I had been following mars on tumblr and instagram from the beginning of the art hoe aesthetic. It was so frustrating to see them get pushed out of the movement they created. I was a black, queer teen around the same age as mars and it watched in real time as it went from an uplifting movement to being reduced to a pinterest, starter pack aesthetic.
Erm This is My Generation's and Cultures and how we grew up Styles Plus Our Parents You mean W E had Our Babyhoods, Childhoods, Teenhoods, into Adulthoods Styles stolen and W E were erased
I mean. I literally cannot believe that we are being erased from ALL our Cultures, Our Cultures Styles, AND How WE Grew UP ! We also grew up multiracial So it ISN'T E V E N a M A T T E R of R a c e
We have Our Styles from Our Babyhoods, through Our Parent's Cultures, Our Childhoods, Our Teens, into Adulthood But Love How yall Erase Us Seems to be the Ish Now
love the sensitivity and care you put into this! i vaguely remember the original movement back in 2015/2016 but yeah it was sadly pushed out in favor of a watered down aesthetic. hopefully now more people will learn the origins of the movement and how important it was to young qpoc
And the Styles come from multiracial Cultures I almost want to cry that how i grew up as a baby, child, teen, into adulthood, our Clothing, Our Cultures, are being put in a completely different light and we erased from our actual upbringing HOW IS THIS P O S S I B L E !
SUPERB, educational vid on this complex...thing. Dion mentioned the Art Hoe look in passing in an earlier vid and I was really taken by the concept and loved the emphasis on color, especially yellow. It COULD be a niche fashion aesthetic, I thought at the time. But now after this deep dive, I, I will be candid, am squeamish about it as trampling on a Queer POC (an acronym I had to Google) "movement". Dion quotes that the founders took umbrage at "skinny white girls" with lots of money dressing as Art Hoes. Dion advises that you have to first feel art in you heart, brain and soul, if you're a skinny white girl, and THEN support Queer POC Art Hoes. So, I love the look but I don't know! And I read Dion, a skinny white girl, as ambivalent about it too, as aestheticizing, culturally appropriating, the dress of a marginalized community. If I were a skinny girl (I'm already white), I think I would pass on dressing Art Hoe Aesthetic, not wanting to look like something I'm not when those who are don't like me doing it. Fashion should be fun.
Could be Our Parent's Culture's Styles when we were babies, childhoods, teens, into adulthoods Is interesting how new '' names '' were stamped on Our Cultures Styles and How We Grew UP
Tysm for this video and for sharing more info and giving credit to the creator!!! I remember hearing that the aesthetic had been appropriated but I never heard the whole story. I think it’s such a beautiful and meaningful concept 🌼
To me as someone from southern Europe, where museums have been selling art accessories (Van Gogh socks, Monet tees...) for ages, It feels so weird to asociate something so basic and common to a concrete American movement. We do live in complete different universes and I feel that if I went to USA you would all be acussing me of cultural appropiation and I would be like "girl, what the heck, this Monet tee was bought bye my mom in the 90s" 😂😂
museums here definetly sell those things, sadly museums aren’t majorly accessible in a lot of areas in the US! outside of major cities the best we got is a history of airplanes museum or something
I totally agree in England and Europe I feel like we marinate in culture and history, and this is just art student look, I love it it feels weird some would sort of dupe it
It is Our parent's cultures styles when we were babies, also Cultures, it is Our Childhoods, Teens, and into Adulthoods Seems amazing we are erased everywhere From All Our Cultures Styles, that are ALL being sold as ''Fashion '' now I thought this was supposed to be a '' Woke '' '' aka Aware '' Era ? Feels reeeeeeeeeallly creepy
Ok, I've started over this comment three times (this is the fourth), I keep getting lost on my way to saying what I actually wanted to say: if you haven't seen the movie She's all that from 1999, do it! The main character is the epithomy of art hoe (until the "hero" mainstreams her to make her popular), and that is such a rare thing in movies/tv!
Well lgbtq should know it Because the origins are also part of that No one actually know where the Styles are from O U R C U L T U R E S which were only PART of lgbtq and P L E N T Y O F O T H E R S

Because the origins are also part of that
No one actually know where the Styles are from
