- We recently started experimenting with different ways to feed our chickens a clean, healthy, and organic diet that does not include traditional feed. In addition to their dry food mixture, we grow trays of wheat grass fodder to supplement them with fresh greens.
In this video you will see the very simple and inexpensive process we use to grow wheat grass fodder for our flock. This is especially beneficial to them in the winter months when the grass is dormant and they don't have access to fresh greens.
If you have chickens, try this and let us know what you think. Your flock will love you for it!

Thank y'all so much for this video. I have chickens and a goat and this is exactly what I need for them. Thank you so much.
Oh they are going to love it! Glad you found this video for them. If you havn’t seen yet, we linked the wheat grass berries in description.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I didn't know you could grow it in cold weather.
Thank you! It grows so well in the winter and your birds will LOVE having fresh greens during the winter months
That was great, I have to try thanks alot
Hope you enjoy!
We need a proper introduction to the farm animals and meet them.
That's a GREAT idea for a video! We will start working on that one. Thanks for watching
We did not add anything to the water, the wheatgrass berries germinate very quickly after the initial soaking. Water is from the faucet, no precise temperature requirement. Water them once per day until sprouted
Hi guys. 2 pans per 15 chickens. Is this an everyday supplement to their regular feed. Thanks for the vids.
Hi Doug,
It’s not an every day thing unless you have the ability to constantly make fresh pans. Since it takes about a week to fully sprout, that’s a good rotation. The birds love it and eat every bit. In the winter time it’s likely their only opportunity for fresh greens
Maybe I missed it, but do you have to water and rinse every day of the 14 days or just that initial soak?
You’ll just need to water it every 1-2 days to keep the roots from drying out but you only do the initial soak the first day to help the wheat berries have enough water to sprout
Does the feeding of wheatgrass improve that actual quality of eggs being produced? Are the egg yolks more yellow? Thank you for sharing!
Yes, the wheat grass is very nutrient dense and while it’s not the only reason for the dark yolks, all of our hens’ eggs have dark orange yolks
i can’t seem to find the link for it in the video description. Could you post the link in the comments?
I’ll fix that, but here is the link. It’s from “Palouse Brand”
Soft White Wheat Berries | Family Farmed in Washington State | 100% Desiccant Free | 5 lbs | Non-GMO Project Verified | 100% Non-Irradiated | Kosher | Field Traced | Burlap Bag a.co/d/8FSkTYp
How long does a bag of the seed last you?
I’m not positive but I believe we made 10 or 12 pans of fodder with the bag size linked in the comments
How many chickens do you have and how many do you feed a day?
We have 15 birds and this is a supplement to their other food. We give them 1 pan at a time to make sure they eat it all
How much do you water them after day 1
About 1 liter per day per pan
hilarious donkey🤣, did you guys measure the yield of fodder relative to the seed. weight ?
She’s so funny and has quite the personality. We didn’t think to weigh the yield but we will do that on our next set of trays. The 5lb bag of wheatgrass berries made A LOT of fodder
Just came across y’all’s channel! Thank you for sharing your fodder making system. I love how so many people are sharing and we are all able to learn so much from each other!
We have posted some videos on our channel if y’all would like to check it out. Excited for future videos, have a blessed week!
Hey there! So glad you found the channel. You're so right, it is more fun to make videos around the farm when you know the tips & tricks will help others, and vice versa. This will be our first year taking the gardening seriously so the video you have about sprouting seeds will be a big help for us!
@@texastotable Oh wow I didn’t know that! Thank you for sharing and there will be more about the other seeds we have, a garden tour and where we plan to place each crop this year. I’m so excited and glad y’all are starting this year. For me and I know some others that working and being in the garden is therapeutic! It’s wonderful and amazing to see what you planted grow.
Where do you get your seeds
These were ordered from a family farm through Amazon, the link should be in the video descriptions. They offer various sizes and we have been extremely happy with the quality
