During the oil crisess 70-80s many big block owners replaced their motors with low cubic inch small blocks. Are yhe engine frame mounts big block or small block, also check the difg ratio, and are there signs that there was factory motor tie downs used.
Wow 28 years! My 69 ss 350 sat for 19 years, and all I done was replace the coil and distributor, changed the plugs also and it started right up. Only problem I'm having is the rear main seal leaking, it uses oil
I like how people can't read a video description. It sounded pretty nice to me, given how long it sat. I did catch that the lifters didn't make a damn sound lol can't wait to check back on this and see the finished product. Y'all best be doin' some burnouts
Hope you shot some oil in the spark plug holes before starting... Good luck with it. I have a Road Runner. Just want to share some brand-diversity love, I love all old muscle cars!
I miss carbs and I'm an import guy so v8's arent really my thing! Ahahahahha. I miss working on them with my grandpa I guess. I loved tearing into one to see how everything works together!
Wow, sounds like you and I had the same childhood. I was just thinking how awesome it is that a 302 Chevy can be swaped in without a computer/harness because there isn't one haha. How times have changed
Awesomeman1987 looks like its pretty common then because I had the same thing. Having a passion for cars is a gene in my family. You either have it or you don't. I caught it terribly haha.
I remember as a kid,my mom had a 68 Camaro convertible (last of the Pace Cars),Yellow and black, with black interior, with a 350 Big Block in it.....man,I MISS that car.....
+Mike Sweeney Chevy never made a 350 big block. It was the new (for 1967) 350 small block, which was originally introduced as a performance engine. Before being offered in the more pedestrian vehicles, it was found in Cameros, Corvettes, and Chevelles in several horsepower ranges. Your Mom's car could have come with as much as 375 hp in 68, but still a small block. Cheers!
Paul Copeland he isn't correct in this instance considering I remember there being a 350 Big block in it.and again,my Dad owned an auto salvage/repair shop...
Yes it is also a Ford engine, one of Fords most popular engines actually, however chevy did produce a 302 to go into the first gen z28s as it was a car meant more for track applications and handling instead of having an engine with a bigger displacement it had a pretty potent 302 and an upgraded suspension for better handling.
Nice video, I would have hooked up the radiator and hoses and coolant to see if the thermostat opens and if you have any leaking in the gasket area.. Also would have hacked the exhaust at the driver seat so you don't catch all the garbage the mice have stored in those tunnels on fire or damage the valves from too much back pressure..Looks like Old "Dad" got way too excited & got in a hurry, not thinking about the damage and dangers he initiating. Well done👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Killer! Yeah sometimes when something is sitting that long you get very Lucky! Change the Oil,Plugs & Filter pull the V/Covers & check the Springs & Rockers & do a Leak Down Etc..You may have a descent Motor after all! Good Luck!
Power disc brakes were standard for the first year in '69 on the Z28 . The brake option was the 4 wheel disc. The engine was the 302 ,290 horsepower (underated) only .
And for the brakes , the drum brakes had no power brakes the up grade was power brakes with disc. And a very rare option is 4 wheel disc , I have a friend that has one.
lol...that camaro looks every bit of what most late '60's muscle looked like by the mid '80's. I recall many examples just like this back in the day. They could be had for $2k-3k!
Rock Morris GM built a 302 for only 2 years I think, if they even produced them that long, they were popular in the 68 Camaro's & 69's. Read article in Super Chevy magazine a few years back. Thought I would spread the knowledge. ✌👍
Had a guy down the road that has 69 road runner sitting in the barn. Has been sitting there since 1969 when his son got drafted. He never came back from nam.
you can tell it is a big block car by the location of the radiator hoses going through the firewall and the VIN will only tell you if it is 6 cylinder or V8 car... also if the car is Norwood car the Xcode on the data plate will tell u what it is also
Where do you find cars like this, how much do you typically pay for them and what do you do to the car to get to the point where you can get it to start like that? I'm interested in knowing and would really love to get into this, it looks enjoyable.
I hope you have the number matching big block, if in fact it had one from the factory. With # matching big block it's worth prolly $50,000 more than without. :(
The hood on this car has been replaced not original Still black and missing the linkage and the wire harness for the flap , Probably a plain Jane with the badges added.
There was an other motor option for the Z/28 it was a 350, If it had the tach it was a 7000 rpm tach , The 302 had a 8000 rpm tach also the 302 had special pulleys the were deep grooved because the 302 was a high rpm motor , It Was A MONSTER !!! The Ford 302 was not even close !!
Yeah, you're right, the standard ford 302 wasn't close. But the BOSS 302 commonly used in the trans am races was a few steps above the GM 302. Just like the Cleveland 351 was much better than the standard GM 350, but the 350 used in SS Camaros are a few steps above the 351. But nobody really cares about stock.
In 67, in order to race the camaro in Trans Am series the engine displacement had to be under 305 cubic inches. Chevy took the 327 block and with the 283 crank it came in at 302 cubic inches. This engine was the ONLY engine available in the Z/28 and chevy homologated it in street cars in order to race it on the track. RS was an asthetics package (hide away headlights, gauges, etc) and SS was the 350 or the 396. ALL other Camaros either had the 283, 327 or the straight 6. The ONLY way to know what that Camaro was originally would be to look at the VIN # and the trim tag on the firewall. Post pics of both (blur out the last 6 digits of the VIN if you like) and I'll tell you exactly what it was built with and where, etc!
The car was originally a Big Block 396 RS/SS but someone tried to slap Z28 emblems on it and swapped in a 327 back in the day which is how it currently sits.
LT1HILLINGHOE After all these years I learned something new. I remember the inline 6, 307, 327, 350, 400, 396 and 454 chevy engines but I don't remember the 302 at all in a GM.
Looking at this video, Under the hood and the door jambs everything is white with no hint of Yellow including the rust spots there should be flaking on the spots showing some yellow.
I'm from England and that was a great video and I got goose Pimples when she fired up. My all time favourite muscle car. What did your friend pay for her in that condition?
If it had a big block in it at one time someone replaced the original 302 with the big block. These guys don't know what they have here. Only one Chevrolet Camaro 1st-gen. Z28 Coupe version was available in 1969: RWD (rear-wheel drive), manual 4-speed gearboxpetrol (gasoline) engine with displacement: 4942 cm3 / 301.6 cui, advertised power: 216 kW / 290 hp / 294 PS ( SAE gross ), torque: 393 Nm / 290 lb-ft
so what did your pops buy it for? not exactly a car you normally find sitting in a backyard rusting away..can't imagine there's many 69 camaro "barn finds" left since it's probably one of thee most sought after muscle cars next to maybe the 70 chevelle.
Heres a little something for those who may be lookingto ad a few rare camaros to their collection. several years ago as i was on my delivery route one of my deliveries was to a residence in upscale Atherton Ca. The homes in atherton are older million $+ each one usually hidden from view by high concrete walls. I located the address and parked my truck along the wall near the gate. As i walked the delivery through the front gate into the courtyard i was surprised by how the entire place had been totally over run by vegitation, As i aproched the house i could see a row 8 or 9 cars parkedain the weeds growing out of the assault, all Comaros. Then i noticedmore against the wall totally covered by a canopy of vines, at least 10 more. In all there had to be 25 or more. All looked as if deiven of the showroom floor to where the sit now. when i knoked on the service entrance door and elderly man in a stained t shirt answered and had me follow him through the house wich meant navigating a narrow path formed by neet stacks af newspapers tv dinner trays, army size soup cans, etc. He was a hoarder. When i asked about the cars he didnt say a word. If still alive maybe he could be persuaded to part with one or two of these hidden gems, if they can be found, was a long time ago and im not sure if the address is correct but looking at google maps it looks like the place 206 Valparaiso Ave Atherton California
Z/28's came with an underrated 302 CI engine that was factory rated at 290 horsepower but more realistic ratings with a 750 holley and good headers put that closer to 400 horses. Original big block Z/28? Ummm that didn't happen, if it was a big block it was put in after it was bought.
If the numbers DO indicate orig. big block (396) if would be worth it to find a 396 to put in it (worth much more). I see Z/28 badges on the front which tells me its very rare 302 small block engine rated at 290HP but actually made much more. If the numbers DO indicate it was orig. a big block it could be either a 396/350HP or a 396/375HP the 375 being the solid lifter high performance version. 427cid motors were only made in the ROP (regular production option) ZL1.
ok whats the trim tag say? whats the x code.. thats what tells it all. if its a pre x code.. its a camaro.. , 327 was never an SS . is there a 12 bolt is there discs ? is there a bracket in drivers rear wheel well for exhaust ( that bracket is only on SS cars ) .
it obviously does not have the correct disc brake proportioning valve for 69/70 so was probably not a disc brake car. im going w x11 rs 327 car w z emblems pumped on it
The heartbeat of America will never stop beating...
Whom ever put "Budweiser" on the spoiler like to provoke the authorities.
that's called a "leave it the way it is and drive the hell out of it" car. it took years to get that epic patina!
ThunderHead289 you can buy an old Civic or fucus in similar condition for 2k
TheBikemaster94 what’s the fun in a old rusty civic?
i notice all camaros are " barn finds" on here😆 and all numbers matching z28
Omg Budweiser. I can imagine the 70s... Joint in ashtray, beer between legs, cruisin, looking for the babes. 4krpm at 45
70's? That was me in college a few years ago
+kuruptzZz right, but I'm talking about the 70s. Congratulations on drinking Budweiser in college.
AJ N oh my fault I misread that part...I'm not a fan of bud, I like moosehead
kuruptzZz yup that's Canadian beer notthing better then that
no A j n
you couldnt begin to imagine what the 70's were really like but ill never forget it.
Nice to see someone taking care of this old beauty^^
During the oil crisess 70-80s many big block owners replaced their motors with low cubic inch small blocks.
Are yhe engine frame mounts big block or small block, also check the difg ratio, and are there signs that there was factory motor tie downs used.
hey, nice sounding smallblock, serious, 28 years no go, unbelievable, no lifter noise, impressive, i live breath chev, so im not suprised, later
Great looking car, awesome to see it jump back to life :)
You win the internets for the greatest road song ever
i got chills the first time it fired! hands down my favorite muscle car
Damn it sounded good. The lifters didn't even rattle!
I hope that Z28 gets a full restoration, it certainly is worthy.
Thing I loved about my 69, it didn't matter which gas lane you got in -right or left side, the gas cap is behind the the license plate.
love the golden earrings in the background (Y)
Hope you had fun with this car .
1984.. Mmm I remember that year very well. After a end of the era
Hope you shot some oil in the spark plug holes before starting... Good luck with it. I have a Road Runner. Just want to share some brand-diversity love, I love all old muscle cars!
what year of your RR. I've got a 71 satellite sebring. videos on my page.
I miss carbs and I'm an import guy so v8's arent really my thing! Ahahahahha. I miss working on them with my grandpa I guess. I loved tearing into one to see how everything works together!

Prime motor with oil?
New oil and filter ?
LET'S SCREW.IT UP PERMANENTLY !
BRILLIANT!
I remember as a kid,my mom had a 68 Camaro convertible (last of the Pace Cars),Yellow and black, with black interior, with a 350 Big Block in it.....man,I MISS that car.....

David Bower
Trust me,my Dad owned a salvage yard and bought/sold cars and parts, and that Camaro had a 350 Big Block in it....
David is correct. Smallest Chev big block is 396 cu in. 427 and 454 were available in various models of cars and trucks.
Paul Copeland
he isn't correct in this instance considering I remember there being a 350 Big block in it.and again,my Dad owned an auto salvage/repair shop...
I have a 1969 Chevy with a 396 I'm parting out if you can not find the 427
sweet find and worth a small fortune
Yes it is also a Ford engine, one of Fords most popular engines actually, however chevy did produce a 302 to go into the first gen z28s as it was a car meant more for track applications and handling instead of having an engine with a bigger displacement it had a pretty potent 302 and an upgraded suspension for better handling.
My '62 Dodge Dart sat in a barn for 45 years. Gas down carb and the 4bbl 318 poly runs sweet. 52k miles. There's a vid of it.
Sounds pretty good considering, I like the Budweiser sticker on the rear spoiler. If you drove in NY with that, you be pulled over in no time.
Actually some Z/28s were offered with the Rally Sport package, pretty sweet project
great project car. Another Camaro saved.
Can you make a list of things you've done before starting the engine? I mean, new battery is obvious, new oil propably, filters...what else?
Rolled a joint.
Fresh coolant, new spark plugs new wires and new distributor cap and rotor hat. Make sure you have clean fresh fuel also!
Interesting to see what car it was when it was built. You see it's a RS/SS big block that someone turned into a z/28 clone
With some Golden Earing (Radar love 1983) Music playing in the background, it is allmost if the car only wants to start with music it knows...;)
Baby driver soundtrack lol
Starts up after 28 years. Thats the power of Chevy. lol
It's going to be great watching this project
Radar Love!! haha! love those cars... especially with the hideaway lights...
And for the brakes , the drum brakes had no power brakes the up grade was power brakes with disc. And a very rare option is 4 wheel disc , I have a friend that has one.
My 1955 GMC truck is also from Alaska with the same colored plates. Except my expiration date is April of 1991.
You should also stick a Big block back in it plenty of really nice ones available these days. Even 427's and 572 would be even better.
That is the type of paint job that just need's some clear coat. Because it take's years to get nice old patina like that. :)
lol...that camaro looks every bit of what most late '60's muscle looked like by the mid '80's. I recall many examples just like this back in the day. They could be had for $2k-3k!
Shes definitely got potential. I cant wait to start my 69 build one day.
For the same reason it has a Budweiser decal on the rear spoiler. It explains why the Z28 badges are there in the write up beneath the video.
Ya a 302 in a GM is a little bit strange, but that's what it was fitted with. And it is one of my favorite muscle cars !
Rock Morris
GM built a 302 for only 2 years I think, if they even produced them that long, they were popular in the 68 Camaro's & 69's.
Read article in Super Chevy magazine a few years back. Thought I would spread the knowledge. ✌👍
What was the previous owner's reason for letting sit for nearly 30 yrs in the elements??
One thing I've noticed about siting cars is you normally figure out why they were siting when u start driving it
he wanted that patena ,,LOL,,
Priorities change. Money is a big factor. Restoring and maintaining muscle/pony cars is expensive.
Had a guy down the road that has 69 road runner sitting in the barn. Has been sitting there since 1969 when his son got drafted. He never came back from nam.
Sweet I'm surprised it's not rusted to crap and motor is still good can depend on your chevy
you can tell it is a big block car by the location of the radiator hoses going through the firewall and the VIN will only tell you if it is 6 cylinder or V8 car... also if the car is Norwood car the Xcode on the data plate will tell u what it is also
fantastic video. I have an 80 T/A barn find.. love this video..
Where do you find cars like this, how much do you typically pay for them and what do you do to the car to get to the point where you can get it to start like that?
I'm interested in knowing and would really love to get into this, it looks enjoyable.
Hopefully you'll find the original 396 engine
That’s the Z 28 manifold and carburetor that’s the W302 Indian it is like the valve covers and the manifold came on the car
I hope you have the number matching big block, if in fact it had one from the factory. With # matching big block it's worth prolly $50,000 more than without. :(
super great project
The hood on this car has been replaced not original Still black and missing the linkage and the wire harness for the flap , Probably a plain Jane with the badges added.

Beautiful car!
if it was the original motor, i could see it having a bit more trouble, but considering the swap out, it doesn't surprise me that it started so easily
there were only like a few thousand z28s that car is worth a shit ton
What I'd like to know is, who added the Budweiser advert on the spoiler?
that was prob a late 70's early 80's thing the owner did cause it was "just cool"
Sounds like a Z 28 give me a small block 302 was it valve covers in the manifold and a colleague that car navigate with a big block
what a sound...
U should do some updates with this car
sweet!!! Cool find!
Nice Camaro! Be a fun driver with a 327 4 speed
I thought the 69 Z28 had a 302 under the hood ? Not a 396 ? Notice the Z28 badge in the grille.
The car was originally a Big Block 396 RS/SS but someone tried to slap Z28 emblems on it and swapped in a 327 back in the day which is how it currently sits.
The 302 is a Ford engine.
auaiao9
302 is also a Chevrolet engine that came in a 69 Z28. Factory 290 horsepower.
LT1HILLINGHOE After all these years I learned something new. I remember the inline 6, 307, 327, 350, 400, 396 and 454 chevy engines but I don't remember the 302 at all in a GM.
x
0:11 Why is there a Z/28 tag on the front fender?
That proud moment when you first start up a disused car
And you changed all the fluids and filters, right?
I would not have changed the fluids until I heard it run,as long as they were correct levels!
That would be a very valuable car if it had its original motor.
Its still a very valuable car.
i wanna get one like it in the same condition but how do i get them and how much do they cost?
ebay and a ARM & a LEG.
... one does not simply throw away a big block. what did he do to it?
Eternal Darkness : Previous Video Said Orig.Mtr.Had Cracked Blk.From Leaving It In Elements of ALASKA w/ Out Antifreeze,Probably.
Looking at this video, Under the hood and the door jambs everything is white with no hint of Yellow including the rust spots there should be flaking on the spots showing some yellow.
I'm from England and that was a great video and I got goose Pimples when she fired up. My all time favourite muscle car. What did your friend pay for her in that condition?
headlight doors work for the hideaway lights?
If it had a big block in it at one time someone replaced the original 302 with the big block. These guys don't know what they have here.
Only one Chevrolet Camaro 1st-gen. Z28 Coupe version was available in 1969: RWD (rear-wheel drive), manual 4-speed gearboxpetrol
(gasoline) engine with displacement: 4942 cm3 / 301.6 cui, advertised
power: 216 kW / 290 hp / 294 PS ( SAE gross ), torque: 393 Nm /
290 lb-ft
I like your profile picture but I can appreciate the car, what kind of car is it....?
so what did your pops buy it for? not exactly a car you normally find sitting in a backyard rusting away..can't imagine there's many 69 camaro "barn finds" left since it's probably one of thee most sought after muscle cars next to maybe the 70 chevelle.
Awesome!

blazeraider that's amazing
was waiting to see that be said :)

the trim tag will tell if it was a true big block camaro
Why the hell don’t we need the oil pressure gauge which is sometimes called an oil pressure meter on newer cars from like later model modern era cars?
Can i haz it :) ?
I'll never understand how someone can let a '69 Camaro just rot like that for nearly three decades. Some people just have no sense.
My favorite car
If the numbers DO indicate orig. big block (396) if would be worth it to find a 396 to put in it (worth much more). I see Z/28 badges on the front which tells me its very rare 302 small block engine rated at 290HP but actually made much more. If the numbers DO indicate it was orig. a big block it could be either a 396/350HP or a 396/375HP the 375 being the solid lifter high performance version. 427cid motors were only made in the ROP (regular production option) ZL1.
327 was the best engine chevy ever made
ok whats the trim tag say? whats the x code.. thats what tells it all.
if its a pre x code.. its a camaro.. , 327 was never an SS . is there a 12 bolt is there discs ? is there a bracket in drivers rear wheel well for exhaust ( that bracket is only on SS cars ) .
are you akman360? he has a 1967 firebird and you both south EXACTLY alike, hes also from alaska or is that just the accent??
my left ear enjoyed this
2:10 was that inside the exhaust pipe?
How it’s been sitting for 28 years and u say since 84 I was born in 91 and mine 27 🤔
1:44 - yep, she's still in there ;)
Yes, he says 'original' BB car but Z/28 in front and rear
My dad has a 69 442 not fired since 1993...
I'm bettin the exhaust pipes and mufflers are packed full of rats nests, paper, twigs, and a couple deaf rodents.
sbc388550
Yep, he should have hacked the exhaust at the driver seat, loud but, a true reading on how "in tune" it is, you're absolutely right.👍
SS was a perf option and RS was a trim option
it's a allllliiiiiiivvvvve
it obviously does not have the correct disc brake proportioning valve for 69/70 so was probably not a disc brake car. im going w x11 rs 327 car w z emblems pumped on it
I bet the Fuel pump ,is not in the best shape. after so many years
