It is actually very smart way for an author of this beauty of a poem, to distance yourself from promotion of actual abuse, which I guess might be interpreted as such from some perspective.

Got here from the cyberpunk 2077 trailer and I couldn't be happier about this incidental find. I can't commend Archive enough for remaining brave and ground breaking in an era of boring, reproduced singles. Keep doing what you do and have done.

I think the "being underrated" is fortunate and unfortunate at the same time. Their music is very different from typical pop(ular) music and way more complex and deep. So the majority of people would that wants easy listening won't like them. I have a good friend who like alternative sounds but she says that she can't listen to Archive because the music is way to intense for her. And when she listens to a song then she has to sit down for it. And afterwards what she just listened to keeps her busy for quite some time mentally. I like that especially in music. Most people don't for one reason or another. Be it that it's not familiar enough to what they are used to or (in case of my friend) it's too complex.
In order for Archive to be more Pop (and therefore get liked my many more people) they would have to conform to the "classic Pop-rules" have more shallow and easy lyrics, a more Pop-like song structure aso. But then I wouldn't want to listen to them because they would sound like a million other bands and be replaceable easily. I think what they lack in appreciation in the sense of "more people knowing them" they have in the appreciation in terms of that the people who know them love them to death. And that makes one of the geratest bands alive imho.
Fun fact. Polish radio (no. 3) used to have this chart called Top of All Time, every year on New Year. It was songs people voted classics. First two places were Brothers in Arms or Stairway to heaven most of the times. But you know what was in top 10, top 5 and once on third place? Archive - Again. It lasts 17 minutes of mostly ambient. Third place.

I have to say, Archive is such a cool name for a band.
When I see an Archive video for the first time, I thumb up first, just to make it done and enjoy the next minutes.
Yes, saw them live on Friday. I think their music is live much better than in the studio versions. She REALLY sounds like that live too, thats awesome. Love how every song builds up slowly.
I know exactly what you are talking about. This band is not afraid of variety and that is a great thing. I usually listen to punk and metal, so lots of their songs don't really match my taste, but those few that I like give me that special feeling that only the best of the best songs can give. And I also really admire their music videos, they are made very precisely and they always tell some difficult story without losing that artsy feeling, and that's very nice in the world of bullshit videos.

Sounds like masochism in general. First, the song never specifies that it's an actual relationship. There is also a lot of symbolism and she never specifies anything more than "Every time you hurt me I want you more and more." Beyond that, everything she says is all hypothetical situations "if I had a hatchet," "If I had a pistol," "If I had an army," etc, etc..
How do we even know this isn't a stalker singing? How do we know this isn't someone who can't let go of an ex so she keeps hurting herself by trying to go back, but blaming him for not being available? The song is clearly obsessive and masochistic so those, and about a dozen other interpretations, are all equally valid readings of the song. We never see anything other than a clearly obsessed person's masochistic musings, so how the fuck do you figure it's codependency in an abusive relationship?
I don't see anything in the lyrics that suggests it is a codependent relationship. I also don't see anything that is outright abusive. Read the lyrics for yourself.

I've known so many women who are just like the woman in the song. Many married and had kids with their abusers and have been physically and psychologically beaten during the entire marriage. The song expresses the emotional truth of these women without explaining the "why" of it. That's it.
