From www.kevincaron.com - Artist Kevin Caron shows an easy way to repair damaged threads on a bolt or screw ....
Have you ever found that perfect bolt? It's just what you needed, just the right length, just the right thread, just the right head size, and it'll go right where you need it?
EXCEPT there's a bad spot right there on the threads as if something got dropped on it or something hit it and the threads got screwed up.
Well, there's a tool for that!
Depending upon what you're doing, say your threads are out there in the open, you could use your tap and die set and run a die down through there and clean it right out.
But what if it's in a place you can't get to easily? Like a stud on a motor.
There's another way! Kevin Caron shows two thread files. They're hardened tool steel that have cutting threads cut into them. They're just like a die from a tap and die set, but the threads are on the outside.
First you find the right pitch thread by measuring the files up to the bolt you want to fix. Each thread file has eight different sizes on it, so that makes 16 different options in the set.
Go to where the problems is and begin working the file back and forth.
It'll depend how long it takes based on how much damage there is, and you need to keep checking it as you go. You can see how what Kevin Caron has done has helped open the threads with the few strokes he made thus far.
These files sure are handy to have in your toolbox when you have that perfect bolt but the threads are messed up a little.
There are SAE (American) and metric sets available. They make nice accessories for your SAE and metric tap and die sets.
Where do you find them? Kevin Caron has one set from Matco and another from Snap-On, but you can also probably find them at Grainger, Home Depot and Ace Hardware.
Kevin Caron hopes that show you don't have to throw away that bolt - just fix it!

I am nearing 62 years old, I grew up around a car/truck mechanic, I had never seen this tool before. Well done to post this. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
Please stop by my website and check out the rest of my work!
Thanks, Kev! Great info.
I also like the erratic sweat patterns on your shirt! Never saw someone sweat that way, but I dig it.
LOL, glad I could help!
Nice one Kevin. Good tip!
Very helpful tools, first time see this👍
You definitely earned that like. I appreciate the info. I am dealing with a threaded shaft on an old bench grinder that has some messed up threads.
A very simple tool that has saved my bacon several times! Thank you for the like and thank you for watching and posting.
Life savers!
Neat, never saw those before.
Great info, very helpful thank you!
Very welcome!
I have a set of thread chasers that came with the files from sears awhile back.... near life savers!
*sigh* Sears.. feeling nostalgic already.. :(
Thanks gotta get one
Handy to have around!
For the bolts I just use a grinder disk and lightly smooth off the damaged thread.
Have you used this on a bolt hole, I've thought about getting some of these for that than bolts.
Have never tired on a hole . Not sure if it will work like that..
What to do for a thread that's broken smooth off in three places, on top of each other? Can still get the bolt on, but it's rough.
You can try to run the tap through it to clean it up but that will not fix the problem. Look at "timesert"s. They are a whole new way to fix a thread and work very well.
Cool tool. I dont see how it would be any better in a tight space tho.
All depends on the job you are working on I guess.
I use those. In Canada, get them at Princess Auto.
I am looking for bolts that don’t bend. Do you know which types that don’t bend?
Grade 8 are the hardest that I know of. Guess it depends on what you are working on as well.
@@KevincaronSculpture I used M8 grade 8 galvanized bolts. I think I will go with Stainless steel and hopefully it doesn’t bend
Hi Kevin, are you still OK with the AHP 200X Tig machine? I tried the Vulcan Machine from Harbor Freight and it did fine with steel but not so good on Aluminum. I returned it. Would you recommend the AHP machine? It gets really good reviews on Amazon and other sites.
Have been real happy with the AHP 200x. Does fine with everything I ask of it.
Thanks Kevin, really enjoy your channel and have learned many good things from you. Please keep going,.
The threads on the end of a stud are buggered so I can't get a die on -- well, tried and made it worse. Would one of these chopsticks work, I wonder.
Yes it will!! Start lower on the stud and work your way up to the top. Go slow and keep the file true and it will fix the threads.
wont you still have the small space problem using that tool?
Some times yes, it will get to tight to turn and you have to find another way.
Thanks, you look like John Goodman. :>)
You think so?
@@KevincaronSculpture oh yeah. :>)
Ok i cant be the only one that hears kermit the frog???? But thanks for the video.
If I had a dime for every time I have heard that..
Chopsticks. Well it would make piking up slippery foods easier. I think small things might be a bit hard to keep from squishing.
From the condition of your shirt I think I can say your still melting.
Oh yeah!!!!
How hot is it at your shop today? We are at 81 and 38% RH
When we shot that video it was 105f and 40%
That turns just sweating into a workout.
