I lived, studied and worked in East Lansing area for 5 years. This one's making me feel nostalgic. The people in Michigan were so nice and friendly. Hope Michigan can transform its economy successfully.
I was born and grew up in Lansing, and this video reminded me that most of the time, with exceptions in the summer, the area weather is cloudy and gray. I never paid any attention to that until I moved away for a few years and then returned. Dark gray, rain and snow, beautiful fall days, but then a snowy cold winter. Not sure I could live there all year around again. But I still love the area and it was a great place to "come of age" in the '50's , '60's and '70's. Go Sparty!!
I do. It's mostly a mixed to somewhat negative bag for me, but I've been to some places in Michigan that are far worse. I like the fact that it's affordable, there are some parks to visit, and while there are bad neighborhoods, there are also really great neighborhoods with actual character (the West Side especially comes to mind). What I cannot stand is that the roads are the worst, the public schools are under-performing, the poverty is bad, although this is minor at night it tends to be dead, and it is correct that crime is terrible in certain neighborhoods. So, it's a catch-22 and definitely a working class community.
Interesting fact: Lansing is the only state Capitol that also isn't a county seat, and it spans three counties: Clinton county, Ingham county and Eaton county
Lansing BARELY touches Clinton county. Like I’m talking barely kisses up to it and I’m pretty sure the tiny bit that is in Clinton county would still be considered Dewitt
Back in the 60s Lansing had not yet mastatized into Clinton and Eaton counties like it has since. It had the good manners to stay in Ingham County, of which the county seat is a town called Mason.
I live in Lansing on the eastside. I think the neighborhood you traveled is not the condition of most neighborhoods. Moores River dr area, Eastside, Westside, and many other areas were missed. Lansing is really a beautiful city with major construction ongoing in many places.
Ryan. Do you have a passport? Have you ever used it? Paris is a beautiful city. So is Rome. In fact, most European cities are fabulous places to live. Based on this video. If I was forced to move to Lansing. I would probably develop a serious drug habit and / or kill myself. Outside of East Germany, or the industrial cities of Poland, when the Communist governments were in power (1945-1989/90/91) during which time I visited. This has to be one of the most depressing places to live in the world. I see no soul. No heartbeat. No culture. Almost no people. Except in cars. So Lansing is trying to attract tech companies? Good luck with that. I lived in Denver during its tech boom and it had great outdoor sports, all year round. A great bar and restaurant scene. Endless places to visit within an hour's drive. Okay, its not the fairest comparison. My point is that Denver started it's tech boom in the 1990's. Lansing has missed the boat. By a generation. That in itself is very, very sad. Whoever's been running your town for the last thirty years, really screwed the pooch :(
Lansing has changed a lot since I lived there as a kid from '68 to '73. Graduated Everett HS. I feel lucky to have lived there back then. I don't know about now.
I live here now, for about 5 years. I'm from Jackson originally. It's definitely... Okay. I heard that it was once a better place to live and work, right now it's a bit on the downtrodden side. There are nice parts of town, though, such as Old Town on the Northside.
I had heard Lansing, up until the 80s was the “ auto capitol of the world” meaning more cars were made per - capita than a city in the world. A small city of 150:k had about 50 k working in auto industry
Yes there were 3 or more large auto factories here in Lansing. My uncle used to work on robots at them. All but 1 large complex have closed and been demolished. Oldsmobile HQ is here in Lansing, now a vacant office building. Lansing being smaller than Detroit and have so many factories made the economy hugely dependent.
@@Nphen Dont forget up to the 70's Lansing had Diamond Reo and John Bean factories operating, along with 3 Oldsmobile plants, a Fisher Body plant, and a ton of suppliers and forges for all those plants making parts for them.
I remember my company I worked for at the time. About a dozen of us would take the company bus to lansing to pick up our brand new company cars. Brand new buicks right from the dealership.
Growing up in Lansing through the late 80's and 90's was amazing. It was great then, a thriving city that felt safe. When the GM plants closed down and all of those well-paying jobs left the city, that's when things started to change. Hanging out at the carnivals in Logan Square on MLK as a 10-12 year old (at night and without parents) would be absolutely unheard of today, even 15 years ago. They stopped having those carnivals because of all the shootings and fights. I remember going to Putt Putt, Apple Sports Plex, Edru, Lansing Ice Arena/Twistars, getting ice cream at Frosty Corner, going to the AMC theater by the mall, swimming at Lake Lansing(before it became poop soup) and all of the fun parks(Frances, Hawk Island, Patriarch, Sharp, there's so many). CATA rides were 25 cents. The big picnics they would have for all the kids who were Safety's in Lansing schools. The whole city would come out to watch the fireworks on the 3rd and 4th of July. Cinco de Mayo at Cristo Rey and the Carribean festivals at LCC. Jazz Festivals in Old Town. I could go on and on. I had a great childhood in Lansing. It was a great place to grow up. I'm watching videos like this because I miss it. Hopefully things can continue to improve and Lansing can rebound like never before.
Lansing is better off now than it has been since probably the 60's or 70's. The closure of the GM plants resulted in basically no net job loss over the long term because they built the Delta and Grand River plants (and now a battery plant as well). The last census even showed a population increase for the first time in decades.
Was born in St Lawrence hospital, (now Sparrow) 1960. I live in Denver,Co. now. My mom 96, still lives in the same "home on Jerome" street for almost 70 years!
You avoided nearly every hood and abandoned factories/plants in Lansing which isn't surprising being a tourist. You could've gotten a far more realistic feel for the city with much better and less repetitive footage exploring Old town. The East side through Kalamazoo and Baker. The West side through MLK Saginaw and Willow. The North side through Grand River Pennsylvania Turner and César E Chávez Ave. And the South side of town through Churchill Downs Jolly Cedar and Holmes just to name a few. East Lansing is a college town separate from Lansing they're two different cities. You should do a separate video on East Lansing. There's plenty of good footage to be seen of the MSU campus and north of the area. I'd get off the strip more often and explore the surrounding neighborhoods for a truer feel of any city you ride through in the future.
I grew up in East Lansing, and everyone in my family had lived in the state since my great grandparents came over from the volga just before WWI. My grandparents owned a bar and rented apartments on grand river ave through much of the mid 20th century, my mom worked for the state government, my dad worked for Lansing public schools, and my uncle worked for GM for much of his life. It was really strange watching what was happening to the state/city growing up as a child. Seeing all the old leftover infrastructure from the glory days of GM, seeing the decline in local businesses and and seeing our schools get worse each year. It's the kind of thing that only really made sense to me as an adult in hindsight. I don't think there are any single groups or people to blame for the decline in the area, but it's sad to see a place with so much history and community feel so empty and soulless.
When did east Lansing decline? I mean I'm completely clueless. Its been about 15 years since I've been there.was it in that time period or do you mean same time as detroit declining Edit i didn't hear him say about when the decline happened before I posted! 😆
@@scummydummy Lansing hasn't been in decline, it bottomed out in the 1990's like a lot of places did. Except the southwest side (Jolly/Waverly area), the city has generally improved since then, Lansing will probably finally see its population on the rise again in the 2020 census.
I was born on the west side the city of Lansing bought our home to develop a freeway to downtown 😢 at four yrs. old family moved raised in Churchill Downs neighborhood The Southside. I see a Dollar Tree across from QD it use to be a Rite-Aid there also use to be a McDonald’s on South Waverly Rd. A few changes were made near downtown Lansing also. Sir Pizza I miss so much! I live in Ann Arbor now. I go back to visit every now and then. Thanks for sharing.
Dear Nick, you brought me fond memories, as I was in Lansing / East Lansing for a sunday one-day visit a real long time ago; to be exact, in june 1968! I was a teenager senior high school from Sao Paulo, Brazil, then living in Lapeer/MI, and my American parents drove me around on sundays to discover Michigan. I remember we parked the car at the E. Michigan Avenue and went into the Capitol for a sightseeing, when I spotted a plate laying on the front door of the Governor's office room, depicting George Romney's name. Another glimpse of memory was the existence of one WMCA building at less than a couple of blocks from the Capitol. I still have some snapshots I took from Lansing, including MSU and former Oldsmobile plant with green (or blue) glasses on its front facade, that are waiting in a carton box to be rediscovered. Thanks for the experience.
"We pulled into the outskirts of Lansing and were immediately greeted by the city's worst side." is an editorial choice and a farce. You just don't pull into the intersection of Waverly and Jolly from the highway. You either get off of 496 at Waverly and go over the Grand River or you get off of 96 at MLK and have to make quite a few turns to get to that intersection.
From the direction you started from on Jolly you were basically coming from a dead end. There are some apartment buildings and houses behind you, but Jolly Road ends back out there and goes nowhere .... so you weren't just naturally going from one point to the next off of the highway. You had to think about it and contrive a starting point of your tour of Lansing.
@@jtsunden6097 hes absolu right though. This is the reality of Lansing, whether you see that or not. One of the reasons I left. It's not even safe to live in Lansing anymore.
Dreary Lansing is where I've resided for 42 years now. I have hopes of moving to a rural location in either: upper peninsula Michigan or Maine. Thx Nick for all your cool vids, comments & info that is VERY helpful.
I grew up in Lansing in the late 60's and 70's when Oldsmobile was booming. It was a safe enough city that we could roam around without any trouble. Bus fare was 10 cents. We lived down the street from Kendon Elementary School. Had a lot great times as a kid there.
Never been there, but it isn’t a bad looking town. It looks gloomy, but I think it being a cold, overcast day and a lot of older houses make it look gloomier.
LOST ATSUKI it’s not bad in your area then lol you don’t know the hood streets then I suppose .. churchhilldowns has been the hood area for lansing for years. 21k Mel, GMC DaeDae etc is Lansing rappers from the south side.
I lived in Lansing most of my life and it gets worse by the year. It's a small city buy lots of unreported shootings going on constantly. I finally in my older age found some low income apartments in Okemos where I can walk around not stepping on needles everywhere.
I've lived in Lansing my whole life. Grew up on the west side near Grand Woods Park, lived on the south side near Penn and Jolly for a number of years, and currently ive near Eastwood Town Center. This town has its good and bad the same as everywhere else. But the local food here blows out the national chains imo. Want a pizza? Go to DeLucas on the north side. Want a great burger at a low price? Try Nip n Sip. Want some awesome breakfast? Go to Golden Harvest. And if you want good ice cream, go to any of the Quality Dairy stores literally all over town. Lots of lovely parks here, some beautiful walking trails (the River Trail you can go pretty much all through the city). We're a 90 minute drive from both Lake Michigan and Huron, but if you want a short drive to swim Hawk Island is nice. (I prefer that over Lake Lansing any day)
I'm a Lansing resident! That's so cool you came through my city! You should of went downtown East Lansing it's part of Michigan State University. It's so beautiful and lots of new updates! This video totally just popped up on my RUclips tread, it was meant to be!
I love Lansing! Of the numerous towns I’ve lived in its one of my favorite places to live. I love how diverse my neighbors are and how welcome I feel. I love having MSU and a community college as a neighbor. Every large city has pockets of crime but many of us pride ourselves in playing a role in reducing poverty and increasing the well being of our neighbors.
Bruh. Okai firstly it was cloudy ASF when he was there so it looks ruff lmao but if I'm being real the areas he went to are going to make it look bad. I would know because I live there 💀. It's kinda small but diverse and kinda boring city but it's a nice and peaceful city even know we got a bad repition.
I lived there growing up and the perfect word to describe Lansing is “meh”, it’s not a terrible place to live but it’s definitely not great either, just another boring medium sized Midwestern city.
I have fond memories, as my childhood and all of my schooling up through high school were in Lansing. However, if I were to move back to the area I would likely opt for Okemos or Haslett, etc.
I was born and spent my first 22 years in Lansing, first on South Logan Street near Jolly and then near Waverly and Saginaw. Looking back, it was a pretty good place to spend your childhood. South Logan was pretty rural at the time so it was like living in the country. As a kid you really don't mind the snow that much and there were a lot of public ice skating rinks to hang out with your friends. It was easy to study state government with the capitol handy and large industry with Oldsmobile. If you wanted culture you drove 20 minutes into East Lansing and took advantage of the vast MSU offerings. And of course during the summer you went "up north" to stay on one of a myriad of lakes. I only return now to plant relatives at Deepdale Cemetery. I'll end up there as well, some day.
Omg you my friend has to be the most interesting channel on RUclips. I have always wanted to travel the U S How amazing you are taking people on road trips that can’t go in real time. You are amazing Ty!! For the drive thru Lansing. Lol It was fun and I appreciate my Gainesville Florida even more Did you know Tom Petty is from Gainesville and his cousin is Sheriff
Nick Johnson plesse dooooo. You will love Gainesville !!! I have been here 32 yrs. Butler plaza is a place you’d never have leave cuz it had everything lol
Thanks for driving through my city on a super ugly weather day and going to all the run down areas to make it look like a dump! come back in the summer
I worked at Lansing Police at 911 for almost 20 years. When you mentioned the Capital, it brought to mind a well known story about it. It seems that Detroit and Grand Rapids were bickering about which city would be the Capital city. Well, one of the Representatives got tired of it and made the motion to make it in Lansing as a joke. Seems not too many knew it was a joke. They approved it and built the first Capital building a block east of where you were on Capital Avenue. At the corner of Washington and Ottawa a wooden building was created. Seems all the Senators and Representatives slept in that building due to the wolves, and the mosquito's. Malaria was very prevalent seeing as Lansing used to be a swamp!!!
Lansing is not the worst part of Michigan. But they'd have to try really hard to beat Flint and Detroit. Every person there would have to murder someone. Or Rob someone. Or just flat out leave.
It’s too bad you missed driving through Old Town and REO Town. From a car, you cannot see the riverwalk and art walk downtown, and the Potter Park Zoo. Yes, Lansing isn’t necessarily pretty or wealthy but it didn’t help taking this video at the worst time of year. A disservice to the residents. This video doesn’t show any snow (unusual for January), any leaves, many PEOPLE as if the entire city is vacant. Yes, it must have been easier to video this way. I liked the history and background, but visit the Pure Michigan website for a different view. ✌️
@@DarkKnight-dq7ek to each their own, there are worse places and most places have pockets of sketchy areas. It’s southern central location makes it easy to travel to other sites and it’s more affordable than other places too.
Nick bad news! I was enjoying this video for the third time- one of your best in my view. Anyways I was looking forward to spending some time with Mappy's whole family, because I knew they would appear at the end to point at the subscribe button. I was enjoying a chat with Mrs. Mappy and their son flipped me the bird!
Thanks for the great video and the nostalgia. My family lived in Spartan Village East Lansing in '76 - '80, when our dad went to MSU. It was great living there when you're a kid. Loads of space to play and biked all over the campus. I had friends from all over the world, whose parents also are students at MSU. Imagine me and my brother - an Indonesian, was once the Paper Boy for Ervin "Magic" Johnson at one time, delivering Lansing State Journal. 😁 I remember there seems to be more people than on the video. Or was it too cold for people to be out.
Other Lansing facts Magic Johnson is from here (went to Everett High School the school on the South side) Malcolm X lived here for a part of his life as well.
He dated my cousin Meredith in high school she was a beauty. There’s a picture they have of him standing next to our late Aunt Ethel’s Christmas tree. Guess which was taller. 🤣 True story.
Sorry. Nothing comes to mind. At that time stamp it looks like it is off of jolly rd on the south side of lansing. What do you want to know about the area?
Lansing will always be home, this brings back a lot of fond memories, especially the part though downtown. We had season tickets for the lug nuts for their first season . I grew up on the southwest side, it is sad to see that it has changed a lot since I lived there. Thanks for the memories and Go State!
Being from Lansing and the fact I don't drive and I walk around it'd be hilarious if I saw myself in this video somewhere. Lol Your video goes through a lot of areas I frequent. Lol. I've been trying to see if I can spot myself. I walk down Mich Ave all the time so I'm surprised I'm not in the video. Lol.
I grew up here throught the late 90s and into the 2010s and it was a hard place to be a kid in those days. Violence and drugs were everywhere and I left with a bad record and a drug problem. Ive been away now for over 10 years and ive spent the last 4 of those sober and leading a happy life. My family still lives here and theyre all still struggling with drugs and crime and violence. I wish it would change because a lot of good people live here and no other choice but to survive the only way they can. Its not there fault the world forget t about them.
It's one of the many reasons I had to leave. So much despair. My friends were doing too many drugs and drinking and I needed to start over. I miss it but life could've been very different for me if I stayed.
I'm from Brazil and I had the privilege to be twice in Michigan, where I have a bunch of awesome friends, and I have a love affair with this state! Michigan, its little townships and its charming capital are just hands down! Love everything about Michigan
I save your video in MP3 format, then I try to listen this MP3 as a voice prepare to sleep, beside my pillow so I can sleep, and it works 😁😁😘 (I have problem with INSOMNIA.) I can fall asleep by listening to your background music and your voice in MP3 format. Thank you very much 🙏
I actually moved TO Michigan voluntarily. From the dregs of the East Coast. MICHIGAN HALL of FAME: Tom Selleck, Lily Tomlin, The Romantics, Knack lead singer, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Mitch Ryder, Madonna, Jeff Daniel's, Eminem, Kid Rock, Bob Seeger, Ted Nugent, Michael Moore, Tim Allen, Grand Funk Railroad, The White Stripes, Diana Ross, Casey Kasem, Glenn Frey (Eagles), Jane's Caan, Tony Dungy, Danny Thomas (also Toledo), Magic Johnson, Larry Page, Stevie Wonder, Sonny Bono, Jack Paar, Danica Patrick, Commander Cody, ? & The Mysterians, Stephen Sagall. Name another state that has produced this much fame. The charm of Michigan is the fact that everyone bitches about being here. I've never seen so much self loathing. That's what keeps people here. Have lived in at least 10 places in different regions of the country, and there is no place like MICHIGAN. Michiganders love to hate the beautiful state we live in. There is a metaphysical bond there if you're willing to look for it. The road ends in Detroit, never mind the potholes!!...................................edit... MICHIGAN HALL OF FAME (missed on the first round): Aretha Franklin, Thomas Edison, Gerald Ford, Lee Iacocca, Elmore Leonard, Charles Lindbergh, Henry Ford, Joe Louis, Malcolm X, Gilda Radner, Mitt Romney, Sinbad, John Smoltz, Serena William's, Dan Gilbert, Francis Ford Coppola, Christie Brinkley.............you tube constantly puts in apostrophes where they shouldn't be......Should be James Caan.....forgot Roger Penske (think he's a Michigander).........Have lived in 10 different places for an extended period of time in each. Rural and urban. MICHIGAN querks: Speeding fast on the freeway and driving through existing traffic on both lanes, streetlights hanging on traffic wire over intersections, telling you where a city is by using your hand as a map, follow through at intersection to make a left turn and circle back U-turn, over represented American cars compared to rest of the country, severe self loathing of living here and expecting no one to even consider living here voluntarily, Detroit hate, Detroit love, Detroit love and hate at the same time in the same sentence, Detroit and Detroit alone being a topic of conversation, still not being able to figure out what a person from Michigan is called, hating Michigan but returning to visit or live later and still hating it, Vernors, love of state, hate of state, whining constantly about the weather, counting the minutes until you can get out of this miserable state, time delay at a green light for traffic to start up in Detroit, Dream Cruise (upwards of 50,000 classic car traffic jam on Woodward Avenue in August, the biggest cruise in the country), Detroit ( just being Detroit), most affluent zip code in country a mere 10 miles from one of the poorest zip codes in country (upper Oakland to Central Woodward, Highland Park), Mile Roads, only point in US north of a point in Canada, two peninsulas, deer living on an urban island, six lane surface streets with virtually no traffic, only time tanks have ever been rolling down city streets for security during uprising, only island where autos are banned, county with lowest population density in eastern third of US.
I have lived in Michigan most of my life, Was a great place to live as a youngster, I lived in Cadillac for about 6 years from 1983 to 89, Had a cottage and always vacarioned there , I moved to Bradenton Fla in 1992 til 2004 , then moved back to Michigan, I don't like Winters here anymore after lived in Fla, Michigan Summers is when you should be here, now that i'm older warmer weather is better , but it is a nice City, You did not drive many of the nicer areas as neighborhoods go, East Lansing is a big draw because of MSU, Okemos, etc. Glad you took us thru the tour though , Thank You!!
Air masses move across Lake Michigan towards Michigan, pick up moisture from the lake, and clouds form. This is also the reason for lake-effect precipitation in the state.
Lansing is cool & diverse w/ diff types of people, and has been full of energy at times in the past. Just during this coronavirus it’s been pretty dead since the campus is closed and a lotta shit. I feel it could be an even greater city if they’d fix the roads a bit more even
I lived in Lansing for several year (West Saginaw & Jenison) and graduated from Sexton High School. I also worked for a time at the Fisher Body Plant on Verlinden Avenue earning enough money to finish college. Its a shame to see how far Lansing has fallen.
Another few fun facts for Lansing: What once was the Lansing School for the Blind on Willow St, on the north end of downtown, is the school that Stevie Wonder graduated from. It has since been sitting mostly vacant, with part of the campus used as a senior assisted living facility. Many old railway spurs in Lansing have been abandoned due to the closure of many small businesses on the branch and the closure of Oldsmobile, including all the old factory lots and the factory yard/ rail loading docks. However, the Adrian and Blissfield Railroad company (ADBF) was under a Norfolk Southern (NS) subsidiary contract for the Lansing and Jackson railroad from 2010 to 2020, which they recently purchased from NS to continue operating small businesses on the many spurs in Lansing. ADBF also operates in their name-sake area, in the small business district area of Adrian and Blissfield, and north to Ann Arbor. Before NS bought the line in 1998, it was shortly owned by Conrail from 1971-1996. Conrail failed to operate much on the line, with few passenger services after the fall of the Penn Central Railroad, and only operated the line to keep services to the few businesses open on the branch. Before Conrail, the railroad was run by the defunct companies of Michigan Central Railroad and the Penn Central Railroad, and was the Lansing switching point for the Peir-Marquette Railroad which intersected at the now CSX Einsel Yard on the north end. They only run between Gaylord and Grand Rapids today. There does happen to be a dinner train for the public in Charlotte, Michigan that runs a loop around that area's old portion of the Michigan Central/ Penn Central passenger line between Grand Rapids and Detroit. As far as I know, the line is terminated in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing, and either side of the rail loop near Charlotte.
I’ve never been to the Michigan State campus but I’ve heard more than once that it’s one of the nicest in the Big 10. A former classmate of mine worked in Iraq and Afghanistan for an engineering firm that designed/built a lot of our military bases over there. He once described each base as being as big as a Big 10 university campus and said there was a disincentive for the U.S. to pull out over there because we’d invested so much $’s to leave it all behind. And we wonder why so many of our cities back home look so forlorn, not really including Lansing/East Lansing which looked pretty good - for one thing I didn’t see much if any overhead utility wires that are so prevalent and brings down the appearance of urban & suburban areas in the northeast.
I went to MSU and walked to every class because I loved how pretty campus was. MSU started as an agricultural school and has a big agricultural dept, so there's lots of gardens and such, plus the river that runs through the main campus.
I live in Lansing and this is a pretty contrived video from the start. Didn't film how you got to your starting location did you, Nick? Your edits along Michigan Avenue were curious cutting off the true character of it. Funny how you start with a construction zone to leave Lansing and enter East Lansing changing the music from so sad to happy.
I was born and raised in Lansing. Grew up on the East side. Lived there for nearly 30 years. Even though I really liked your drive through the MSU campus, there are many other places that better represent the city then where you went. The east side is good and then there's Potter Park zoo and the Oldsmobile plants, that are still there. Maybe it was because it was a super cloudy day, that made the tour so bad. Go there on a sunny day and take a look at the South side. I have been gone about 20 years and I can't believe how much that has changed along Michigan Avenue.
Was born in Lansing at St Lawrence Hospital now its part of Sparrow Michigan State university very nice during spring Summer and Fall i grew up west of Lansing city called Grand Ledge if anyone is familiar with baseball John Smoltz played for the Waverly Warriors and also was drafted by Detroit Tigers but Tigers needed a pitcher so they traded him to the Atlanta Braves for Doyle Alexander To me Lansing was really a hardship city dont really have and real business to relax and eat if you cross Waverly on Saginaw St that is Eaton County area called Delta Township really nice for resturants Lansing Mall is there.if you like donuts place called Quality Dairy milk products are excellent donuts are fantastic guess i wrote too much thanks Nick
Imagine Jackson being the capitol of Michigan...😵 I moved away from Lansing 7 months ago after living there my whole life and never thought I'd miss it...but I do.
Lived in Lansing for 50 years. Like many Michigan cities it is plagued with poor city leadership, and planing. It is a gold mine waiting to be harvested. With the right vision this could be a crown jewel.
I came from Flint area to North Lansing I LOVE it here--night+day difference--Im right next to the Capitol, 10 mins from MSU, Old Town and the river walk, our house worth less than $100k and we have ZERO violent crime in our neighborhood
Wow amazing I remember being there in 2015, at MSU I visited some of the places you had shown here and my heart just got melted, also never imagine myself how many places I couldn't had enough time to visit cuz of classes. Beautiful memories from there.
This brings back so many fond memories....lived in Lansing 30 years...raised my kids there in neighborhoods you are showing and my kids still live there...I live in TN since 2013 and hate it..moving back to Lansing in the spring..best part of the hood is people there will sit on their porches playing euchre etc..yes crime but if you stay real no problems really...alot to do in Lansing also....
Our family has lived on Lansing's East side since 1945. Lansing is a beautiful city and has a lot to offer. I am so very proud to be from Lansing Michigan!
Choosing a bright sunny spring or summer day would have given a totally different atmosphere to the piece. It's as if you deliberately chose to see Lansing in the worst light, both literally and figuratively.
I'm from Chicago but lived here for 20 years been gone 5 years in texas now stevie wonder went to the blind school on willow I went there it was called mmpsa mid Michigan public school academy wow memory
I kind of wish he would've went to East Lansing in a separate video too cuz that's literally another city if the video was about the city of Lansing. East side of Lansing I get. East Lansing (where MSU is at) is a different city. People who aren't from here may not know that.
I guess that if I judged Lansing and East Lansing by the videos that you took, I would question why anyone would ever live there. Lansing is an area of hidden surprises, and you didn't see any of them. If you ever want to take a tour and see the true nature of the city and surrounding areas, please drop me a line; you missed the good and are showing very little other than the main drags, which I will be the first to admit are not all that wonderful.
Thank you for your video. You chose your music well. Watching from the Netherlands, I wonder if Lansing is undergoing a renaissance of sorts. Although there is much urban sprawl, empty lots, car parks, and uninspiring architecture, the downtown does boast some striking, stunning buildings--old and new.
That’s so crazy.. you actually captured my house on here haha. Lansing isn’t the greatest though.. I wish they would add more fun into it. And better roads for that matter!
🗣 I LOVE MY CITY 517!!! It’s nothing compared to Detriot or Saginaw or Flint when you talking “Bad” but still those cities are just in need of rebuilding.... if someone comes here (Lansing) and think it’s bad it’s apparent that you’ve only seen suburbs your whole life... 🤷🏽♂️
Here's my entire Unboxing America Series: ruclips.net/p/PLq-_cmf3H6yqgM1vGG305six5T7dqGURF
I lived, studied and worked in East Lansing area for 5 years. This one's making me feel nostalgic. The people in Michigan were so nice and friendly. Hope Michigan can transform its economy successfully.
Some areas are doing great, some aren't, the problem in Michigan has more to deal with inequality in economic growth.
Yeah, that’ll happen during a lockdown
I was born and grew up in Lansing, and this video reminded me that most of the time, with exceptions in the summer, the area weather is cloudy and gray. I never paid any attention to that until I moved away for a few years and then returned. Dark gray, rain and snow, beautiful fall days, but then a snowy cold winter. Not sure I could live there all year around again. But I still love the area and it was a great place to "come of age" in the '50's , '60's and '70's. Go Sparty!!
To whoever reads this I hope you have a lovely day 😁😁.
You too.
anyone else actually live in lansing? 🙋🏻♀️
thomas golden lol I feel that
It's not that bad is it?
Nick Johnson it’s really not that bad, it’s beautiful in the spring and fall especially! plus it helps that i’m a huge MSU fan :)

@@deuser that's true, but it still technically touches Clinton County, it definitely lies more in Ingham and Eaton County
Back in the 60s Lansing had not yet mastatized into Clinton and Eaton counties like it has since. It had the good manners to stay in Ingham County, of which the county seat is a town called Mason.
True. I went to Sexton HS and lived in Clinton Co., Lansing address.
I live in Clinton county, and still live in Lansing!
When you drive through the hood in Lansing make a stop at East Side Fishfry - they have some of the best wings and fish

I live in Lansing on the eastside. I think the neighborhood you traveled is not the condition of most neighborhoods. Moores River dr area, Eastside, Westside, and many other areas were missed. Lansing is really a beautiful city with major construction ongoing in many places.
Yeah there's definitely beautiful parts of Lansing that aren't being shown here
I live in Delta township and it’s great here and people are friendly and take good care of their homes
Whoever's been running your town

I live here now, for about 5 years. I'm from Jackson originally. It's definitely... Okay. I heard that it was once a better place to live and work, right now it's a bit on the downtrodden side.
There are nice parts of town, though, such as Old Town on the Northside.

I always wanted to go from 1 city to another to see the fun, crowded, sadness, emptiness from other cities. your music fits with the video
I had heard Lansing, up until the 80s was the “ auto capitol of the world” meaning more cars were made per - capita than a city in the world. A small city of 150:k had about 50 k working in auto industry
Detroit area
Yes there were 3 or more large auto factories here in Lansing. My uncle used to work on robots at them. All but 1 large complex have closed and been demolished. Oldsmobile HQ is here in Lansing, now a vacant office building. Lansing being smaller than Detroit and have so many factories made the economy hugely dependent.
@@Nphen yup, don’t forget Fisher Body, Motor wheel, American sunroof and all the drop forges around too
@@Nphen Dont forget up to the 70's Lansing had Diamond Reo and John Bean factories operating, along with 3 Oldsmobile plants, a Fisher Body plant, and a ton of suppliers and forges for all those plants making parts for them.

Most cities do, Detroit is horrible so is flint, but its unfortunate a lot of cities are still bad in Michigan just not like the D
No doubt about that!
It is. Lansing isn’t nearly as dilapidated or dangerous.
I also miss the old Putt Putt and Frosty Corner. Good times!
Was born in St Lawrence hospital, (now Sparrow) 1960. I live in Denver,Co. now. My mom 96, still lives in the same "home on Jerome" street for almost 70 years!
Oh! Well, hello from Custer Ave 😊
I usually do I was in a generous mood that day
Don’t forget waverly and jolly area
The south is getting VERY bad btw idk wit part u from though so...

I don't think there are any single groups or people to blame for the decline in the area, but it's sad to see a place with so much history and community feel so empty and soulless.
wow you should write more often!!
I grew up on Lansing South side.Things began to take a turn in the late eighties it seemed.I had to move my own family away.
When did east Lansing decline? I mean I'm completely clueless. Its been about 15 years since I've been there.was it in that time period or do you mean same time as detroit declining
Edit i didn't hear him say about when the decline happened before I posted! 😆
@@scummydummy Lansing hasn't been in decline, it bottomed out in the 1990's like a lot of places did. Except the southwest side (Jolly/Waverly area), the city has generally improved since then, Lansing will probably finally see its population on the rise again in the 2020 census.

Hi Jessica. i LOVE MICHIGAN!!!!
You should do this again in spring/summer. This weather makes Lansing look so dreary but it is very lively
Marcio glad you could experience it again even virtually!
Not really
From the direction you started from on Jolly you were basically coming from a dead end. There are some apartment buildings and houses behind you, but Jolly Road ends back out there and goes nowhere .... so you weren't just naturally going from one point to the next off of the highway. You had to think about it and contrive a starting point of your tour of Lansing.
JT Sunden, you are right! Even if you are not from Lansing, you know the worst parts are either north side, or Baker street area!
@@jtsunden6097 hes absolu right though. This is the reality of Lansing, whether you see that or not. One of the reasons I left. It's not even safe to live in Lansing anymore.
there's good sides to Lansing?
Dreary Lansing is where I've resided for 42 years now. I have hopes of moving to a rural location in either: upper peninsula Michigan or Maine. Thx Nick for all your cool vids, comments & info that is VERY helpful.
I grew up in Lansing in the late 60's and 70's when Oldsmobile was booming. It was a safe enough city that we could roam around without any trouble. Bus fare was 10 cents. We lived down the street from Kendon Elementary School. Had a lot great times as a kid there.
I grew up in the 50's a block from Kendon subdivision on E. Jolly Rd. before Kendon was there. The house I grew up in is still there.

Never been there, but it isn’t a bad looking town. It looks gloomy, but I think it being a cold, overcast day and a lot of older houses make it look gloomier.
Yes gloomy. I'll do a road trip in the summer and things will look much different.
It’s never sunny in Michigan in winter because of the moisture from the Great Lakes but around may and June it’s beautiful

@* static Hey, I grew up on the East side, by Foster and Frandor. There are some nice areas near Grosbeck and there's Old Town.

I have fond memories, as my childhood and all of my schooling up through high school were in Lansing. However, if I were to move back to the area I would likely opt for Okemos or Haslett, etc.
As a former Lansing resident, it is decidedly mid. Parts of Eaton County are nice.

Is it a safe city overall?
@@lttrhd I think so. Crime statistics are a Lil overblown compared to what it's actually like for most the city.
Lansing is not the worst part of Michigan. But they'd have to try really hard to beat Flint and Detroit. Every person there would have to murder someone. Or Rob someone. Or just flat out leave.

Why does Michigan always seem gloomy on your videos, weatherwise
Air masses move across Lake Michigan towards Michigan, pick up moisture from the lake, and clouds form. This is also the reason for lake-effect precipitation in the state.

Another few fun facts for Lansing:
What once was the Lansing School for the Blind on Willow St, on the north end of downtown, is the school that Stevie Wonder graduated from.

And now Clara's is closed! 😭😭😭
There are plenty of trees.l like this video as well your country if I get the chance.dfnatly I'll come your country.nick Johnson 😃😄
Lame
@@NickJohnson Nice self analysis.
Forget the mechanic someone needs a new car👍😋
Haha I know so sad
Looked like a blown head gasket!
I tried to warn you at 3:05. 🤣 That right lane at that stop light is hell. 🤣
I love this video but there is so much more of Lansing that you missed. It’s pretty cool though to watch a video and recognize every area.
Rich W I was born at St Lawrence as well and my mom still works there!
Best comment of the day Rich!

did u ever move here lmao
I hope you do a Toledo one!
Good ole Glass City
I will eventually. Probably late spring
Ama ❤️❤️
Hey Nick and mappy.have a happy weekend 😃😃
Vaithy Mappy says you're his favorite!!
We love living here in Lansing Michigan after 25 years in Detroit, Lansing is Heaven!
I miss the beautiful lakes and the Riverfront park and the nature trails. I am a thousand miles away now but the city I'm in is a pretty one.
Our family has lived on Lansing's East side since 1945. Lansing is a beautiful city and has a lot to offer. I am so very proud to be from Lansing Michigan!
Love these driving videos!
Choosing a bright sunny spring or summer day would have given a totally different atmosphere to the piece. It's as if you deliberately chose to see Lansing in the worst light, both literally and figuratively.
I'm watching this while cooking !
What did you eat?
@@NickJohnson Puertorrican yellow rice with casserole pink beans and seasoned pork chops. Very good.
I'm from Chicago but lived here for 20 years been gone 5 years in texas now stevie wonder went to the blind school on willow I went there it was called mmpsa mid Michigan public school academy wow memory
I can't help but think "he's not from Michigan" when he says that 40 degrees is chilly.
I grew up on the southside of Lansing and shii ain’t what it used to be 💯
Truuu
Me too! Logan (MLK), Holmes area. Its changed dramatically.
@@andybovee827 💯 it’s so many killings it’s really wild
I will always love my hometown, but I'm so glad I dont live there anymore.
@@SkyTheDripper is the crime really that bad?
You should have driven through the Westside of the town
How come?
Why.
Don't worry Nick, you did not miss anything.
Yeah that would've been nice. I could've seen my old high school (Sexton) in the vid along with the Lansing mall too.
I grew up on the North West side
I kind of wish he would've went to East Lansing in a separate video too cuz that's literally another city if the video was about the city of Lansing.
East side of Lansing I get. East Lansing (where MSU is at) is a different city. People who aren't from here may not know that.
Looks like a Chinese ghost town. 😊👋❤☁️❤☁️❤
Chinese?
I guess that if I judged Lansing and East Lansing by the videos that you took, I would question why anyone would ever live there. Lansing is an area of hidden surprises, and you didn't see any of them. If you ever want to take a tour and see the true nature of the city and surrounding areas, please drop me a line; you missed the good and are showing very little other than the main drags, which I will be the first to admit are not all that wonderful.
Shaw hall. Hubbard hall. Rivertrail neighborhood. Breslin center. Case hall....From high school kid to a real man in society. Thx MSU and East Lansing
I feel those feels bro
Thank you for your video. You chose your music well. Watching from the Netherlands, I wonder if Lansing is undergoing a renaissance of sorts. Although there is much urban sprawl, empty lots, car parks, and uninspiring architecture, the downtown does boast some striking, stunning buildings--old and new.
Yes Marcel. And it's too bad the sun wasn't out that day.
I'll give Lansing one thing, at least you drove through Lansing. Come to Atlanta, you'll be sitting rather than driving.
I've done Atlanta traffic once it's the worst I've ever seen
Lol. It's a big city so I bet. Lol. I have traffic story of being in Chicago once. Lol.
Come to Atlanta on a early Sunday Morning. It's about the only way you will actually be able to drive.
That’s so crazy.. you actually captured my house on here haha. Lansing isn’t the greatest though.. I wish they would add more fun into it. And better roads for that matter!
No way - wave next time!
What can you tell me about christiansen rd? Th street at 1:36?
All my early memories are from Lansing, all of grade school. Lived in married student housing, leftover WWII barracks on the MSU campus.
How he took I96 East to Jolly and Waverly remains a mystery.
Lansing and East Lansing definitely don’t look as bad as Detroit and Flint. That Michigan state capitol building does look very nice. 👀
4:27- Chevy engine? No, that's when the light turned yellow. It looks like you ran this red light.
I run them a lot
