasher but they always end up upside down and fill up with murky dishwasher water
Try the washing machine!
Do you guys use detergent bottles? They are #2's and have some awesome colors.
Nevermind..I just watched your video saying just that.
would love to see a connectable brick or slat done withe the very basic tools. my imagination says i could visualize home made lego type stuff and making just about anything, including a dog house or shed.
Precious Plastics made a version of that.
You guys should make a table saw sled thing out of plastic that would use a lot of plastic haha
250K well done.
We had no script for this, it was all off the top of our lil' heads!
I love it this would be something I proudly will hang up on my wall 💙🌏
Thank you that’s so nice to hear!
Hi guy, this is great, Im trying find way make plates like this video to cut by CNC and make parts. Can you help me?
Do you find you need a dedicated planer for plastic, or does it matter? Just wondering if the plastic melts onto the knives or the inside of the machine, the chains, the lifting mechanism, etc, so that it wouldn't be usable with wood.
Nope, ours is a standard woodworking machine!
This video make me want, to make an awsome sign to 😁 with the arround 500 lids, i have collected 😏
Can you warm the surface slightly to smooth it?
We did actually test that on a scrap piece and it worked pretty well!
Any idea how to UV stabilize plastic for out door use?
You can include additives for UV stability but they’re mostly virgin
I'd be 100% convinced that you could've made a mold of the continents (with a thin layer to keep them in their relative positions) instead of milling them on the CNC. Just another way to skin the same cat.
Buenas soy de Republica Dominicana me interesan esas maquinarias para trabajar el plastico
which type of other plastics you guys melt with HDPE to get that reselient product ? or it is 100% HDPE
What type of bits do you use to cut HDPE?
You can get specialised plastic cutting bits, but most of ours are standard end mills
Do you still plan on making a video where you include what ventilation you have set up to remove toxic fumes or respirators you wear to protect yourselves from toxic fumes so that folks have some guidance in terms of best practices which address these concerns?
That video is being released on Saturday 🤙🏽
@@BrothersMake I'm stoked!
looks like your rolling taffy 😁😇😷 back to the video 📹 🤣 👌 😜
Hello i really love what you guys do and want some help here
In a word WOW
Thanks :)
I have several HDPE bottle caps with plastic liners that won’t come out cleanly. I don’t know what type of plastic is in the liners. Can these still be used for projects?
Maybe not. There is a good chance that it might be dangerous to melt. Try scraping them out.
You should Like sell books where you explain step by step how a Person can "get into the Business of repurposing plastic" Like you do. I Bet a Lot of creative people would have tons of great ideas
That’s not a bad idea!
Thanks for being an inspiration. Now in one if the dirtiest cities in America and enjoy doing this in my area to show people what they are wasting.
Das ist ja voll Cool
Thank you!
Sadly, I followed the link to your amazon list and the BBQ mats are no longer available. Any suggestions?
Link updated for you 🤙🏽
👍👍👍
Можно строительным феном сглаживать для проведения финальной обработки
I've quickly realized that HDPE is workable much like wood is. Half the tools you're using are usually used for woodworking.
Absolutely!
Sign looks great. The panini press delivers again!
Old faithful! 😅♻️🤙🏽
Because not recicle pet1?
Well. You have cancelled the foot of Italy, the Sicily and the Caspian Sea. But who cares! Sardinia is there. 👍
Our 1mm bit could only do so much!
