Hollywood makeup and special effects artists have gone on record saying they would have an extremely difficult time replicating that suit using the modern materials we have today day like Spandex and Velcro and knowing the technology the film industry had back then they have a hard time believing somebody could make a suit that would move like that in 1967. also a forensic photographer analyzed the footage and the exact same type of camera and lens used to shoot the footage and determined that the creature was between seven and seven and a half feet tall. this guy is used by law enforcement to help them investigate crime scenes.

I think the story is they followed its tracks in pine needle duff up away from the creek, found where it sat and watched them getting reorganized back at the creek, then continued on when it saw them start tracking it.
