I recently played this mission, and I’ve noticed that Mr.K was willing to divulge any piece of information voluntarily, he was just incredibly stressed. Notice how he knew about the target. I believe Haines wanted to torture him for his own enjoyment. You can see that his suffering amuses him. He can get away with it and it advances his career. Trevor is a sociopath who enjoys the suffering of others but also he has principles. I kind of doubt he had sympathy for Mr.K, but who knows. Also I think Trevor, not only because of blackmail, worked with the FIB to help Michael, like Franklin, and to get Brad out of jail.
Yeah even on the drive to the airport he straight up says he would have told Trevor anything, and Trevor admits h3 knew that and that torture is more of a fetish than a legitimate way to retrieve information from someone. It was a pretty deep cut politically after america famously torturing captives in the same ways for information we never got
I have an amazing idea for this stuff: first we get the information out without anything physical or mental because torture isn't effective for gathering info. After the info is given, THEN they should be tortured (if they did something horrible)

This whole concept of the mission is what makes GTA V one of the greatest games of all time. Yet, if there was a list of horrid & darkest missions this would be top 3! Good content Professional!

This is a very dark and disgusting moment in the game but also a powerful one. I think he was trying to talk about the overall message instead of glorifying the actual torture.
waterboarding is probably the worst torture. It inflicts psychological damage and innocent people who were waterboarded when interviewed later have constant nightmares, depression, suicidal ideation, etc even 10 years after being tortured. The GTA scene left a few details out of a real waterboarding but IIRC there are some videos on RUclips that explain the complete process and why it's so cruel.
You gotta appreciate how Trevor's incredibly correct when it comes to torture though lol, it doesn't work, it's just there for sick people to get twisted enjoyment.

By the Book actually censored the torturing part in Japan Version. I’m surprised this part doesn’t get GTAV banned in my country but GTAIV just because of the Prostitute and Dave scene at the beginning.
Despite the dark theme, at this moment I really got the sympathy for Trevor first time playing: letting mr. k leave and not getting dragged by someone being abusive of his resources, it just clicked me and got me to understand it's character a bit more.

The torture is brutal, but it is not the darkest scene. "Something sensible" is much more dark seeing Trevor rolling around on fire slowly dying and the last thing he sees is Michael betraying him once again. That scene still haunts me to this day.

Waterboarding is considered Psychological, because its just fear that being employed, theres no real danger of hurting or killing someone. It just seems like it to the victim. So its a loophole in the International conventions. They lump it in with sleep and sensory deprivation, which are also "legal". Doesn't make it right. But thats why they use it. Doesn't leave visible marks.
Waterboarding can actually cause brain damage due to the water that gets into the lungs which starves it of oxygen, by far it's still unethical up in the same league as cold rooms.

The mission failed cutscene with Trevor is foreshadowing. Despite being non-canon, this shows that torturing Mr K was an evil intention created by Steve Haines. Trevor's right, Mr. K was an innocent people who was being accused as a member of the terrorist by the IAA. He has no criminal records, he's working as a home theatre technician in Morningwood.
