    Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I saw “Mission Impossible” back at 1996 but I really have some issues. In those days my favorite cinema here in Santiago was San Damián. It opened in late 1994 and it got the most impressive projection and audio systems of that time. No other theater was even close of the experience it offered. There I saw titles like “Clear and Present Danger”, “Toy Story”, “Goldeneye”, “Trainspotting”, “Independence Day” and they look and sound awesome. “Mission Impossible” was a movie I wanted to watch at San Damián but sometimes strange things happen. In Chile, Paramount movies were distributed by United International Pictures (UIP) and decided to “charge extra” to the chilean cinemas for the titles of it’s catalogue. After some negotiations everything was settle but “M-I” would arrive during September of that year. At that same time my parents invite to go to Europe with them that included some days in London. And at a theater near the hotel where we were staying, they were showing the first movie of Ethan Hunt. Instead of running to the theater I though “I wait till I enjoy it at San Damián”. How could nobody told me that the cinemas at the UK were light years ahead of what it existed in South America. Back in my country I got all planned to go the date of the release and… San Damián did not projected it and instead it would be shown in a cinema where one of my closest friends work. He offered me to see it for free so I was back in business. The movie started and… the sound was nothing impressive and the image look dark. Months later I saw the laserdisc version with a proper equipment at a showroom and men, it look incredible. How could these be possible? Well, the projector and audio system of the cinema were very old and they simply cannot offered the quality that San Damián could offer. If I could turn back time I would have go inside of the London theater and enjoy “Mission Impossible” the way it was intended by Brian de Palma. A mistake I cannot forgive myself after all these years. Adiós amigo.

    Just a note… I’m not sure if this is possibly an issue but Dolby Digital and following iterations of the codec (+, TrueHD, Atmos) support dynamic range compression. I’ve found some titles seemed to be neutered in the bass department due to the flag that was included in the audio stream. If the processor’s Dolby DRC parameter was set to auto it would playback with the DRC setting according to the flag on the discs audio stream. I think many titles reverted to using the mid or high DRC flag.
    I turn off all the DRC settings in my Denon AVR but firmware updates sometimes will set them back to their default settings. In Denon/Marantz receivers this is called Loudness Management. If you have one set it to off so the AVR/processor ignores all the DRC flags. If you just set the Dolby DRC manually in the AVR from Auto to None it will default back to Auto after a power cycle.
    Another point on the original Blu-ray was that Paramount chose to only use Dolby Digital and therefore it was limited to 640kbps, the max data-rate of the codec. I can’t remember why Paramount and others didn’t just port the DD+ over but it had something to with the size of data-packets with Blu-ray. Many Warner titles also used the 1506kbps DD+ audio streams on their HD-DVDs but the Blu-rays sometimes got an improvement with lossless PCM or TrueHD.
    HD-DVD could hold 15/30G single/dual layer respectively where Blu-ray was 25/50G. Blu dual layer still wasn’t common so early BDs got the shaft with 25G discs. Still brings back memories of the HD-DVD marketing group claiming 30G was just the right disc size but 25G wasn’t enough and you’d never need a 50G disc… 😂. Anyone remember the fabled 51G HD-DVD. Like Spinal Tap we can go one louder.

    Speaking of Scandinavian releases by Paramount they really messed up the Blu-Ray of The Untouchables by releasing it here back in 2008 without any Scandinavian subtitles. Basically it's the same disc as the UK release. The UHD-BD has proper subtitles, but the included BD is still the same as the one before and essentially not made for this market.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a 1080p or 4K version of MI (or name your favorites) with its original theatrical audio on a one sided laserdisc? Every film would come standard with two discs, one for the film and one for lavish special features. Dream on…

    The only reason I'm keeping my HD DVD for Mission Impossible 3 is that it is the only disc featuring the picture-in-picture audio commentary with Cruise and JJ Abrams. The blu-rays and every release to date only have the audio portion. You would think that by now in the UHD age they would have ported that over but they never did. If I'm not mistaken the blu-rays couldn't carry it at the time because their java-based software wasn't ready yet. Yeah, HD-DVD is a dead format but my player is practically brand new and I can still use it for CDs.

      Oddly there’s a number of video commentaries encoded like that which were left off of later releases. You’d think they’d just include the original video portion as a separate extra on later releases.

    My theory is that the home video division has the remixed audio done in the DVD days on a shelf that just says "Mission Impossible 1 home video audio master" and they've just re-encoded those elements each time, or in the case of the Blu-ray, once in 2006/7. Someone there is too lazy to go into the vaults of the theatrical division and find the original masters used for the prints. Skywalker Sound did the original mix so I wonder if they have it in their archives.
    Either way, these studios are so keen on near fielding mixes that they might deliberately be withholding the original thinking they're doing the right thing. Well if anyone at Paramount is reading this, no, you're not doing the right thing. The AC3 LD is where it's at and represents the original artistic intent better than anything that followed.

    • @cwhitchblu
      @cwhitchblu Год назад +2

      In the early DVD days when newbies relied on TV-audio speakers and cheap junky soundbars there were several titles that caused people to blown speakers in their equipment. So it started to become more common for studios to do home theater remixes with a different EQ curve. Many times this resulted in bass-neutered films. This is why you hear people referring to preferring the LD tracks because many times the theatrical mix was directly ported over to laserdisc.
      Unfortunately the bass-neutering is still happening to this day on some titles. Some of it is due to DRC setting but not always. I know the Master and Commander DVD had some really low LFE but the LFE was filtered on the Blu-ray so it didn’t have anything under 30Hz.

      Oh geez the Master and Commander dvd still is reference grade today. It’s a shame they filtered the LFE on the BD but I think someone found an import version that has it intact.
      I need a higher end subwoofer just for that film and the handful of others that get really low in their LFE that most subs can’t handle. Days of Future Past is one that springs to mind.

    48:22 Hi Spencer. Great video, am sorry its taken me months to get back to it. But with home video release of Dead Reckoning now hitting (what remaining) store shelves. Now seemed the right time. And i wish i watched this when it first dropped as i had no idea about the lack lustre Blu-Ray set. I picked up a used copy of the UK version/edition of the set you're holding as Ive only ever watched MI1 on Laser and MI2 on DVD and man what a disappointment! I lasted the first 7min of MI1 blu ray, before stopping and switching back to my trusted Laser and for MI2 i had to drop the Blu Ray again as there is a very distracting line running down the right hand side of the transfer. Not wanting to risk Image Retention or watch the movie "zoomed in" I ditched the second Blu Ray and went back to my r1 MI2 DVD and was surprised how close it appeared to the blu ray. I saw the set used for just £4 so wasn't a terrible waste but... i had a separate stand alone copy of MI4.G.P. so really, i ended up paying £4 for MI3 as the other three discs will probably not be played again. Really enjoying the video looking forward to the rest of ur thoughts.

      Yeah that’s 1998 so it’s most definitely from the LD master. Pretty much every early Paramount dvd before 2000 is from an LD master if one existed. They all have a very digital and noisy appearance and most when directly compared usually don’t look as good as the LD due to over sharpening and highlighting the master’s shortcomings.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Год назад +3

      Goldeneye is a bit convoluted. The theatrical Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 had much heavier bass which the theatrical DTS didn’t but the DTS had more fine detail and overall bombast. These turned up on their respective LDs and the Dolby heavy bass mix was on the thx first dvd and special edition second dvd. In 2006 for the ultimate edition we got a Dolby and dts track which seemed to be just two different codecs of a 5.1 track that was perhaps the source mix. Then on the Blu-ray we got a lossless hdma 5.1 version which sounds great but it doesn’t have the specific flavor of either theatrical Dolby or DTS.
      All three sound great but sometimes I just want that boomy club mix flavor only found on the Dolby theatrical mixes.
