  • After the Chess Olympiad 2024, we sat down with Gukesh and discussed with him how he managed to perform at an Elo of 3056, scoring 9.0/10 with wins over amazing players like Wei Yi, Caruana, Fedoseev. This interview was conducted at 4 a.m. but Gukesh was extremely fresh as we went over each and every game of his and tried to understand better how the World Championship Challenger thinks.

    When I first saw the 2022 B team coming to play, it was crazy hype - 4 kids (Gukesh, Pragg, Nihal and Raunak with Adibhan as 5) wrecking havoc, but like Pragg said 'we stay hungry for gold till Hungary'. Maybe the timeline worked out well as now we could see Gukesh + Arjun combo steamroll the field with a way better storyline around 2800 and candidates and WCC in picture.
    God's plan, Gukesh!

    We absolutely cannot underestimate Ding. He is a beast. Magnus himself has said multiple times that Ding is the only one that scares him. On a good day, Ding can steamroll anyone in the world.
    Odds are he is also hiding his real preparation. Not showing his strongest lines and strongest prep. Getting conceited is NOT something Gukesh has ever done, but this is the biggest challenge for you so far in that, Gukesh.
    Hope you stay strong and focused. You got his!

    • @neerajnongmaithem392
      @neerajnongmaithem392 2 дня назад +4

      He definitely has prep, the problem is what after the prep. Ding in his prime was only second to magnus in his prime. But Ding is actually struggling which is quite sad to see, the amount of inaccuracies he is making against far weaker players is no lie. I dont think Ding has ever have had a slump worse then this, it happens sometimes. Recent memory is Hikaru before pandemic when he kept on losing elo and completely burned out, only to bouce back after he started streaming and taking things less seriously. Same is happening to anish, mvl, levon to a certain degree, these qere were all 2800 players once and were part of the top 10 for almost a decade.

      @@HezOmanjoduring the olympiad gold celebration, gukesh got handed the trophy, pragg who was standing on the edge couldn't really touch the trophy properly, after raising it once he passed the trophy to Pragg to raise, which was very considerate imo, since Pragg seemed pretty down during most of celebrations, maybe cause in Pragg's own words, his personal performance wasnt good this olympiad. That kind of behavior of taking care of everyone in team at both highs and lows is pretty good. He is even younger than Pragg but very mature in his actions.

But I do agree that, given Gukesh's current form, he will be a favorite even if Ding gets back to his form (which was not the case against Candidates Gukesh), and even if he regains his play level against Nepo in last WC, but 2019 Ding? Nah, 60-40 in favour of 2019 Ding, being generous to Gukesh.
      But it doesn't matter, no way Ding will be his 2019 self, best he can hope for is to get back in a fighting shape or be at the level he was when he won the WC, Gukesh will still be the favourite in those two cases.

      It won't change anything, he didn't reveal what preparation he has done. Everyone knows gukesh relies on just calculation. He calculates everything and tries to play perfect chess. There is no chance of him blundering something. His intense calculation will either out power the opponent or since he has a solid understanding of the position even though he misses some winning moves, it will end up in a draw. The only way for ding to retain is play boring lines and avoid gukesh from progressing towards a win, then everything comes to tiebreaks ,where it will be rapid blitz . Gukesh is not an intuitive player that much , that's why he is not that good in shorter time control. If u allow him to calculate with some time, he can beat anyone . Still beating magnus in classical regularly is not easy because he has a great memory , intution and calculation. That man is from out of this world.
