I rarely comment in videos, but I have to this time because I am very grateful for your informative, concise, honest, intelligent and present assessment of the dandruff issue. Respect, thank you.
You don't know how thankful I am for this video. I am suffering from dandruff at the moment, and bless thy Gods, I stumbled upon this video. Your explanations were very clear and I understood every part.
My 11 year old daughter and I both started suffering itchy flaky scalps for about a year now and we've been trying to manage it incorrectly, apparently. I've seen a lot of derm videos on dandruff but Dr Ellis's video really caught my attention because I just like the way she explains things - we both started using a dandruff shampoo similar to nizoral that we like and use a few days a week and we now have flake free itch free scalps. Thank you so much Dr Ellis, you're awesome
Thanks so much for your content. I listened to influencers and coworkers who were saying that if you have oily hair you need to "balance" your scalp by going long periods of time without washing it b/c it's an over-washing issue. Learned my lesson as I ended up with an awful seb derm situation that required prescription steroids to start to heal. Took mnnths and months to really get it under control. The lesson? Only listen to derms - I should have known better...
Yep. I have curly hair and tried to stop washing everyday per the hair stylist. Nope had to use dandruff shampoo and have to wash everyday to maintain no itch. Luckily didn’t get bad enough to have a prescription.
I was hoping you would mention apple cider vinegar! I heard about that many years ago. Mix one part apple cider vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle and apply on your scalp and let sit for 20 minutes or so before taking a shower. Then wash your hair as normal. It worked! It was amazing. I'm sure it won't work for everybody but that's my go-to now.
Well she's a doctor, usually they only rely on medication. I have heard of the apple cider with water. I'm so tired of my itchy scalp and dandruff. One thing I did learn today is to wash my hair more often. I was doing it 2x a week and it was becoming uncomfortable since I work out.
@@yoasali7952 Ironically, my husband is a Dr also LOL. He is obsessed with vinegar and what it can do. Try it! Just let it sit on your scalp for 20 min and wash it out. I do like to blow dry my hair after to get the flakes out, but it works! They just keep the routine up for a couple weeks.
I have a sensitive itchy dermatitis scalp, folliculitis, and very coarse thick wavy salt and pepper hair. I just tried Superzero solid shampoo for flakes and itches and it made my scalp feel less itchy. It also made my hair shiny, soft, and bouncy. Love it so far!
This is a great video. Id recommended people see a dermatologist. I notice many general practitioners just assume it’s fungus and prescribe that ketonazole shampoo, I’m a home care nurse and see it all the time. When my son was younger I took him to the dermatologist and found out it his was psoriasis.
@@a.r.1113 I’m sorry I’m just seeing this now that there was another reply. I can’t remember what specific medication he was prescribed. It was a medicated shampoo though that was only avail from a script. When he was a teenager he also had bad acne so the dermatologist ordered Accutane which stopped the acne and significantly improved the psoriasis to the scalp. Occasionally he gets a skin flare and for that he has triamcinolone cream that the the dermatologist prescribes. Hope this helps somewhat
Most of these products are unavailable in the U.K. we mostly have to use head and shoulders but I’ll seek out the ones you recommend . I’ve had dandruff all my life and am now 65 with no reprieve. I always wash my hair with dandruff shampoo immediately before going to the hairdressers as there’s nothing worse than having a fancy colour/ blow dry when the scalp is not perfectly clean.
After years of trying different shampoos/methods of getting rid of my dandruff as well as being sucked into various other treatments, this video has been a breath of fresh air! I was convinced that washing my hair too much was a bad thing but, after this video, I've realized I've probably not be washing it enough! I've bought myself a good anti dandruff shampoo and will aim to wash my hair more often and see if that helps. Thank you so much!
I have fine greasy hair and i wash my hair every day which i first heard from a dermatologist that people with super fine hair should do. The amount of people on the internet who are not doctors that regularly attack me for it and try to tell me that “you need to train your hair” is actually crazy. It became such a misconception that i don’t think it will ever be debunked in people’s minds 😂 Glad u found what works for you :)
I have found that regularly exfoliating my scalp, about once a week, really helps! I'll use freshly ground coffee beans, and more recently, baking soda. It's quite amazing.
I've also used coffee grounds to exfoliate my scalp, and it worked for a while but not good enough. Then I started with baking soda mixed with shampoo and I still do that and it works so well for me, but I only do it like 2 times a week. I've also started using a Neem oil shampoo that has calmed my scalp down so much that I love it. Neem oil is really good it also promotes hair growth. Definitely a good DIY solution.
I have severe dandruff I used bunch of these product and doesn’t help, until I change my diet less sugar less carbohydrates also started eating yogurt with probiotics
Ive been dealing with seb dermatitis for decades now. Took me a long time to accept that it’s a chronic issue. Regular hair washing definitely helps. Mine always starts to act up the longer I wait between washes. It can be annoying bc I’m dying my hair now to cover grays and most dandruff shampoos are pretty harsh. I think selsun blue works great but the smell is horrible. It permeates everything. Used to love t sal but it’s become impossible to find.
I use the Nizoral salicylic acid shampoo - it’s nice, has tea tree too, smells good, doesn’t fuck up my hair. You might like it! It’s their psoriasis shampoo
Have you tried the Vanicream anti-dandruff shampoo with zinc Pyrithione? The only one I've been able to find without fragrance and other irritating ingredients!

So I am on my journey to finding a shampoo that doesn't give me hives or activate my asthma while helping my dey scalp.
Great, concise, practical. Thank you. 1 thought: I have been told that it is very important not only to wash your hair often and properly… getting product and exfoliation to the scalp… but also to dry your hair, especially at the scalp, thoroughly, every time. One question: Do you have any recommendations for a hair conditioner that will support a healthy scalp routine? So many of the products I have reviewed have the very ingredients that set us up for scalp-clearing failure like shea butter and coconut oil ( not malassesia-safe).
I rarely comment on videos, but sister you deserve my comment ! Coz you tell me that how to use the right product i know all of them but not to know how to use them ! Now I will atleast leave the selsun blue atleast for 5 minutes !
I have seb derm and I found that when I eat highly processed foods it makes it flare up. But when I don’t eat processed food then my derm essentially disappears. My scalp isn’t itchy and I don’t have to use a dandruff shampoo.
I have seborrheic dermatitis and used prescription Nizoral for years. It was literally the only thing that worked. My condition did eventually improve and I can now use OTC shampoos. I actually have found Derma E's scalp relief shampoo to be effective for me.
I’m glad to hear your symptoms got to the point where you can use OTC products. I have had seborhea dermatitis for almost three years I’m seeing a Derm and using Rx shampoo and some other treatments. The products are so harsh on my hair and my scalp still itches something awful.
@@mweinheim7911 Yes, the itching is awful. I would sometimes scratch until my scalp bled. I used the prescription Nizoral for about 10 years I think before things got better. Not sure what changed for me, but I'm glad something did!
I've tried nizoral. It didn't work. Then selsun blue worked a little but in the long run I noticed my flakes were coming back. Then currently I'm using kerastase symbiose, and so far it's working. Just use it everyday.
My hair being incredibly curly, thick, and coarse is difficult to wash thoroughly, but ive learned the value of rinse and repeat. My scalp past my hairline is clean, its much much easier to get the shampoo further back around the crown. And it has ended up saving me a lot more shampoo than just meticulously sectioining and coating every square centimeter of my scalp while also doing a more thorough job at the end of the day.
I have dandruff and i been using the head & shoulders itchy scalp care shampoo and conditioner. So far i feel like it is working. I have less dandruff than before. Can't wait till i have 0 dandruff.
Have started to use this Head and Shoulder itchy scalp care shampoo too for about 2 days and it seems to reduce my flakes but itchiness still quite bad. May I know how long should I use to see the effect of not itchy as I wash my hair daily. Thank you.
I’m in my 60s I had dandruff most of my life till I tried a recommended white vinegar treatment. It was recommended to soak your scalp with the vinegar wrap your head with a towel before bed and rinse in the morning. Well I didn’t go that far but left it in for a couple of hours, I don’t remember if I needed a second application but I virtually have no dandruff now.
I believe I started having dandruff as early as before 6th grade in school. I've been using this particular anti-dandruff shampoo for at least 18 years now. Whenever I tried using regular shampoos (idk why, maybe just to try how it will work on my hair), at least a week after, my scalp gets itchy with white flakes, so I then go back to using this anti-dandruff shampoo again. Just recently, I started to wash may hair every other day because they said (from some people I know and from those videos I have watched) you really don't have to wash hair everyday. After 1-2 weeks, my scalp started getting so itchy. Went back to washing my hair everyday again and now it feels better. My hair gets oily after a day and I guess it's also because of where I live that skipping hair wash is really a no-no.
Yep. I have been using Head & Shoulders every day for almost 40 years. If I do not wash my hair every day, dandruff comes back. I can alternate in a different shampoo a couple of times a week, but definitely Head & Shoulders for the most part. The whole "oily scalp training" is ridiculous. As I have said before, if this were true, people with an oily face could not wash their face daily and lessen their oil production. Absolutely not going to happen. Oil glands and their production have nothing to do with shampoo or soap.
I love long hair and had bad dandruff as a child plus eczema. My parents kept cutting my hair screaming at me for being dirty and pouring Sea Breeze all over my head until i cried from pain. When i was a teen I started using Head and Shoulders and Mane and Tail. It worked
I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp and face diagnosed by doctors. I have super oily skin. I'm so fed up with beauticians when I go to get my eyebrows waxed telling me I need to use more oil and moisturise more because they think it's the same as dry skin or psoriasis. Mine is caused by the opposite as these, it gets so much worse when I add more oil. When I wash my hair every other day with anti-dandruff shampoo that's the best for keeping it at bay
Yes, this is absolutely a great video and it was very ELI5. I use Keralyt5 as a pre-shampoo and then Nizarol to finish up. Holy hell it has honestly helped. IMO those two in combination of each other would solve 95% of the problems out there
Yes, and not enough people talk about it. I suffered from chronic dandruff for over 10 years and is was so bad it was affecting my eyebrows, around my nose, and behind my ears. I tried various different remedies but they only treated the dandruff temporarily. I then bought a showerhead water filter (you can buy for like $30 on amazon) and noticed the difference immediately. The flakes slowly started to go away as my skin started to heal. The redness and inflammation on my face were gone. Both my skin and hair feel softer and firmer. Highly recommend for anyone suffering from any skin condition.
As I have aged my scalp oil has reduced, and I now can get away with using Dove dandruff shampoo. It's milder and doesn't smell nasty. I have very fine hair, and washing often makes it dry and damaged. I am currently washing 2x a week with the Dove dandruff shampoo and am having good results.
At the end of the video you mention there are conditions that can mimic seb dermatitis. I think this might be where I am. Can you elaborate on what those are? Thanks!
About 30 years ago I remember my head was really itchy in class, I went to town scratching, a huge pile of flakes 3 times, the teacher thought it could be lice, I had a buzzed head, I had acne at that time. My dermatologist, tol me to wash my head with T/Gel
I’ve had to use a shampoo with coal tar, since I was a teenager. Those are the only ones that relieve the itching (which gets worse in the summer, I blame my thick hair and the Florida heat and humidity lol). I don’t notice the smell for long, on my hair (most brands, I’ve tried one generic that smelled strong for so long).
My dermat had prescribed me 8x shampoo and it worked wonders. I have an oily scalp and crazy dandruff and I had even done prp treatment for 4 months. Now i have very mild dandruff at times but my scalp does get oily in 2 days. My brother and dad used it and it worked great for them too. There are not side-effects to it. I have been using it for 4 years now. P.s. I am from Mumbai,India which means i live in a very humid and pretty hot climate most time of the year.
⚠️ I wished nutrition aspects were discussed in this video. If you’re not eliminating the root cause of the fungus’ food, you’ll continue to have dandruff. The right diet can permanently starve the fungus.
I've been on a meat-only diet for over 6 months. Dandruff is still there. Sorry but it's not that straight fwd. Maybe for candida in the gut this works, but on skin... Yes, cut sugar - it's one of the best things you can do for overall health. But it's not a silver bullet when it comes to treating dandruff :P
Thank you. It's a very informative video and I love the way you presented over-the-counter options. Can we apply these shampoos when using monoxydil sprays for hair loss.?
You’d think having the oil on your scalp wouldn’t attribute to your dandruff at least in my general opinion ❤ thank you for this video! What do you think about Sulfur? I’ve used a sulfur treatment recently, let me know what you feel about this.. 😅
It is really about trial and error and the only shampoo that works for me Is Nirozal. I have tried the others (mentioned in the video and they do nothing) so sticking with Nirozal personally 100% works the best. I do alternate with the T-Sal Salicylic Acid and a good condiioner at ends only. 100% gets rid of the tiny flakes. If I do go a couple of days without shampooing I will use a clarifing shampoo, rinse well and go in with Nirozal let it set for 5 mins and come back with conditioner on the ends. Works like a charm.
tried to use selsun blue to help w/ dandruff and kept it on for 2 min at a time and noticed my scalp turning red and then eventually had acne like bumps in different parts of my scalp. Anyone else have this problem? went back to using head and shoulders but its not really working so will try other treatments now 😬
Not sure what I have but I wash my hair with a comb and shampoo almost everyday, its always 2 inches or shorter. If I were to run my fingers through my hair it would start snowing and I combed it for 5+ minutes and the flakes wouldn't stop. Also noticed its in my eyebrows and I never had this problem until like 3 years ago when I was 14.
Read about bone broth to increase gut health, read about probiotics and prebiotics, someone just commented to brew organic cinammon strain and spray some in your hair
I use orégano oil capsules to combat any kind of stomach infection extremely effective I bring that with me when I travel 3 pills 3 times at day if the infection is severe, read about oregano oil for scalp
Read about Cándida bacteria and the skin and hair problems that causes, that could be the cause of dandruff, I do develop bacteria Cándida easily, that bacteria nourishes with sugar I believe
I noticed, My scalp produces too much oil and when I don’t wash my hair every other day and combing my hair atleast 3 times a day, my dandruff gets really bad in clusters.
Another video that recommends ways of treating the symptoms of dermatitis. How about something to get rid of the causes? What are the causes exactly? Is it the food we eat? The stress? I swear nobody knows anything when it comes to skin conditions. Everybody recommends ways to keep it at bay. Is that the way to solve a problem?
@@DrSamEllis Oh i'm not a conspiracy theorist, if that's what you're implying. Just saying i've had seborrheic dermatitis for 20 years (only mild symptoms fortunately) and no dermatologist knew anything back then either. Way to make progress!
Now how does this work for ethnic hair? Because I tend to have patches in certain places. It’s not an all over scalp issue. But I have kinky, curly, type 4 low porosity hair. It takes a good week or two before my scalp becomes oily. My hair is categorically drier than other types and most shampoos are EXTREMELY drying and make my hair extremely difficult to manage on wash days. I do notice a large increase in the number of dry patches when I use oils on my scalp so I don’t use them.
I use Selsun Blue, and as you said it’s recommended to use 2x a week. But we should wash hair often and I do everyday or every other day (depends if I was active or went out). My question is what’s “normal shampoo”? Can I use H&S? Or a clarifying shampoo (which shouldn’t be used daily too)? I don’t know if they are too strong and I’ll end up damaging my hair more. Please give specific type or brand of shampoo recommendation for “normal”. PS: I have dandruff and experiencing hairfall.
I have noticed that mine gets worse when my hair stays for too long, like when I wear a hat and my head gets sweaty. The Nizoral salicylic acid shampoo helps.
Thank you for such clear helpful information!! My dandruff seemed to disappear for about 5 years and is making a resurgent. I live in a very dry climate and started washing my hair only once a week during that time. That seemed to help a lot but for the past year it seems to be back. I am disappointed I have to wash it everyday...haha...I might have to cut it short again... My girls aged 6-12 have the scaling still on their head, (like cradle cap). Are these shampoos safe in their skin? Any recommendations for kids?
Can you advise on some safe styling methods for people with seb derm? My hair has always been really thick and frizzy which I used to take care of but since getting seb derm I haven't been able to use conditioner or styling products and my hair has become super dry poofy and frizzy. (To clarify I don't use the medication on my hair just on my scalp.) I know it doesn't sound like a serious problem but it's been pretty difficult on my self-esteem. Would love your input!
Thank you! Great video I have dandruff and I use mustard oil - is this ok? I wash it out by putting Nizoral on my scalp and Keratase on the rest of my hair. Please suggest! Thank youu
You seem to misunderstand how challenging it is to eliminate dandruff. It's not as simple as showering more often; in fact, frequent washing with shampoo can strip away essential oils, causing your scalp to produce even more oil, exacerbating the problem. To combat dandruff effectively, consider making dietary changes such as reducing your overall fat intake and limiting carbohydrates. It's also important to balance your showering routine-avoid showering too frequently or too infrequently. Natural remedies like yogurt, honey, egg yolk, and oils are often ineffective and can even worsen the condition. Intermittent fasting can help reduce dandruff significantly, and ensuring you get plenty of rest is crucial as well. Vitamins such as vitamin D are effective and beneficial, although you should avoid them if they come with omega 3 fatty acids like cod liver oil, which can feed the fungi causing dandruff. Stay clear of shampoos, including anti-dandruff ones, as they can cause irritation and dryness. Cold showers can be beneficial, especially if you exercise regularly, which also seems to reduce dandruff. By adopting these practices, you can manage dandruff more effectively.
Started this problem before pandemic hits. Tried cream first but did not work. So I went to different dermatologists, prescribed shampoos but just getting worse. Finally, had one dermatologist prescribed clobetasol scalp application, and after a week, seborrheic dermatitis all gone. So I used Head and Shoulders as shampoo, but after a month not putting the steriod I can see it's coming back. I just want to know if I will use again the clobetasol? Coz some doctors said to stop using it's not good for long term use.
If I use these shampoos, what conditioner do I use. I find that I still need to use conditioner as my hair gets tangled without it, but I’m scared the conditioner just nullifies the job of the shampoo.
10/24/2023 8:42 PM. Can you use a conditioner on your hair after rinsing off the dandruff shampoo? Is regular shampoo used at all. I am not clear on the how to and when to process. Thank you, Mary
Is it safe to use while breastfeeding any or all of these products. I am 4 months postpartum, and my scalp is back to itching, redness, huge flake patches, pain, on top of my hair falling out. It’s very painful, I will try washing my hair everyday for two weeks. I was trying to do the. I washing method but my scalp hurts and itches way more
I have a wholefoods vegan diet and have heavily been focused on my gut health. The medicated shampoos hasn't touched it. It's worse especially when wet :(
My trouble is at first the antidNdruff shampoo works for a while and then my hair get use to it and then it comes back. Recently it has been getting worst, to the point where I think I have dry scalp bc it’s just a patch and it’s only on my right side and my left side is clean. I can’t afford to go to a dermatologist so I was just wondering what else to do? I have tried nizoral and nizoral psoriasis, also selsun blue

Have you ever tried head and shoulders clinical strength? It works miracles for me.
@@Perfectly_Cromulent351 The active ingredient (Selenium Sulfide) didn't work for my scalp issues, unfortunately.
Thank you Doctor. I’m suffering from it. I went to dermatologist, had biopsy and have this condition plus
I changed my nutritional habits and I eliminated dandruff
Great video. Can u do a video for dry hair and scalp, please.
I love long hair and had bad dandruff as a child plus eczema. My parents kept cutting my hair screaming at me for being dirty and pouring Sea Breeze all over my head until i cried from pain. When i was a teen I started using Head and Shoulders and Mane and Tail. It worked
Poor kid. Parents can be cruel sometimes without being aware of it.
When I wash my hair every other day with anti-dandruff shampoo that's the best for keeping it at bay
use the shampoo on your eyebrows too and scrub it in...sometimes I use a tooth brush to scrub it in. Not harshly, gently....it really worked for me.
Great video! Very helpful. Beauty and Brains!
Thanks I been 25 years with seborrheic dermatitis
Yes, this is absolutely a great video and it was very ELI5. I use Keralyt5 as a pre-shampoo and then Nizarol to finish up. Holy hell it has honestly helped. IMO those two in combination of each other would solve 95% of the problems out there
Can having hard water also contribute to itchy dry scalp? If so what products would you recommend? Thank you!
Thanks!
Her voice is ASMR 🙃
Does it cost hairloss?
@@angelmaldonado5657I don’t really think a shampoo can cause hair loss .. if it does there’s a ingredient ur not reacting well to
Thank you. Will these shampoos affect my colored hair?.
Yes most likely but it's a small price to pay
My dermat had prescribed me 8x shampoo and it worked wonders. I have an oily scalp and crazy dandruff and I had even done prp treatment for 4 months. Now i have very mild dandruff at times but my scalp does get oily in 2 days. My brother and dad used it and it worked great for them too. There are not side-effects to it. I have been using it for 4 years now.
P.s. I am from Mumbai,India which means i live in a very humid and pretty hot climate most time of the year.
I know you are not hair stylists but do you have advice on products benefit color treated hair?
⚠️ I wished nutrition aspects were discussed in this video. If you’re not eliminating the root cause of the fungus’ food, you’ll continue to have dandruff. The right diet can permanently starve the fungus.
Any suggestions for fungi starving food?
@@suni9625 Cut out sugar Entirely. Then cut carbs to 50gr/day + hydratation.
@@stucifdgdfsg4rt5 for how long?
@@dmarsub Dr Berg has a video about it, he explains all the reasons including diet
Sorry!!. I am suffering from seborreica dermatitis. I think it is important to point out . Thx . Regards from Barcelona
Question!!!
Does picking at the dandruff cause more?
Thanks so much I appreciate this vid so much!!!
Thank you. It's a very informative video and I love the way you presented over-the-counter options. Can we apply these shampoos when using monoxydil sprays for hair loss.?
Is it good to use comb to brush off dandruff or it makes the inflammation worse?
I think scrubbing the scalp with one’s nails while it’s wet clears a lot of the scales that stick down
Thank you very much, this was very helpful
Head and shoulders clinical strength for the hair and aquanil hc lotion for the skin solves everything.
Outstanding video! Thank you.
Also tend to avoid Garnier shampoo... that will dry your scalp out and make it too flakey dry and itchy!
tried to use selsun blue to help w/ dandruff and kept it on for 2 min at a time and noticed my scalp turning red and then eventually had acne like bumps in different parts of my scalp.
I used Medicasp Mexican shampoo available at Walmart and CVS pharmacy and did help to stop the severe dandruff I had
Hi! Such a great video! My question is, does the T/sal tar shampoo smell bad? And/or does the smell linger? Thank you!
True when I don’t wash as often I get more building
Thank you!!! ❤️❤️
I do have dandruff. I buy the zinc pyrithone shampoo for a reset from Redken!
I read hormones from Peri menopause etc can cause issues. I notice it sometimes.
Great question. I was also wondering the same. It’ll be difficult for me to wash daily as Dr is advising in this video.
Normal shampoo- khadi amla and bhringraj
I have noticed that mine gets worse when my hair stays for too long, like when I wear a hat and my head gets sweaty. The Nizoral salicylic acid shampoo helps.

Can I use aloe vera for dandruff treatment?? Please reply mam
Don't consume too much carbs and sugar ... Your scalp will be less oily
Should a conditioner be used along with shampoo??
I used tgel and it seems to make my hair fall out even more than what the dandruff problem is doing, I will try selsom blue

I have dandruff and I use mustard oil - is this ok?
Is Ionil T Shampoo is a good treatment ?
How about the hair loss? Will the lost hair grow back as the treatment goes?
I just recently started seeing dandruff on my scalp which I have never experienced
Normal shampoo for daily use ????
Is their any role of oils like coconut oil to reduce dandruff? Or can oils make it worse
Try to work out often...your scalp needs to moist from sweating.. it will lessen the dandruff.. and stop using shampoo every shower
Very informative! Do you happen to know if the SheaMoisture Hair Care System Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is good for dandruff?

What about people with thick curly hair? What can they use?
If I use these shampoos, what conditioner do I use. I find that I still need to use conditioner as my hair gets tangled without it, but I’m scared the conditioner just nullifies the job of the shampoo.
