It was challenging for Dvorak to write a quintet with so low an instrument than the contrabass. Shubert had more or less the same challenge in his famous quintet"the trout" (and Glinka in his sextet), but the treble of the piano helped him. But thanks to his sense for the melody and the balance of sonorities, Dvorak succeeded to write a parfectly balanced work, which is indeed a masterwork. It is one of his most attraxtive chamber scores.
I agree. In fact, I didn't even like this piece until this video, and I've played it with excellent musicians. This is so beautifully played, paced, and balanced that it is irresistible! Just perfect!
Why does everything beautiful have to be reduced to a contest? Cannot people play for the sheer joy of it, to communicate something profound and joyful? .
The music is very beautiful. I don't know the piece well, but I just have to say watching the video, there's something so funny to me about watching all 5 musicians weeble-wobble in place with the music. Maybe I shouldn't watch it.
A thought strikes me. If the audience applauds 👏 at the end of the 1st, 2nd & 4th movements but not after the 3rd movement, whsr does this mean? I wonder...

I used to play bass in a folk singing group and I always liked the body it brought to the music. The same holds true here.
This is some gorgeous string playing. Sensitive phrasing - wonderful job everyone

Love the second violin sound and vibrato
@clara Lyon with da bomb sound
Yes!!! You did it!!! This is why Dvorak won the first price!!! And how much this piece deserves it!! You play it so much alive and vibrant! I love it!
Yes, Dvorak won first Prize in a competition with this piece. It got him on the right track to fame and future masterpieces.
A breezy, happy piece -- well played..... Good ol' Dvorak.... Thanks for posting.....
Amazing and energetic performance what with such a difficult piece! Our quintet group had five days to learn this 😂 #rip
I have two months and I'm still worried about this! Definitely the hardest song I've played (I'm in high school)
@@fallenformosa9316 , this is not a song. :)
@@chinija71 Ah, you got me! I can't believe I called it a song.

Phase of recording is reversed
fools applauding between first and second movement mar this otherwise engaging performance
wow what a disruptive stupid audience!
it's ok in our book! back in the day if folks didn't applaud in between movements it was considered BAD. but glad you liked the performance! :D
Right ! Particularly after the 1st movement.
What's wrong with applause you miserable fuckwit.
