In the USA it's my impression from experience that because health care and CPAP are Big Business, the sleep centers they send you to are hell bent on getting you onto the CPAP train, whether you really need it or not.
Indeed I do wonder about this too. It's similar here in Australia. It seems to me that obstructive sleep apnea is mostly due to lipid/fat/adipose tissue depositing subcutaneously (including mucus membranes in the throat) and that by losing significant weight we can vastly improve sleep apnea. Of course this is easier said than done. And SA is another epidemic related to the obesity/overweight epidemic which is not due to individuals being irresponsible with diet but is a much wider and complex societal problem.
Mine was 25 approximately. If it could be worse I hate to think what it was!! But I was having some serious, scary and apparently rarer symptoms. I’ve sent 5 friends/relatives to dr as I spotted symptoms and all have ended up on treatment. My dr not recognising the symptoms for a long time and giving me heavy duty sleeping pills before a different dr recognised the rarer symptoms left me suffering and quite possibly threatened my life for a long time. Glad it seems to be better nowadays.
Thanks for this! I did a home sleep study, and my AHI score was 6.8, which my doctor said means I am "suspicious" of having apnea . I normally prefer sleeping on my side, though, so your point is well taken. If I would have seen your video before the sleep study, I would have tried sleeping on my back more. I would do a sleep study in a lab, but I don't sleep well away from home. I enjoy your channel, thanks!
Sleeping according to your preference is fine. You most likely had a position sensor in your home study. The report will usually have a table of different stages, positions and the AHI in each. Be careful interpreting any position or stage that has under about 30 mins sampled as it’s usually highly misleading… a couple of events can look pretty wild.
Great work Vic! Thank you.
You are such a huge help, thank you 🙏
I had the sleepstudy in my Home. The result vas a bit suspicious and also I hardly slept that night because of the test thing on my chest.😏
Same here.
Ditto.

Ahi has many, many limitations. It’s part of the whole understanding of sleep but it is a reductive measure that can be deranged for a variety of reasons
i have this feel terrible had a sleep study and was told that you only keep waking up when your on your back so dont sleep on your back go away
Lol. What?! Changing positions in sleep is totally involuntary.
Once people used to tie/fix a small item such as a cotton reel to the small of the back to prevent back sleeping. I have never tried it though.
Side sleeper backpack, works very well for my positional sleep apnea.
You’re such a help to us - how important is the oxygen levels mine on average is around 80 but then drops to low 60s during my REM sleep should I be concerned about this?
You would be dead by now if it was so low, stop using cheap sensors to monitor
@iDTecKt not true. My sats drop that low and lower when I don't use CPAP. The body suffers but doesn't die. You wake up more exhausted than when you went to bed and have chronic daytime sleepiness, can't keep your eyes open. You die when you fall asleep during driving. When your cats are low your heart works too hard trying to circulate more blood to get more oxygen to the tissues but there isn't any so your body tries to dump fluid and you wake up sweating or having to go to the bathroom often. You also wake up with headaches and chest aches. Eventually you develop high blood pressure. So yeah you can die from the effects of that, or you can die from your heart enlarging from working so hard when your body should be resting and then you develop atrial fibrillation and eventually have a stroke, not to mention the weight you gain, I could go on.
Resmed 10 says i have 1.9 ahi, but a smart watch says i am waking up 30 times at night
Could it be useful to look at the full night graph of Oximetry to see if desalts are consistent throughout the night or come in patches or blocks of shorter durations?
Charzard!
