When I've started cycling I bought second hand Shimano R132 with velcro and a ratchet. Loving them, I think I'll stick to velcro when I upgrade (that was a pun)
The pros are paid to wear whatever the brand sells that sortof maybe fits their feet. We are not pros, thankfully. We mortals should visit a shop that carries a wide variety of brands / fits, and make sure that they actually measure our foot dimensions before selling us a shoe. Most of us are not suited to narrow Italian shoes with cleats too far forward (though some people are of course!) Please check out the Bike Fit Tuesday series on Francis Cade’s channel, they have amazing videos there about shoe fit & shoe selection.
"We are not pros. Thankfully." I don't share the same sentiment on the thankfully part. It would have been a pretty cool career if we had the skill and discipline.
Sarah Gigante sharing that her Fizik cleats are too far forward... *insert bike fit James smug face here* Tried some Powerstraps a while back and honestly felt like I was on my toes too, at what point to Fizik change there philosophy on this, seems a fairly universal problem with their shoes!
If so many of even the Pro riders need custom wider shoes, maybe Fizik should recognize that their shoes are too narrow. Or at least offer a wide foot option, I've tried them on before and they're ridiculously narrow.
Their shoes are wider than they used to be. Have you tried Fizik lately? I started using them about 9 years ago. They became my favorite. I wore a 48 and the shoes fit like a glove. Almost a year ago, I bought a new pair of their top spec road shoes and had to return them in exchange for a 47. And it is a little wider than I would like. They have apparently changed their lasts. The fit is pretty different now.
@@DaveCM thanks David, it was a couple years ago that I tried them. I might try on a pair again, but I've since found Lake shoes, that offer a wide fit that suits my feet like a slipper, perfect fit.
It's hard to watch content that's so painfully restricted and driven by commercial interests. Hearing from riders whose shoe choice is not confined to the sponsor's range would be far more interesting. For balance, I had never broken a saddle in 50 years of cycling until my Ti railed Fizik Arione saddle shell snapped right across the middle going over a minor bump. It was, of course, out of warranty, and I'm not a fat lad.
I thought that too, slanted that the pros get custom Fiziks yet the paying public have to search and pay dearly for the benefit, tho Fizik is the last (lol) brand I'd choose, Lakes are the best for wide feet..
When I went looking for new cycling shoes several years ago now, I went shoe shopping various brands, had a chance to go for Fizik shoes, at a very good price as in cost, because the bike shop owner was dropping Fizik. Unfortunately my feat are reasonably wide, but I have a toe that crooked and not one of the Fizik shoes would accomodate. Ended up with a pair of Northwave, which I could get in a wide fit.
I know its not related to this video (other than Ollie is bridging factor), but have just seen Ollie’s Orbea film on GCN+ and he’s like a kid in sweet shop at Orbea HQ! The way his face lit up really showed the kid inside looking forward to trying all the bikes!
LOL, I mostly enjoy GCN video’s, some more than others, but this one is pretty lame. “So why did you choose these particular shoes?” “Well, I’m new in this team and these are what I got” 🤦🏻♂️
I've been thinking a lot about things like this. Most pro riders that transfer to better teams have done well at their previous team but they need to change to new material because of sponsors. It's strange: they work all year to dial in everything to perfection and when they get results they have to start all over again. Shoes and highly tuned positions are a big part of getting results and this is what's changing all at once. Imagine Filippo Ganna not being allowed to use his Most cockpit, what would that do to his results?!
Not one of your better videos. I appreciate you need to ensure commercial sponsorship of the channel by advertising but this didn't really live up to the title of the video. Neither pro offered any explanation as to how or why they chose a particular shoe, and as they could only choose Fizik it was always going to be a bit pointless as there were no 'other ' shoes to compare against or chose from.
Shimano SH-RP3 in black with ratchet and velcro. Probably as far away from any trends as you can get but they fit perfectly and I even bought another pair of them. Out of curiosity I ordered a pair of Shimano SH-RC3 with Boa dials but they haven't arrived yet.
I agree. Fizik shoes are too narrow and their placement is too further up. Hence why I wear Lakes. They have plenty of wide lasts and their cleats are slammed as far back. But, Fizik makes really nice shoes. If they ever go wider, I mean as wide as Lakes and Bonts, I will definitely hop back on the Fizik train
Recently bought a pair of fizik Vento infinito carbon 2 wide toe box & i must say, they are the most comfortable cycling shoes i've ever worn! expensive, but with a Strava discount it took the sting out of it a little bit.
What model Fizik shoes were those bluish-gray ones that Emma Norsgaard and some of the other Movistar women were wearing last season? I think a few of the men were wearing them also.
Boa on a fondo .. lace for chill rides.. btw I ruined a boa dial and turns out it has warranty (check with your LBS).. Boa sent me left and right dials for free
Just 1 time through the mud and they throw it in the bin. I understand keeping their sponsor equipment looking good but even after washing them surely those shoes are still good.
I had the Infinito R1 (which are very expensive). The Boa Dials ripped out of the upper material. I contacted Fizik but they did not answer. I will never buy this brand again.
I buy my shoes the old fashion way. I get a clerk or shoe sales person to measure my feet(the rt foot is longer after I broke it at work), I then try on a sample to check the fit see if I like the style, then I go home and order them on line.
What type of pedals should I use for cyclocross with lots of mud and running? Currently I use roadie clip in pedals and shoes and I usually need a knife to clean them after a ride
Lake models that use their competition last are their widest offering and the leather upper is far more forgiving if your feet dont match the shape perfectly, unlike the tub in Bont shoes which is solid and can be painful, the heat moulding will only tweak the shape very slightly. I find Bont are becoming less suitable for wider feet in their recent models...
Having a custom shoe made for an athlete isn't new. Footballers who get a shoe sponsorship will have custom made shoe to measure to their feet. The shoe may have the same colourway as the retail version. But they are not the same shoe as the one you buy from the store. Fizik is just making custom made to measure shoe to riders. I bet cobblers at Fizik can copy any bike shoe feature from another brand preffered by a rider. To keep the rider happy to wear a Fizik shoe.
Velcro or Boa Dials - which would you choose for your shoes? Let us know in the comments👇
The 80's called and they want their Velcro back, Boa dials are the bestest.
When I've started cycling I bought second hand Shimano R132 with velcro and a ratchet. Loving them, I think I'll stick to velcro when I upgrade (that was a pun)
Boa as long as the6 ratchet both directions. 👍
Velcro, same as my work shoes.
I have Fizik Boa and love them.

Most teams allow riders to choose whatever shoes they like - but sadly for Movistar riders they don't have a choice.
Yeah. I really like that series a lot. Very informative.
Thanks for the link!

Pro shoe choice: What about custom insoles?
My man spittin facts here!
How to make a bad shoe good and a good shoe bad 👍🏼
How they choose:
Turn up to work
Are given the choice of whatever their sponsor wants them to wear
Get on bike
Exactly the opposite of what was said on the video

It's a problem for Americans and Asians. Their shoes fit the majority in Europe which is why they make them that way.
I was hoping you were going to talk some of the velcro riders.

As people usually wear two shoes, I had the impression that this ad was 16 minutes long instead of 8... :-(
Ho do pros choose shoes. They wear what there sponsors offer them and then customize as necessary it's pretty damn simple.
Simple answer, they don’t. Nice Fizik advert!
my feet absolutely kill after fiziks
They need some of Tom Pidcocks secret dirt shedding treatment for those shiny white shoes!
Ollie why didn't you ask about clip style/ brand? Shimano, Look, Speedplay? Would be nice to know.
Taking a cue from cleaning golf shoes, the best ive found is spray furniture polish. Clean and protects at the same time….
Some Cif cream cleaner and a toothbrush, then rinse off with warm water. Been using this method for years to keep everything sparkly white.
When making a video about how pros pick from the entire range… maybe start with a pro who actually picked her shoe 🙄
and one that didn't have to have custom shoes made because their standard range is so unsuitable
I went to look through their sponsors to find a link to Fizik shoes and the GCN sponsors lists only DMT Shoes!
surprised fizik let you guys hop on after the channel ditched them for selle italia and dmt 😂
Boa Dials ! I have thin feet, it's hard to find a shoe that fit & doesn't break the bank.
I think it's fair to say that the bikes and equipment have absolutely nothing to do with grand tour wins.
Of course if they are caked with mudd like his were you have to soap and water first, let dry and use the polish after that
Everyone loves new shoes…. Not new cycling shoes. I love a nice broken in pair.
I normally chose one of the - mostly only two - available pairs. UK15 :/

Boa dials, much easier to adjust when I'm riding
That really is the biggest advantage to boa dials 👌
Pros use what the team says , unless they have contracts that allow them use a personal sponsors shoes
If you are Hanseeno, you make your own.
I don’t need to watch this video to know the answer. They wear who will pay them the most or whatever is mandated from their team.
Ollie has new bike Dogma F😱
White shoes, try magic erasers!
Shoes should be a personal choice, and not influenced by a sponsor.......
Budget for me. I buy Chinese made shoes online for about £12 a pair. I find them great value !
best shoe is the who pays the most

I recommend spd style pedals. Typically used on mountain bikes.
Not of relevance, and not of importance ... At least not to me.
