What I love about this sequence is that it starts out mundane, dirty, a bunch of guys carrying their stuff, even a rooster in the background. And then out of nowhere comes this fleeting moment of grandeur that culminates in two very different people ecstatically saying the same things to each other in Russian and German. It gives me goosebumps.

It's not so silly. The lyrics - though they are a sweet, nostalgic song about the simple things a Russian soldier must do without, reflecting his gentle humor ... say more about the resilience of the Russian soul; implicitly longing for those very things he must do without, while "soldiering on."

Senny is a small space between the front door and door leading to the living quarters in the old russian houses. Basically was designed to keep the cold and dirt out of the living quarters, like a modern wardrobe room.

I think the soldier looking up at the sky is supposed to represent the good mood of the scene. The Russian army is clearly eager to get into the fight and the patriotic singing and high morale of the officers and men clearly shows that. Maybe the soldier never realized the simple beauty of the sky until that point, or never appreciated it's simplicity. He could be reflecting his fate, who knows. But I think overall it was meant to convey a message of happiness and maybe innocense.

@@Lucas-q2l5e Lol, it's true that it wasn't as brutal as it is today, but it was actually more brutal than before, especially the Napoleonic war was so large-scale that it broke many previous records. You've seen a lot of Hollywood, it's not as peaceful and disciplined as you think, imagine a medieval war but on a much larger scale and more brutal, it's exactly like that. Especially the Napoleonic Wars, you cannot compare it with the wars before the 19th century. In just one day, the French and Allied troops lost up to 50,000 soldiers. The reason it doesn't look brutal is because at that time artillery shells didn't explode, they were designed to bounce on the ground, so they could go through many rows of soldiers. That's why looking from the paintings it may not look brutal, it's also due to the drawing style of that time. And the reason why soldiers at that time volunteered to join was because they were brainwashed, in a time when there was no television and radio, it was easy for the government to brainwash people, they portrayed the war as a beautiful picture.

@@staliniosifvissarionovich5588 I don't know if that "brainwash" thing you said is true, i only know that lots of soldier fighted for Honor and Glory, fame and money too.
In the case of the "brutality", yeah... I only know that in some cases you could see soldiers without heads (due to canons, Sabres or lances), dismembered, or just bleeding.
The medicians of the era were also not so good, they would just put bandages, gazes or realize amputations.

@@Lucas-q2l5e Yes, there were also very brave people, but at that time there was no information about how cruel the war was, only when we witnessed it did we know. There were also quite a few mercenaries at that time.
And in addition to losing a head, it is not uncommon to find a body with a large hole in the body.
Medical care at that time was terrible, if you got hit in the leg or arm, they could only give you a rag to suck on while they sawed off your arm and leg.

The Russians are fighting abroad of their good prices, only when their worldview does not contradict the attitudes of their leaders. Examples: the Campaigns of Marshal Suvorov, of the Expedition of Admiral Ushakov, the War in East Turkestan 1940-ies. There are many examples. And always in these companies, the Russian soldiers believed their leaders.

Без умелого руководства даже самые воодушевлённые солдаты обречены. Такое явление как пропаганда ещё только зарождалось, был пущен слух что наполеон это сам антихрист. Так что нельзя сказать русским солдатам было совсем уж не за что сражаться.
