Would Arya make a better main character than Eragon? An Inheritance Cycle character study

  • This is for people who might be tired of the farm boy to hero trope. Let's imagine that instead of Eragon, Arya was the main character of this series. I think she deserved to be.
    Who do you think are other side characters that could have been main characters?

    Arya is one of my favorite fantasy characters ever, I've never read the Inheritance Cycle but Arya would be an AMAZING dragon rider haha

      Oh my god you're talking about a character in TIC and not GoT that makes so much more sense, I'd delete my comment but tbh this is pretty funny

      I was worried about that! Game of Thrones is way more popular than The Inheritance Cycle, and Arya is spelled the same in both.
      I’m glad you didn’t delete the first comment, because it’s still true!

    Arya is by far my favorite character in all books I've read so far. When I first read Inheritance Cicle, about my 10's, I was shocked to discover Arya was the Princess.
    At my first time reading I was very angry. Eragon and Arya should be together at the end. But as the time was passing I come to the conclusion that was way better the end as it is.
    Could you please make a video about Eragon's story?

      Edinaldo Ribeiro I read them as an adult and I still thought the same things as you😂 Although now I’m glad they didn’t end up together.
      Eragon as a character is not on my current plan, but he’ll make it there eventually.

    I think Eragon works better because of the farm boy to hero trope and you have a lot more room for character growth over the course of several books. Maybe a single book that focuses on her perspective would be really awesome.

    • @TiffanyRussell

      Eragon being younger and less experienced does leave a lot of room for growth for his character. I would also love at least one book from her perspective.

    I like Arya, but I think Eragon works better as the main protagonist. He is a stereotyped character, as a farm boy, but it just works. He asks about everything because he doesn't know the world and cultures until then, and so do we. We make a journey along with Eragon and Saphira, but I don't think Arya would work like them. She is much stronger and experienced, so many of the situations would be so much easier to be solved, reducing the tension at many parts. Besides that, we see Eragon improving along the books, but Arya doesn't need an evolution at most part. But don't get me wrong, I really like her, and I think would have been nice to read her point of view as Roran and Nasuada :P

    • @TiffanyRussell
      @TiffanyRussell  2 года назад +1

      With Arya as the main character, it would absolutely be a different story. She would easily overcome what Eragon struggles with, so her growth would be different. I still think it would be cool.

  • @acdragonrider

    If an Eragon series is made again, I would definitely like to see her get more screen time and importance. I always looked up to Arya too. Such an exemplar of duty and service. It’s all about the job with her.
    One thing I found ironic is that Paolini’s protagonist in his newest book Sea of Stars, Kira, reminded me greatly of Arya. She’s not the complete same but some aspects of Kira mirror her
    One teeny nitpick. I feel you didn’t give Arya’s regard for Eragon enough credit. What you said about him shooting Eragon down is true. It’s the big picture but she also never truly looked down on him at least imo.
    I do like that they didn’t end up together but I would like them to possibly move in that direction when Eragon is older and more mature. Say end of book five or that new trilogy

    • @TiffanyRussell
      @TiffanyRussell  3 года назад

      Arya is a wonderful character. It’s possible Arya and Kira are similar if Paolini has trouble writing female characters. Then he would focus on the parts of writing a female protagonist that he thinks he’ll do well at or that he understands.
      As for Arya’s regard for Eragon, perhaps I downplayed it too much because I was focusing on the romantic part. She was definitely very loyal and a good friend, and treated him more kindly than some other people who could could only see a young human. I do you think they could end up together when he is older, but that remains to be seen.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @acdragonrider
      @acdragonrider 3 года назад

      @@TiffanyRussell I do wonder how much Paolini actually knows about women because that would definitely impact how he approaches them in his books. I know he said in an interview once that Roran and Katrina were really based on his parents. As for Angela, that’s his sister of course 😂
      And yeah that’s completely fine what you said about Arya. A lot of elves really didn’t like Eragon. Like Vanir at first. The difference is that Arya places duty so highly that she cannot help but support Eragon even if she might doubt and belittle him especially through books 1 and 2.

    I totally agree with this! Arya is my favorite character from the series and I think too many people see her as overly perfect. But the thing is, we see her through Eragon's POV and he idealizes her (which, as we see during the festival and fairth scenes, makes her deeply uncomfortable). As you astutely noticed, she has depth and flaws that make her a really fascinating character.

    • @TiffanyRussell

    Personally, I really like Murtagh. He's more like the Vegeta in this story with Eragon being like goku or Sasuke & Naruto etc. From Murtagh's POV probably felt like Eragon has everything going for him and he has this massive chip on his shoulder. I'd love to see a video detailing Murtagh the way you detailed Arya.
    I'd love to see a story or comic with Galbatorix's rise since I never find good stories following the "villian" except in star wars where you can read up on some sith lords like "Darth Plaguies," "Darth Bane Series," "Darth Revan," "Darth Maul: Saboteur" all books I've read and enjoyed.
    But I'd hate to read a full book on Galbatorix or Murtagh as I like leaving things up to mystery, interpretation & head cannon. Too often when we get a back story, instead of opening up more questions, the author answers questions and closes the story off to further speculation.
    In that vein, I'd love to see a prequel book with a very biased POV from Morzan. We can learn more about the rise of Galbatorix, Murtagh, Brom, the elves etc from a very slanted POV that would open up many more questions about the world & story. Anyways, thanks for the vid Tiffany, def got me thinking which is what I love about fantasy series.

      It can definitely be difficult to make a good story following a character that you know later turns into a villain without it, feeling predictable, or at the very least depressing, because you know how they end up.
      Learning more about Murtaugh could be fun though, since we see him in person in the books.

      @TiffanyRussell  3 года назад

      Hi Arthur! So the elves do have gendered clothing, but their society doesn’t force them into gender roles. So Arya wanting to wear pants instead of a dress isn’t what makes her different.
      You’re right that Eragon becoming more elf like was a huge event, but both his and Arya’s story arcs encompass much more than just having an elf’s strength. They both have a lot of epicness in their lives.
      Thanks for watching!

    Arya is a magnificent and admirable character and is well deserving of her own story. There are however a few reasons why Eragon's story through the Inheritance cycle is more interesting and entertaining than Arya's.
    1. She is already incredibly powerful, She's an elf and is extremely accomplished in things like warfare, magic, and history. It takes Eragon the whole inheritance cycle to become her equal
    2. She's already been everywhere, seen everything and done most everything worth doing. Much of the joy we get from reading the books is witnessing Eragon experience all these things.
    3. As the princess and later queen of the elves, there are few who can match her status. While we see Eragon's status and renown increase gradually.
    If we were to get a book about a young and untested Arya I would be extremely interested.

    • @TiffanyRussell
      @TiffanyRussell  Месяц назад +1

      If a story were to follow Arya (which I would love) it would be a very different story from Eragon’s. It could either start with her already being experienced and competent, and so be about other types of conflict, or be a prequel of her origin story. Either way, I think it would be interesting, but I totally get why Eragon gets the spotlight.

    I know I made a comment here months ago but I thought I should make another comment about Arya:
    I wasn't a big fan of Arya when I first read the books but over the years she has grown on me but Saphira is still my favorite character in the IC. I do agree that there's need to be a story about her in her perspective but I'm uncertain about what should it be: A story of her in her early years or Post-Inheritance where she is queen, etc. And about the whole Eragon x Arya romance, idk where to stand on this, I was a fan when the books was new but nowadays I been less interested in the two getting together.

    • @TiffanyRussell
      @TiffanyRussell  Год назад

      Hi! Thanks for coming back!
      I think it’s easier to root for the romance when you read the book when you’re younger, and then when you go back and reread when you’re older, you can see that it doesn’t need to work out.
      I would be happy with either an Arya centered prequel, when she’s the rebellious princess, or later on when she has to deal with training with her dragon, and everything having to do with being queen. Either one would be good.

    • @BahamutZero09
      @BahamutZero09 Год назад

      @@TiffanyRussell I think it was the execution of the "romance" IMO, if there was even a romance to begin with. It just didn't feel like this epic romance that Angela foretold. I personaly think she shouldnt have become a Rider. It would have been way better if she just had become the queen, without becoming a rider. When i think of her, she just feels overpowered. Of course Eragon could by now easily defeat her (with the name of the names he could destroy all her wards, and then he could simply use one of the death words), but it just doesnt feel right for a rider to have an army of elves at her disposal.

    • @TiffanyRussell
      @TiffanyRussell  3 года назад

      Hi! I tend to agree that she should have been the queen OR a rider, but not both. I lean towards her being a rider as that’s what she dreamed of and it seems to fit her personality better. But yeah, overpowered for sure.

    Yes, I agree. She would have made a better main character for the series. The series has gotten a lot of flak from critics for ripping Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I think the critics would have had much less of a hill to stand on if she was the main character since the story being told from her perspective would have been much more original.
    Unfortunately, making her the main character would have meant much less time reading about Saphira whom is the shining star throughout the 4 books. Saphira added the whole majesty that the books feed off of since she is one of 3 dragons alive at the time in book 1. Love everything about her character.
    I suppose one way to have fixed that would have been to make Arya the main character but flip back and forth between her and Eragon/Saphira. Like Christopher did in book 2 with Roran's story.
    Starting earlier in the timeline would have been interesting. Having Arya be the main character would have opened up lots of elf lore. It also would have established her as the ambassador. Would have allowed the reader to develop an emotional connection to her, Faolin and Glenwing before the traumatic attack from Durza.
