This film doesn't have a single wasted frame. It is a textbook example of tight editing and pacing. Every once in a while a film comes along that expands the possibilities of the medium. Well, the original KING KONG is one of those seminal movies. It pushed the envelope in so many ways.

Even now that film is extraordinary.
Think about how sound-on -film was only 5 years old. The film's musical scoring. The stop motion animation. The scene when Kong escapes in theater...it's gripping and the illusion is complete because it looks and feels so real.
Of course many film buffs know it changed the life of a young man who saw it: Ray Harryhausen.
By far, the best representation of Medusa ever seen was Harryhausen's.
Eiji Tsubaraya loved King Kong, and it inspired him to do Japan's first monster movie (Gojira).

About 45 years ago when I was a little lad, this film scared me witless. To this day it beats any remake hands down.
The original KING KONG is such a remarkable film on so many levels, even 90 years on it hasn't ceased to amaze. No remake will ever come close to matching it. The 1976 and 2005 versions did nothing to advance cinema the way the original pushed the envelope in 1933.
Still in my top five films of all time, a true classic. And Fay Wray was such a cutie!!
Very informative documentary, full of quirky and interesting behind the scenes stuff. Your commentary is delivered in a faltering style with un natural pauses which has an hypnotic and sleepy effect though.
KK is historically recognized as a groundbreaking film, an explosion of talented technical and artistic crews doing their best collaboration together; and as a postwar miracle that allowed economically depressed audiences an escape into a world of indulgent fantasy, sharing many parallels with 1977’s “Star Wars”. For its music score alone, at the advent of sound in film, it is shining and remarkable.
If you notice, there are 10 action scenes in the movie and that is impressive for a stop motion picture.

A welcome return for one of RUclips's finest reviewers. Btw I still never cared for the remake in 2005 but loved Kong Skull Island...just my opinion.
What did you think of the 1976 re-make of Kong?
@@Gerry1of1 I didn't think it was as unnecessarily bloated as Peter Jackson's effort. I liked Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin but it was a pity there wasn't the odd dinosaur in there to spice things up...all we got was a giant rubber snake ? I guess De Laurentiis didn't have the budget available when making the film. I'd probably watch it over the 2005 version though as its simply not as long winded.
The thing about the 2005 version is more of the dinosaur and other creatures on the island that were not in the original. I just wish Jack Black was not in that it made it less convincing.
The 2005 remake was the best one. 1976 was awful. 1933, the acting was incredibly corny.

Kong's fur movements were a "mistake." When Willis touched the model his hair moved. However I've always thought it was the wind...and i still do :)
I have the director's cut, but I think the final trim helps give Kong a more sympathetic place to stand. It was too brutal, all most Toxic Avenger brutal.
Kong Island: someone, possibly long ago, built a huge wall to keep all those scary monsters back there in the deep jungle and make safe the peninsula where the villagers live. Dinosaurs..... a giant ape..... who knows what all else is back there? So why not? Let's build a giant ape size door in the wall. Makes perfect sense.

Growing up in the 1970's I would look forward to Thanksgiving not because of the food but to mainly watch it on TV WOR TV CHANNEL 9 In New York city. First would be this then I think son of Kong then Mighty Joe Young. The next day would be various Godzilla films.

As a kid, this was my favorite movie. It came on only once a year on a local TV station ( channel 9 ) and would play 3 times on the weekend. My friends and myself would watch it all 3 times. Amazed..we would try and figure out how the film makers achieved it. Even with your fine explanation of the back story behind this.. it still is amazing that the visuals and story line captured the essence and visual of this film in 1933. With all the incredible special effects garnered in all our modern films, there is something honest and organic about King Kong that I have yet to see in these modern epics. It had a magical and mysterious quality and an extroardinary adventure tale that even today, captures the imagination. The film makers also paid close attention in developing the human characters and their interaction with each other that hightened the movie's effect. I liked Peter Jackson's interpertation of his King Kong ambition ( a brilliant film maker )...but it I felt it lacked the simplicity and lo fi visual effect that the original had and may have carried it a bit overboard ( but again, brilliant film making! ). Let's also mention the beautiful Fay Wray..eye candy......
It's been a few years, but I think it's time to watch King Kong again....Cheers and thanx for the video...
The idea that Cooper wanted a 'real gorilla' to fight a 'real Komodo dragon' is disgusting beyond belief.

When I was young in the 1970's, this movie was a traditional Thanksgiving Day broadcast in the NY area on WOR-TV channel 9. I never understood why, lol. They would also show Mighty Joe Young, and Son of Kong, and King Kong Joins the Rockettes. Okay, that last one is made up.

Jerry Lewis wanted to do a sequel: "Court Jester Kong."
Saw it first at 10 years old on channel 56 from Boston around 1970, and it's been a favorite ever since. I certainly wouldn't take anything away from Ray Harryhausen (Jason and the Argonauts, wow!), but Willis O'Brien's work is as good as anyone since.

SFX Trivia: In the scene where Kong is looking into an appartment building, during his rampage in NY City, he was projected onto a fresnel screen behind the model windows... The screen was mounted on a vibrating device. The constant, rapid motion would hide the surface texture of the screen which, if seen, would have ruined the necessary suspension of disbelief. A very clever solution indeed!

Jack Driscole was not the hero of Carl Denham's film, but the first mate of the ship they travel on. James Flavin plays the second mate and has a long career as an Irish character actor and policeman or detective. He in fact appears in MIGHTY JOE YOUNG in 1949
Wallace actually Completed the 1st Draft but Cooper told him to Make Changes. He died before starting the 2nd draft.

The original King Kong looks horrible on Blu-ray. It’s not remastered and not extended. The recreated spider pit scene is missing. What a ripoff?!?!

The 33 version had terrible acting and terrible dialog. But it was a great movie. Jackson's remake in 2005 had good dialog and good acting but it didn't have the same impact as the original. And we won't even MENTION the 1976 version which was painful for me to watch.
Before its release, I suspected the '76 Kong would suck as soon as I heard Dino De Laurentiis was producing it. I remember the audience hooting at Charles Grodin's hammy performance. I hated the movie.
I'm going to respectfully disagree, the character and script drive the original, Peter Jackson doubled the run time without adding anything to the story, he turns Dehnam into a crook, Driscoll into a completely different character and Ann into a depressing unlikable woman who drags down the story art is of course subjective
There is no "T" in Schoedsack.

I highly doubt Cooper's friend, Douglas Burden, was the first human to encounter a Komodo dragon (on Komodo Island), but rather the first 'WHITE' man, to have. Love the story of King Kong, and the 'ORIGINAL' picture 😁!!! The '35 (even though Mr. Baak says '33) sequel "SON OF KONG" wasn't bad, but definitely wasn't the first film!!! The '76 version?? 😅😂🤣!!! On to the '05 version. Very watchble, and NOT BAD👍, but it's NOT, THE ORIGINAL 😉!!!!
I believe, Fay Wrays' aunt and uncle had a 'summer' house, on the southern end of the island, I grew up on (and still reside). It's on, the South Jersey coast.
ATTENTION RICK BAKER and PETER JACKSON:
Did you pay close attention to what the man said? It's what I always loved about the character. Most fans and filmmakers don't get it. Kong was not just an ape. He was a MONSTER! Peter Jackson sorely missed that point. He was NOT just some ordinary overgrown gorilla who eats berries and picks his butt. He's a unique, somewhat humanoid ape-monster that stands upright and shows humanistic expression. Rick Baker missed that point as well when he made the suit for the first remake. But at least when he wore that boring suit for the film the director ordered Rick to stand upright when he just wanted to play a typical hunched over on all fours gorilla.
King Kong and Annie Dawn Darrow should be together. All true King Kong fans ship them. Any fan that ships Annie with Jack is not a true Kong fan.
This has got 2 be the DUMBEST MOVIE EVER MADE !!!!! But, it's structure is very great, & of course stands up 2 the test of X. U just can't keep down the Kong.

On the 50th anniversary of the films' release, a three-story tall, inflatable Kong was positioned on one side of the Empire State Building, about 2/3rds of the way up. It was there for several days. I saw it from a window of the place where I worked
Back in the 1930's King Kong was as bigger a block buster as like Star Wars was in the 1970's
" He imagined a giant ape on top of the Empire State Building." Not true, originally the Chrysler Building was to be used but the ESB was opened just before the films production and the script was changed.

Now I wonder what scenes were cut from the original movie. I’ve seen where when Kong crashes through the village he stomps on a native, squishing him into the mud. And other viewings cut that part out. I would like to see the entire uncut film, as it’s one of my all time favorite movies. A great movie to watch late at night with all the lights turned out.
From the original film they removed the 'spider pit ' scene ( it showed the fate of those men who survived after kong threw them off the tree into the pit) as it apparently terrified the audience at the first screenings . Peter Jackson added the scene back into the remake . Nice video but the narration was horribly paced. No natural pauses whatsoever throughout making it robotic sounding, actually worse than robotic sounding. But I enjoyed the history lesson of KK but a lot of interesting factoids were not covered.
Produced in 1933, this film truly was a milestone.....industry changing.....amazing in its scope. The musical score was brilliant. For the time, the special effects were nothing short of spectacular. IMO, no remake or sequel has ever surpassed it.

I think we can assume that the one-to-one scale bust of Kong wasn't anywhere near 40' tall, based on all of the photos. More like 15-20' (the latter being an "at most" figure).
The salary of $50,000. for Max Steiner to write the score must be in TODAY's dollars, as that kind of sum at the time would've been way too high. OR...am I wrong about that?
I first saw it in the 70's on a 19 inch black and white tv, the way it was meant to be seen. Tne ones that did the stop motion did a great job, comparable to any of the 60's stop motion movies.
