Everyone credits Chris with the success of Home Free. He may have started the group, but after watching the documentary he did on the 20th anniversary of Home Free, it was obvious to me that ADAM is the one that kept it going. He was the one making all the calls to get them gigs while Chris was in Texas doing something else. Adam is the backbone of Home Free in more ways than one.
I've always said the same thing. Chris said that Adam refused to give up even when Chris himself was feeling discouraged and wondering if they were wasting their time. Tim once said in a interview that Adam was the magic of Home Free. And is it me or in videos, BTS and interviews do they all seem to tease Adam and be very protective of him like he's the little brother of the group even though he's second oldest.
Ninja, you were right, that's Shawn from B2M... The other male judge is Ben Folds. They had trouble making it onto the Sing-Off until they actually agreed to label themselves as Country a capella. Thank heavens they did! I fell in love with them with this performance and have followed them every since!!
Home Free always had a variety of music genres they covered so they never considered themselves country, but the show wanted them to be "the country group", so that's why it's emphasized on the show. If you want to see Chris in the lead may I suggest "A Little Bit Of Everything". Not sure if there's an official video, but you can find plenty of fan videos on RUclips.
Home Free was not Country until the Sing-Off. Tim was literally running away from Country, but the Sing-Off folks told them that HF would almost be guaranteed a spot on the show if they would do Country. I think there were a lot of conversations about it because, once they appeared on the show as Country, they would be labeled and it would be hard to get away from that Country label. Adam does get mentioned several times in later performances. Chris was totally ignored by the judges on the Sing-Off. If you’d like to learn more about how all of it happened, Chris Rupp did a ‘documentary’ on the history of HF, and Elizabeth of the Charismatic Voice does an in depth interview with Tim. (Something to entertain you on the flight home?) Chris is doing solo work now and is also involved with some sort of dancing stuff.
The show wanted to bring in the country aspect because it was unique and most of the songs they demo'd for the show happened to be country. Chris and Austin were all for doing country, Tim was actively avoiding country (but fate kept dragging him back over and over) and Adam and Rob were kind of in the middle but after they looked at a lot of they used to do in their sets they realized a lot of what they were doing was country. They finally convinced Tim to say out loud that they were a country band.
Austin actually joined the group a few months before this contest! The guys met him on a cruise where he was part of the entertainment, and the rest of history! I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! Continued blessings! ❤❤❤
Love seeing these Sing Off shows as I never saw any of them live. What stands out to me is not only how young the guys look but the humility & support they give each other. No divas in this group. And Adam Rupp's talent already was head & shoulders above a lot of the other beatboxers at that time. Hard to believe he is even better now. It is also fun listening to the judges comments. They loved these guys from the start. Home Free is redoing all these songs from the "Sing Off" for their 10 year anniversary album, so you will be able to compare them now.
The Sing Off show was only for a cappella groups, and apparently ran out of potential contestants and ratings, and was cancelled after another season of two. I loved the show and watched every minute of Home Free's amazing episodes. There was never a question in my mind that they would win after they stormed onto the stage with "Cruise"! It was the producers that insisted on branding them as "country", and it worked well. But HF never intended to limit themselves after this. Did you notice how tall they all are? They made Lichay look short! Always enjoy you two -- keep it up!
I'm glad you are watching these because it is great to see when they got their big break and how it happened. However, you should bear in mind that to some extent the Sing-Off is a lie. Home Free came to the audition prepared with songs of multiple genres but the first one they sang happened to be country. After that, they were going to sing another genre but the producers said no, what else can you do country? So they came up with another country song on the fly. They were then told they had a good chance of being selected for the show but only if they were willing to market themselves as a country acappella group. The show saw it as a way of having something different in a show format that can be somewhat repetitive. Some of Home Free was against the country label because they knew if they appeared on TV as a country group then win or lose they might never shake the label and would end up pigeonholed forever. They decided to take a vote and the result was 3 to 2 in favor. I can't remember 100% who voted for what, but I think it was the Rupp brothers and Austin were for and Rob and Tim were against. (I'm confident it was Austin and Chris for and Tim against, but I'm less sure about Adam and Rob's vote.) At the time Tim already felt pressured to do country because of another business arrangement that he was in and felt sick of it which was why he was against it. Austin had only recently joined and was just excited to be part of everything and Chris was willing to do anything to promote this group that he'd already given so much of his life for. So after the vote, they said yes to the label and were accepted onto the show. Then the producers stepped in and countrified their look even more, telling them to all grow out their hair and beards before the filming and dressing them in a more grungy style. My guess is that Austin couldn't grow a decent beard at the time or maybe they just wanted him to stand out as the cute young one but he got to be cleanshaven on the show. Rob had a beard before but it was short and manicured, but apparently, he was the most successful growing facial hair at the time. The producers made a point of really marketing Rob as the funny beard guy instead of noticing his amazing voice. They mention Austin's "star potential", Tim's amazing bass sound, and Adam's phenomenal beatboxing. Sadly they never commented on Chris once.
They said that they were a "Country" group because the show wanted them to. They were told that they had a better chance of being on the show if they presented as "Country" If you liked this performance.... They are currently releasing updated videos of all of their Sing off performances, "Cruise" just dropped a few days ago. It would be great to see you guys reacting to the old and new versions.
Austin was 27 years old at the time of the show. The man you didn't know was Ben Folds who is a singer-songwriter. And yes that was Shawn Stockman from Boys ll Men. After I saw this that night I told my husband if they don't win I will never watch the show again. I really enjoyed watching your reactions to this first song of The Sing Off. I forgot to say if you didn't know the group was formed back in 2000 by Chris and Adam Rupp and a friend Matt Atwood.
My daughter and I were watching and I said the same to her. We'd started watching the previous year, and on the first episode when PTX sang, I said the same. It was obvious to us that PTX was the stand-out of their season and Home Free was the stand-out in theirs.
Yay for Home Free Friday!!! I love going back to the Sing Off clips. It was the first time for some national exposure for them, and they surely deserved it. Chris doesn’t get as many leads in the Home Free songs, but if it weren’t for Chris, there would be no Home Free, so mad respect to him. He gets a verse in Wagon Wheel/Song of the South. After you’re done with this series, I recommend watching Tim’s tribute to Chris that he gave at the last show that Chris was in.
If you check out other episodes you'll hear plenty of praise for Adam. Austin was blessed/cursed with looking 10 years younger than his actual age (didn't seem to bother his many femaale fans) and it's only recently that he looks the full 38that he is. Of course with that beard he could be 92 as far as anyone can tell.
Hey u2, Thanks for the reaction, The competition had several restrictions, and they wanted to show case Austin and Tim, so they just released the 10 year, album all updated versions of all the sing off, the way they wanted to do them not the way the show wanted them to do. Also, Happy belated anniversary. Cya on the next one, Luv ya.❤
Every group was told they had to choose 2 members to be highlighted. This was because most of the other groups were large and in all there must have been over hundred participants. In any reality show there are only a limited number of individuals for the home audience to focus on. The producers clearly saw Austin as a breakout star and featured him heavily in the production numbers at the beginning of each show (I hope you're not going to tell me that they were wrong!). Apart from anything else, he was the only one in the group with extensive experience of production numbers. As the only true basso profundo on the show, Tim was a natural choice to be featured. The band were privileged in being able to give a 3rd member, Rob, a lead. I don't think there was much feeling that they couldn't do the songs the way they wanted. It certainly is not the impression given in the History of Home Free, where the main complaint was that they were worked too hard.
Glad yall enjoyed it, I hope you check out more from the sing off. The judges give Adam some praise on a couple of the other songs and there is more explained about Home Free's 'country' label in one of the other sing off videos.
Baritones don't get a lot of love in groups like this. There are a few songs where Chris took the lead, but for the most part they don't have official videos for them - only fan videos or audio only. The exception is Movin' On, which is a Chris original. Little Bit of Everything fan video and White Christmas off the Full of Cheer album audio only are two that come to mind.
Y'all could potentially see a Chris Rupp song with Home Free from after he left if it's requested by someone for the Christmas choices.....then it's 6 of them singing (both Chris and Chance)
Such a good rendition. Loved Tim’s low notes. The first judge was Ben Folds and he’s a well known producer I believe. Then Jewel and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men. Really good version. 🥰😄
So glad you're doing these. I would love to see your reaction to the recent re-recording of these songs on their new album. Hopefully, someone who can afford it will request the double reactions for the others.
I’m really glad you’re doing the Sing Off. But remember that Home Free started in 2000. If you really want to see or hear how far they’ve come check out some stuff from before the Sing Off. They started doing all kinds of music with a couple of Country songs. They only switched to be an official Country group when they got on the show. Chris has a series on his channel (Chris Rupp) that has everybody telling the story of how HF got started and how they got to where they are (at least the first 20 years). It's a bit hard to react to but it's a good watch to listen to while working on other stuff. I think there are 7 videos total.
Thank you! If there is a lot of requests we'll definitely create a reaction video, otherwise (as you mentioned), we'll watch on our own time. Appreciate the advice, thanks again!
They were good already back then. They have only gotten better! One of the judges was Shawn Stockman from BoyZ II Men. He was the one that said they should do End of The Road. Love these guys so very much. Love your reactions! ♥
The Sing-Off only ran 5 seasons and PTX won season 3 and Home Free won in season 4. The show was all acapella groups competing against one another. I wish they would bring it back because it really boosted some of the groups' careers and got people to know about acapella music. Home Free was not Country before The Sing-Off. Reality shows create their own reality and the show producers decided they should be labelled Country as they had never had a country group on before. The guys agreed in order to get on the show.
Hey Scott!! We should have put the link on the screen in addition to the video description, sorry about that. Here's the link if you still need it...and we love you too!! ❤️,🥷🏻 bit.ly/musikdiscount
They were not always a country group from the start. When they tried out for the Sing-Off, they had to sing 3 songs and one of them was a country song the producer said They'd never had a country act on the show so if they could sell themselves as a country act they could be on the show. They voted on it, and Tim was against it, even though I think he has the most pronounced country voice. Anyways, they said yes and were on the sing-off, won the Sing-Off and the rest is history.
Gee your wife is just beautiful. ❤ She is very smart and your love for each other is very obvious to me.I love you two .Homefree are ridiculously talented. #Homefree
OH MY GOSH!! Wifey here, THANK YOU for the sweet compliments. You just made my weekend. Please come back every day and comment!! Teehehee...in all seriousness, THANK YOU again, and we completely agree about Home Free. ❤️,🥷🏻
Calling themselves a "country" band is what got them on the sing-off. The producers of the sing-off pushed that to show variety in the acts. They also were pushing Austin and Tim as the "front" men for the group limiting what Chris and Rob could do. Rob does get a time to shine in one of the last songs they do, Colder Weather. TV is a producer driven medium. The guys have shown a huge range in their musical castes and talent as you have noted about their "growth". The have grown ad have a more mature sound now, in part because of the maturing of their voice that come with age.
Oh no!!! That was all the video showed before commercial...I'm going to go double check what link we used. We try so hard not to cut off the comments at the end!!! Thanks for letting me know. ❤️,🥷🏻
The judges tried to make this all about Austin and Tim. The other's were kind of ignored. But the guy's didn't "follow " the judges "request " on several songs.
@musikbyjh they almost lost when the judges wanted either Austin or Tim to take lead when they did Colder Weather. They all "try out " for the lead of a song. Rob won the vote amongst the guys, and the judges were a little negative/upset about their decision.

Pentatonix was on the sing off on season 3. Its awesome to watch and see how young they were when they started
🖤🍟
Beautiful job, you guys. Thank you for the joy and care you bring to these reactions. ❤
Love you both, but how am I going to scan that QR code while I'm watching you on my phone 😅
Do you hear what i hear Home free's take of it.
They were told to be a country group.
And they wanted Austin to do lead.
Austin looks young enough to be carded.
100%
Shucks! You stopped the video too soon! The judges, after HF left the stage, were chatting about how really good HF was!
I'm glad they didn't follow the judges request...that's BS!
@musikbyjh they almost lost when the judges wanted either Austin or Tim to take lead when they did Colder Weather. They all "try out " for the lead of a song. Rob won the vote amongst the guys, and the judges were a little negative/upset about their decision.
