I would like to say thank you! I've found out about Artprof for a week while I was trying to learn about gouache. Since then, whenever I study, I put your videos in the background because your speeches or vibes help me focus. I come back to some videos because I find them useful for me. There are too many videos on RUclips teaching tips and tricks that overwhelm me. In contrast, your content gives me so much trust that I can actually learn something fundamental. And I couldn't be more grateful! Please keep up your amazing works!
The "adding colors is like eating potato chips" analogy is perfect haha. I find I make much better pieces if I limit my color palette from the start. Otherwise having too many colors can distract from the subject of the artwork.
Totally, each color added also brings with it all of its context, emotions, and history, it can be so hard to wrangle them all into something cohesive when you have so many! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist
Great inspiration to watch this video - for me especially your chose of different examples - its so nice to find an artist that you did not know that you like to look at. Color is like Music for me - very important to open into unique experiences
Thank you for all of your suggestions on where to find color combos. As a watercolor enthusiast understanding color is so important because of the transparency of the medium. It hides nothing so overworking a painting happens in the blink of an eye.
That's so true! Transparency is so different from piling on paint, because there's no going back once you make a mark. Thank you so much for watching :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Loved this! Such a fresh approach to colour palettes! I take away the idea of really noticing examples of colour schemes from my everyday life, from packaging to film stills to postcards. Am curious if the video about light and colour is available to continues my learning! Excited to move forward on a project working from only 5 colours! Time to select! Thanks for the awesome examples from a variety of different sources! Inspiring!
We have a TON of self taught artist curriculums here for you to browse through as you continue your artistic endeavor! Thank you so much for watching :) artprof.org/library/learn/tracks/ - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I create a colour palette by taking an existing image and using crystallise filter in photoshop, set to around 60-80 for cell size (depending on the image complexity) and it gives an excellent range of colours to work with
Yes, speaking of light, can you do a video about lights and lamps you recommend for lighting the area of the house where you work. I've been given the dining room table as a studio and am in the process of trying to figure out if the lighting is right.
Neutral colors are like the introverted friends who enhance the conversation and make the extroverted saturated colors pop. And we underrate the introverted friends/neutrals because they seem quieter.
Wow that’s great 😃 I do the same thing sometime I will take a old painting that I really really like from like the 15th century because I love old master paintings and I will swatch and color pic from that particular painting in procreate and make a color palette for myself!
Thanks Lauryn, really helpful point re colour theory v colour practice, and the need to control the appetite for individual colours. I go the other direction to clown vomit - too many greys, without enough juxtapositions of complementary colours to make them seem bright, although I have to ask, What is too grey?🙂 I'm also going to try mixing colours on the palette after watching this. I remember a video where the artist more or less made their painting on the palette then transferred it to the canvas - you probably can't get more efficient than that. Thanks again.
Wow, thank you so much for watching! We're glad you enjoyed it. If you liked this video, here's another with Lauryn you might enjoy: ruclips.net/video/4Nu8AfPtRaA/видео.html - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
When working with coloured pencils, I like to put down a base of the colour I think fits that part of the drawing and then go over it with other colours to add volume, hints of light, variations in colour to make it more realistic, etc. I basically work it like a graphite drawing. You never want to only have one layer of colour when working with coloured pencils and it's best if you let your colours mix
Oh, that's a great way of going about it! Thanks for the tip :) I bet blending colors like that results in some great subtleties. If you liked this video, you might also enjoy this one about crayon drawing and color: ruclips.net/video/QL5HZD1kEjY/видео.html - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
For me its very much about limitation and intensifying subtle differences of warm-cold and multivaried tones of one or two colors creating speciel harmonies - and by the way I love desaturated paintings but yet also contrasts of all kinds soft-hard, transparent- opaqueness,
That's interesting you mentioned Ethan Allen because I'm completely drawn to anthropology colors I I I'm sure they coordinate colors but each individual color is also beautiful.

I'm just 4 mins in and I have to hit pause to comment. Finding out there are people who think color is an add-on is just bizarre to me? I've worked with art directors from small video and print companies before (not as an artist), and the palette is part of the presentation/proposal to the client. In addition to that, using color to draw out a certain mood or theme is part of cinematography and, in some occasions, writing.
There are so many different avenues of work, it can seem so surprising that color is valued differently between them! Personally, color is one of the most important things to me :) Thanks for watching! - Mia, Art Prof Staff
I adore your video! Your video was suggested so I checked it out. Just wanted to show some support 🧡 I run a channel too. If you have a moment to check it out that would be much appreciated! 💜

Laurens process for the win!
I bought 2 pair of glasses with brown tinted lenses and it gave me a new view on how to color my landscape photography

These videos are so, so helpful! Thanks for all the time and energy you put into them. 🥰

I second that. Wired mag just covered all the new smart lights and we have so many options. I do prefer a warm daylight. But that may not be best..
Excellent discussion with examples. Thanks

What is condiment cups? I have never heard about them
Those little plastic cups with lids that contain stuff like ketchup, soy sauce, etc
