  • Rode Wireless Go II, wind test performed in windy conditions while riding a bike.
    I set out on a field test to see how the new Røde Wireless Go II performs in windy conditions. I also tested the Røde Lavalier Go. I was really impressed with the wind noise cancellation of both products, and I can certainly recommend them for anyone who needs strong wind noise cancellation.

    In all actuality, you gave a "1" in Setup 2 when it comes to Wind Noise Cancellation and I have to give it a 4, because I've used ALL kinds of Lav and Shotgun mics and NOTHING compares to the test you did. I was just BLOWN AWAY! Couldn't believe how clear you sounded with little to no wind in the background. I'm still amazed. I even watched a vid that showed a guy who did a Lav Mic comparison in a busy city and it was just as amazing! I'm so glad people like you actually do these types of tests. I can't wait to get mine so I can start recording outside where I'll be in windy, traffic noisy types of places. Thank you for this vid!

      Thank you very much. I'm glad that you found it useful. Another wonderful thing about the mic system that I didn't mention is the backup audio that the transmitters record. Came in useful in my latest video "Gravel with Oscar" where the Rode-receiver was not connected properly to the GoPro. I used the backup audio from the transmitter and synced it with the video. So the Rode system really works as a standalone audio recorder... :) Really superb.

      I think you should go for it. It’s a great microphone. The cable (3.5mm) is not that great though. A few times I’ve had to sync audio in post. But since the Wireless Go records to the transmitter it’s not a deal breaker, at least not for me.

      I'm a little late with my reply, as an audio solution attached to an Insta 360 One X2 for Moto vlogging, I purchased the Rode wireless Go. With the receiver attached by a cold shoe mount on the end of the unextended selfie stick clamped to my handle bars. The transmitter in my jacket front top pocket and a Sony LV1 mic with dead cat inside my full face flip front helmet. Voice audio was Good though I wished the mic would pick up more ambient noise ( the exhaust), it probably would have done this better had my helmet not been so noisy, the seam of the flip front and a comm system do cause a bit of drag. Unfortunately I lost the receiver when it flew off at speed, I really should have secured it with tape or something. In an effort to save money and have two mics/transmitters, one for exhaust note or pillion I bought the cheaper Synco G2 A2 wireless system. While it performs well stationary or at slow speed, at higher speeds it was clipping/disconnecting, I thought this was down to wind. However It became clear on a road scarified for re tarring that it was vibration which was the cause of the disruption. I never had this issue at any speed with the Rode and so will be purchasing the Go 2. Video of both the Rode and the Synco are on my channel if you're interested, although by now you probably have already bought the Rode for yourself. Hope this helps anyone looking to do the same.

    • @Maydeus
      @Maydeus  3 года назад +1

      Thank you. I'm glad you liked the video.
      For cycling purposes I don't think it's worth buying the Lav Mic as you'll get the best quality straight from the transmitter itself. Having said that, I do however have one lav for each transmitter so that I can use it in other settings and I absolutely love the lav mics from Rode.
      I don't know enough about the original Wireless Go to give you a well grounded answer, but just the fact that the GO II have two microphones would be a deal maker for me. That way you can mic up yourself and a friend and do interviews or chats while riding and both will be heard perfectly.

    I am thinking about buying wireless Go II and this video helps a lot. Thank you!!
    Could you answer me some questions? I see you attached the transmitter very close to mouth. What was the gain level? Is it possible to capture whispers under such conditions(windy and same gain level)?

    • @Maydeus
      @Maydeus  3 года назад +1

      I am glad that the video was helpful.
      The gain level was set to “Mid” (which is -12db) in Røde Central and there was no post processing of the audio. In some of the videos I’ve recorded since the test I have had the transmitter further from the mouth and I have been speaking a lot quieter. In my video “Is this the largest ocean[...]?”, I speak pretty softly in one section where I am sitting down and I feel that the audio is still very good and clear. Check it out for reference.
      I don’t usually whisper while riding, but whispering in windy conditions should not be a problem. But, I haven’t tested it so I don’t know for sure.
      Keep in mind though that you can record with a safety channel, so you can capture a wider range.

    • @jestemvfx
      @jestemvfx 3 года назад

      @@Maydeus Thank you for reply!
      I checked the video "Is this...". I can hear breath while riding and it's good enough for me. Was it also "Mid" gain level?
      Could you clarify the safety channel? This function is the one of the reasons why I wanna buy this product but no one explain how it works in details, thus I don't know if it works as I expect. My camera does not have a mic input, so I must rely on onboard recordings. Where is the safety channel audio stored? In transmitter memory or only output of receiver? Since the latest firmware 1.6.0 allows one transmitter to work as a standalone recorder, it's the best for me if it can store the safety channel on it without receiver...

    • @Maydeus
      @Maydeus  3 года назад +1

      @@jestemvfx that video used the exact same settings as the wind test video.
      Røde has a good section on their website about the safety channel. I haven’t used it myself, but the main idea is that you record on two channels simultaneously and one of the channels is set at 20db lower and can serve as a backup for any clipping that the main channel captures. It should as well be stored on the transmitter, but to be sure, please check their website. I believe they are pretty good at answering questions directly.
      Good luck with your audio recordings. Take care.

    • @Maydeus
      @Maydeus  3 года назад +1

      Hi. Thanks for watching.
      I recorded with the transmitter connected to the receiver, but it’s possible to only use the transmitter and then sync the audio and video in post production. I use that approach more often now.
      The default is that the audio is recorded in mono (can be changed so that it records in stereo using both channels). Unfortunately I wasn’t using headphones myself when I edited (I’ve learned from that rookie mistake) so I missed changing to stereo in the editing process in Premiere Pro. It’s really simple to change from mono to stereo in Premiere Pro, and probably just as easy in most editing softwares. So, yes, it’s possible to put the same audio in both channels.
      I hope I answered your questions, otherwise, don’t hesitate to ask more questions.
      Take care!

    How do you listen to 2 people talk while recording at the same time? Can
    each of you plug in headphones in the MIC jack of the unit attached to
    you? Or is there some wireless function? Meaning is it possible to not
    only record your conversation...but can you communicated with each other
    when far apart? I want to use with my friend and I while riding bikes
    and using my phone to take video..so I assume it would record audio on
    both my phone AND units themselves? Also why was it only on 1 speaker?

    • @Maydeus
      @Maydeus  3 года назад

      Hello. Thanks for your question.
      I don't think it's possible to use them to communicate between riders far apart, but I'm not sure. Check with Rode on their website.
      The reason the audio only came out in mono is that the default setting is to record in mono. I had missed that when I made the video and I wasn't using headphones when I edited the material (which I have made a habit of doing since then) so I didn't notice until afterwards. You can easily switch to recording in stereo when using only one of the transmitters. Or else, it's quite easy to turn mono into stereo in the editing process.
      Thanks for watching.

      My opinion is that the lavalier only adds in esthetics and ease of use. The sound quality in the transmitter itself is good. For podcasting I would use a different solution, but for interviews I think the wireless Go 2 is a good solution.

I cross referenced that with historical weather data from wunderground.com.
