This is actually similar to how Bejeweled 2's music works. It uses a .mo3 file that is just a collection of MP3/Vorbis audio samples that get layered and manipulated. It allowed the game to provide 40 minutes of music from a 428KB file. If they just used normal audio files, at 256kb/s, 40 minutes of music would take up 76 MB. This was a huge improvement for a downloadable game in 2004.
BeyondTheNetwork.it was the file I found in the Bejeweled 2 files. It was composed by Skaven, who is well-known from the demo scene of the 1990s. I have a bunch of .mod and .s3m files from them. Perhaps later revisions of the game switched to the more space-efficient .mo3 format. The Impulse Tracker format version is 4.03 MB.
There’s a subtle bonus effect to the PS1 startup sound that I like to believe was intentional (but can’t confirm, lol) - the multi frequency sweep makes cheap televisions sound better than they actually are and great televisions sound *amazing*, and what better to show that your console was the future than “magically” making your TV - any TV - sound hi-fi?
Agreed, it was almost like a digital audio optimization ... Sony did make use of memory very efficiently. Case in point, look how Crash Bandicoot turned out with it's graphics and 3-D playing field. It hacked available memory on both the PSOne motherboard as well as the CD ... stretched software and hardware to it's limits at the time

The PS1 startup is so iconic to me, and I never had any idea that it was just three tiny samples cleverly manipulated in real-time. Amazing what the engineers did with limited resources in those days.
Wow, this really surprised me, I thought it was recorded as-is, it certainly makes sense though. It must have taken a lot of trial-error, to get the right speed and pitch to make it sound like it does now!
Omfg, i just had a shiver down my spine when i reheard the introduction to the startup sound again. It has been a long time since i've felt something like thi and it felt good.

The sounds are played at different speeds to produce what we hear or, more precisely, the sounds are used as instruments by the PlayStation console. The PlayStation is capable of sample-based sound synthesis with digital signal processing to add effects like reverb and echo.
It was around 2008 - 2010 when I played the ps1 for the first time since I was born in 2004, but that was the only thing I played, so it's still really nostalgic even for me.

I need to get this out by pulling out and blowing the dust off my PS1; Thank you😪 ✨❤️
Nostalgia can have a very profound emotional impact.
It was like something iconic from the 90's every japanesse technology hardware has this unique and "high-tech-y" sounds
Simple times, one of the best for sure thanks for this
Wth you actually have quality.
You need a shout out by someone bigger to get audience
You could try reddit or a forum.
Just don't go to 4chan.
They're merciless :v
Love this old-school startup sound! Very nostalgic after I was born in '87! PS1 was my third console after moving on from the SNES and NES.
Such attention to detail and snooping into the code of a gaming history gem is as cool as it gets.
The Impulse Tracker format version is 4.03 MB.
hearing this makes me cry i miss the good old days
I love that PS1 start up sound so much. It's the sound of my childhood.
the distorted bell sound at 2:46 and was used for Fearful Harmony was crazy!
everyone who have played PS1 in the 90s was a great nostalgia
There’s a subtle bonus effect to the PS1 startup sound that I like to believe was intentional (but can’t confirm, lol) - the multi frequency sweep makes cheap televisions sound better than they actually are and great televisions sound *amazing*, and what better to show that your console was the future than “magically” making your TV - any TV - sound hi-fi?
That makes sense! Those cheap speakers in a lot of the old CRT televisions had very uneven frequency response.
Agreed, it was almost like a digital audio optimization ... Sony did make use of memory very efficiently. Case in point, look how Crash Bandicoot turned out with it's graphics and 3-D playing field. It hacked available memory on both the PSOne motherboard as well as the CD ... stretched software and hardware to it's limits at the time
This was super insightful as an audio person who watched others play the PS1 in the 90s. Thank you for sharing this!
This start up by far is the vitamin C of sound. These bios sounds deserve to be preserved in the national recording registry of the library of Congress, even though it’s not just one recording. It’s iconic. It’s invigorating. It’s timeless. I want to compose an entire ambient soundtrack out of these sounds
Does anybody get chills every time they hear the playstation sound, i do rip
I'm so gratefull to life that someone has done this. I was wondering about how this was made for so long! Thank you!
Yep. I miss that sound. It definitely brings back memories, Thank You.
This was the best sound we hear back in the days as kids. I was born in 91
Now I have to find a video with the intro slowed down like that, that was amazing
Impressive. I feel like I've witnessed a secret I "shouldn't have," like seeing the inside of a dishwasher as it works. 😂
If looking inside a dishwasher mid-operation makes you feel like stuck-on grease, then I suggest you avoid the Technology Connections YT channel.
Still here this every time I boot up my PS4 Pro. 😊 Thanks Sony for the 20th Anniversary theme. Brings me back to when I was 12.
Omfg, i just had a shiver down my spine when i reheard the introduction to the startup sound again. It has been a long time since i've felt something like thi and it felt good.
The fearful harmony was made from the sound samples in the startup like the tingling but slowed down
Man, i miss the ps1! Those were the good old days, i have recently started playing Clocktower ( which has a purple back side ) i've been able to play this on ps3. Great episode here, have a great New Years!
The sounds are played at different speeds to produce what we hear or, more precisely, the sounds are used as instruments by the PlayStation console.
The PlayStation is capable of sample-based sound synthesis with digital signal processing to add effects like reverb and echo.
I love my ps1 theme on my ps4, it makes the start up Sound from the ps1 when you turn it on
I remember hooking the audio to my boombox and it was like THX quality at home.
the sweeping sound is from the D-50 Roland synthesizer
MarkB the sweeping? You mean the sawtooth synth
@@jaytekk9 The keyboard call it a sweep
MarkB so which sweeping sound do you mean
@@jaytekk9 Its a patch/instrument on the keyboard. It's named "something" sweep, i forgot the actual name.
MarkB ok
Best boot up sound of any counsel, and very interesting on how it was created, i would've never thought that.
when this sounds hits a real man, tears run in your face
It was around 2008 - 2010 when I played the ps1 for the first time since I was born in 2004, but that was the only thing I played, so it's still really nostalgic even for me.
Next: The atrocity that made the PS2 boot up sound and the theory behind the famous crashes before even getting into the main menu.
Amazing. The boot composition will always stay epic for an entire generation. Would be fun if Sony understood why people love it so much. It isn’t just about nostalgia.
First console I owned. Best intro by far. I occasionally find clips of it on RUclips and blast it on my friend's home theater set up. That and the THX sound too.
Excellent video! Reminds me of the process that sound engineers used in Jurassic Park. They combined/altered sounds of modern animals to create the haunting roars and screams of the dinosaurs. Even today, the dinosaurs seem real.
I remember how excited I got as it got to the "PlayStation" part of the intro. "Get in my disc is working!!"
Wow, I never would have suspected that type of sound sampling from Sony. I guessed 2 sound samples at most running at the speed we hear. Not playing itself at various speeds. Great video!
Born 93'. This sound will forever be engrained in my soul.
That is amazing that only three sounds were used but were mixed in and edited up to give us the sound we're familiar with.-
The most remarkable thing is the sound engineer who implemented all of this in the first place. WHO???
I wasn't a PlayStation kid but that sound is so satisfying.
same im an xbox kid it sounds weird haha "xbox kid" i know its an oxymoron but what were referring to is a name as per the kid who we once were when we played the console we liked I played with a PlayStation 3 not even 1 2 or 4 5 just 3 and it was my dads so I played cars 1 and 2 there but xboxs console is my favorite so there thus I am an XBOX KID!!!
I was 8 y.o. in 94 !
Nostalgia...
This is the best start up ever hands down. Syphon filter 3 was one of my favorite games
When I hear
"BSSSSSMMMMMNNNN...BSSSMNNNNNNN....pling...pling...pling.........pling"
I hit like
I remember being 12 and buying Final Fantasy 7 along with my PS1, I remember the loading screen from this video made me super excited everytime because I couldn't wait to play! Great memories
When you hear that start up, you know you’re getting quality!
I was born in 2001 and this was my first console, now 20 years later I'm still watching videos about it. Mesmerizing.
Does anyone know a better intro than the ps1's? I mean it feels so good to hear that the tone progression
They aren't better, but the PS2 and the GameCube startups get close.
Okay, imagine this:
you're 9 years old, school's just started but you still haven't lost your summer mood. it's 2am and your parents are sleeping. you bring out the PSX, connect the red, yellow, and white cables to your CRT TV, put your Driver 1 disk in, spin it, and then close the lid and press the power button.
as we see here 3:16
PS1 had the first instances of SCPs known to mankind. SCP-1001-1 -2 and -3
That is the names of PS1 and PS2 models. It says SCPH
That bootup for PlayStation 1 makes me cry
RIP to Tohru Okada, the man who wrote this.
R.I.P 😭
I just discovered you but as soon as you opened the CD tray, I love you now. That's one of my all-time favorite games.
Pretty cool! Never put two and two together before on this
All I learn from this video summarised in 3 words: Quality over Quantity.
ZOL in a 3D environment is the scariest thing I have ever seen. I get the whole fearing it thing now. Also it seems my prediction about the raw files being in the description came true.
@@Nitrocosm moving to Vimeo *does* seem like a good idea now, you could reupuload there
Sorry for asking, but what do you mean by "ZOL"?
@@mk-yg7op I'm referring to a video on his channel called CAVE. It's part of a hodgepodge of old ARGs that he put together. You should check it out, it's pretty cool
Brings back ancient memories.
This used to scare the shit out of me and one time I cried and everytime I woke up and went to my living room my dad would turn the volume alll the way up and start it up
Yep
Lmao that's a father alright
