She didn't make a new life for herself, she had apparently got cold feet and decided to wait before going through with the wedding. When the man she was to marry got to the church he saw a wedding taking place but could not see the face of the bride because of the veil she wore, in a jealous rage he shot her thinking it was his bride who had run off and married another man. Too late he found out he had shot a complete strangers new bride.
