Thanks for posting this. Great to see 'jumping offdrive' of Ranji for which he was famous for. I wish there was a clip of Ranji's 'leg glance' ... he was supposed to be the inventor of that shot. Great vide ...
Ranji played 307 First Class Games From Year 1893 To Year 1920 Scoring 24,692 Runs At Average of 56.37 with 72 Centuries and 109 half Centuries He also took 133 Wickets As A Bowler at Avg of 34.59 took Four 5 Wicket hauls
People who are unaware about Ranjitsinghji should read about him on Wikipedia or from any other source. He was a great human being. He made many contributions to Indian Cricket at that time.
Look how small the bat and pads are. No gloves, no protection. Just man vs the monster throwing the ball at great speed! Batsmen were true artists in his time until the 80s.
In Overall Test Carrier of Ranjitsinhji he played 15 Test Matches For England all against Australia From Year 1896 To Year 1902 And Scored 989 Runs At An average of 44.95 With 2 Centuries and 6 Half Centuries His Top Score was 175 Vs Australia As A Bowler He Bowled 97 Balls and took 1 Wicket at an avg of 39.00
Ranji was the best batsman of Cricket's Golden Age and one of the greatest batsmen of all time. You can see that he has marvelous hand eye coordination and footwork like all great batsmen.
pretty sure the last 50 secs of this film are the same as the 50 secs that come after the first time we see the person come in and field the ball in the nets..same footage after both times the guy is seen...if that makes sense...hard to know how hw would go in todays cricket...with that technique? not well i suspect..but if he had been bought up in todays cricket his eye to hand and bat speed would have seen him be as good as anybody in todays cricket IMO...
@@kartikrajsingh1895 They weren't video cameras!!!!! They were motion picture cameras with film running on sprockets. The same technology as silent films, sound added late 20's and vediotape invented much later!! There is film of Queen Victoria in 1897 and the English probably brought the technology to Australia with them.
Isn't he playing t 20 kinda cricket in nets... He neither left one single ball nor he defended the one...,! Just going for big ones on the leg sides.., 😜 😜 Btw quite interesting..!!
Dont underestimate him. He is the first Indian to play test in 1896( even 36 years before Indian cricket board). And he is the first ever player to score 100+ runs(113 runs) in the single session(morning session) of a test match, in fact it was his debut test(that too in 1896, no one ever could think about that in those days). Charles Bannerman has scored 99 runs in a session(in the second session of the first day of the first ever test in 1877), but it was a four hour session. Only two sessions were played in that match - before lunch and after lunch.
Looking at his technique and shots, he would have been a tailender in the modern era. But for that time, it was suited, as he averaged 56 in FC cricket.
He's clearly got an excellent eye and rapid hand speed. What's more all of the shots are controlled. He lacks modern footwork, because the pitches at the time were not conducive to it. Also he's getting throw-downs from half-way along the pitch, so he's having to react quickly to slow balls. It is impossible to say how he would cope today from such a clip.
Are you stupid? Today not even we have ten players who average 50 in test cricket (despite of having flat tracks, bouncer limit, machine made ball which swings very less and full protection), and this guy is playing with a weak wooden plank, without protection and averages 56 and you are calling him tailender.
This is how gully cricket is played now in 2020..after 100 years lot of technique, class, talent, batsmen came but gully has always inspired from ranjit 😂
I think he doesn't need a wicket keeper.. He struck firmly without missing a ball.. He was.. He is legend.. Salute..

RANJI TROPHY is named after this legend
Ranji was a naturally aggressive batsman. Some shots he played off the legs and wrists were a novelty in test cricket's early years

No he did contribute to Indian cricket
His nephew too was a great human being.
His nephew Digvijay Singh Ji saved 1000 Polish kids during WWII
He contributed nothing to indian cricket ,
his legacy is playing for sussex

From Jamnagar 👍👍
He is playing like no 11, don't know why they named ranji after him, he openly opposed development of cricket in India.. Shame..
I have never seen wicket keeper in suit tie with hand in pockets
Amazing 👏🇮🇳

Imagine him facing Curtly Ambrose or Wasim Akram at their best...
Some of his shots remind me of Azharuddin.
Video camera was invented in 1918 then how they took this video in 1897
Actually the first video was made in 1888

Yep, terrible technique, just like the modern tailender Steve Smith.

Lol 😂
Better than Virat Kohli
Obviously. Modern cricketers have bats with sweet spots in the middle for hard hitting, pitches treated and tons of protection, unlike those days.
Lol he has terrible balance

played for england shame
Ranji was, is and will be the greatest cricketer of all time

Bowl a full pitched out swing and hes out terrible posture for a batsman no wonder india never beat a big team back then.
